I think this is a really good point:
2/26/2009 8:54:58 AM
^Agreed. I think that's the main idea. Not to mention that they are going to post every position, even if they know who is going to be hired. With that said, coaches in the WBB community know who's job this is. Everyone in that group clearly knows how much Yow was loved in the WBB community. So if someone comes in and was able to somehow beat out Glance in the process, this coach would be frowned upon IMMENSELY. I'm not saying you have to be friends with everyone to be a great coach. But any qualified, well-known, proven coach knows better than to make this jump.
2/26/2009 1:29:55 PM
For god sakes, just hire Glance. It'll make her happy, the players happy, and respect a dead women's wishes. No one gives a shit about women's basketball anyway. It's boring as fuck and makes a negligible amount of money for the university (probably loses money). Who cares if we're actually good.
2/26/2009 1:41:29 PM
^and that's lee fowler's perspective on ncsu athletics in a nutshell. and that's why i have no problem with looking for the best coach we can find nationally. unfortunately, fowler screwed up the message here by announcing to the world that he's not honoring his recently deceased hall-of-famer coach's wishes. why in god's name would you do that?
2/26/2009 2:38:32 PM
^Did you read the WRAL article? It actually makes a lot of sense he's doing it this way. By posting the job, but announcing that Glance is the chosen "successor" then no one is going to apply for it. He's legitimately handing her the position, but doing it the right way.
2/26/2009 2:44:16 PM
"the right way" would be to shut his mouth. do a coaching search and determine if glance is in fact that best person for the job. if she is, then announce that it was yow's wish. if not, then don't mention it. and no i didn't read the wral article.
2/26/2009 2:46:26 PM
I understand what you're saying, but I also put a lot of trust into Yow's decision. She probably knew womens basketball better than anyone else out there, and if she thought Glance was the best person for the job, she's probably right. There are a few incredible womens coaches out there, but you'll never get them to leave their institutions. And the last thing Fowler needs is to instigate another round of raises for those coaches, like our last hiring fiasco.

Im curious to know what other coaches are putting their names in for Yow's vacant seat, b/c even if I was a good coach from a mid-major school, wanting a shot at a big name school/conference, coming in when the school, avid fans, former coach wanted someone else would be an enormous amount of pressure to deal with-beyond the normal pressure of collegiate coaching.
2/26/2009 3:37:05 PM
2/26/2009 4:15:51 PM
The story about Yow wanting Glance to get the job was already common knowledge. Fowler didn't do himself any favors by bringing it up, but it isn't like he's the original source of the story.

Here's an interesting perspective: http://www.wralsportsfan.com/voices/blogpost/4673408/
3/5/2009 11:56:53 AM
That's written without much context of ACC women's basketball or our team in particular.
3/5/2009 12:14:45 PM
I agree. But at the same time, brings up some good points. Sure, UNC, Duke, and Maryland are powerhouses of women's basketball. But why can't we be? We've had arguably the best coach, and we're still not performing as well as we could. But then again, you can ask that for all of our sports. Why can't we expect to beat the powerhouses? I do agree with the premise though, Fowler's got a tough call to make, but I hope Glance can build the program, and satisfy Yow's wishes.
3/5/2009 12:25:10 PM
While he makes a decent argument, I can tell you Dane has never been around that team. During the past 5 years or so, I don't think he has ever been to a game. Maybe after Yow's death he's attended a few, but I seriously question his credibility on knowing what's right for the program when he hasn't watched this team AT ALL throughout the past few years.
3/5/2009 12:48:01 PM
That's what I was saying. He writes like someone told him to write a kinda controversial article and he spent an hour looking at box scores first.
3/5/2009 12:50:29 PM
why the fuck was Fowler wearing a blue jack at a State/UNC game?get the fuck out.
3/5/2009 2:21:47 PM
I was thinking along the lines of a navy blazer.

Ok, so im watching our ladies playing against Wf in the ACC Womens BBALL tournament...and ummm....lets just say we're not playing well at all. Hopefully they can turn it around in the second half. Go Pack! .......
3/5/2009 3:46:53 PM
lost 59-54 today in the first round of the ACC tournamentnow we can watch Fowler botch the search

can we start the petition to fire him now?

not being Thursday afternoon is the straw that breaks the camel's back. That's a very important part of the week (hey, we give wolfpackhoops shit for not proofreading)
4/9/2009 6:56:29 PM
I just heard the news that Fowler is not promoting Stephanie Glance, I for one will be leading a Firestorm to the news media and the rest of our student body..Fowler's ass has got to GO!!
4/10/2009 12:16:54 AM
I think we need to show our support of Coach Glance at the "Kay Yow Spring football game"..anybody have any idea how we should do this??? Since the game is made in Yow's honor and one of her wishes was to have Coach Yow succeed her...???
4/10/2009 2:31:55 AM
Kellie Jolly is getting that shit... slowly turning that red into orange... one post (so witty) at a time
4/10/2009 2:38:03 AM
Well she's married now and named Kellie Harper. Her coach is actually on WCU's staff. I wonder if that is weird having your wife as your boss also. She went to Tennessee and while there she played point guard. She led the Vols to three straight national championships. So you know she's got a good pedigree. She's also not too bad on the eyes. At little old WCU she made the NCAA tournament 2 times in 5 years (2005, 2009). She won the Southern Conference tournament in 2005 and 2009, as well as finishing first in the conference in the regular season in 2007. She has also been in the Southern Conference Championship game 4 times. She was the 2007 SoCon COY. She has an overall record of 97-65.

I know it would be nice to let glance be the coach, but what recruits are going to want to play for her???We need a coach with strong recruitment, who is from a big state to hopefully build our program up.
4/10/2009 9:16:38 AM
My only hope is that this leads to his being released/fired/whatever. I honestly cant imagine how he can be retained after this fiasco. First of all, it wasnt public knowledge that Kay wanted Glance to be the successor until he opened his big mouth (I mean, I think we all knew that was probably the case, but we didnt know it for a fact). Why on Earth would he even mention that, unless he planned to give her the job? He is a walking PR nightmare...which is magnified when your media relations people suck ass too.Thing is, the hiring was going to have a divided fanbase regardless...but if Glance was hired, then you have a segment thats disappointed we didnt get a bigger name. However, hiring anyone from the outside will result in having the other segment pissed the fuck off, and that segment includes most of your former players and big supporters, some that will very likely stop coming to games/giving money/etc. It doesnt matter if he manages to sign a big name coach, it doesnt matter if they win a championship in year one...the way he has handled this, it goes down as a fail for Fowler regardless.[Edited on April 10, 2009 at 9:21 AM. 4/10/2009 9:20:14 AM
I just don't understand why you would announce that you are not hiring one person, without having someone who you are hiring to announce with itIt's like saying we don't know who we can get, but it's not gonna be that one who's been in the program for years, no sirit just reeks of bad politics, Glance probably got in an argument with Fowler or some shit and he's just trying to get a dig in

Fowler really fucked this one up. He has let this "search" drag on for months and now that letter that Kay Yow wrote to Oblinger/Fowler has been made public. Yet another fucked up coaching search by Lee.He is such an embarrassment to this University. I mean really, could he have fucked this up any more?[Edited on April 10, 2009 at 10:35 AM. Reason : []

It's kind of sad to think about it really. I mean we could have Bobby Purcell or Charlie Cobb who are definitely qualified for the AD job.
4/10/2009 10:38:23 AM
It's a shit storm by all accounts. Go to WRAL sports section and it's the top sports story. Lee Fowler is fucking up the WBB coaching search and it's locally THE TOP SPORTS STORY days after UNC wins the National Championship! Did we really expect anything different?[Edited on April 10, 2009 at 10:42 AM. Reason : []

^^^ at the red/white football game? i'm not a PR expert or anything but it seems like announcing a head coach not named stephanie glance at the kay yow spring game has bad idea written all over it.i don't know anything about women's basketball so i'm going to see how this plays out in a half-interested way. to me though, it seems like fowler is going to come under fire regardless of the decision he makes. (hire glace vs. not) i'm sure he realizes this and feels that there are significantly stronger candidates out there than glance. that being said i do think this is one of those situations where he could make an emotional hire and not take too much heat if it didn't work out.just my $.02[Edited on April 10, 2009 at 10:43 AM. State fans would give the new coach a chance. They aren't going to boo her/him. Now they might boo Fowler, but they usually welcome coaches with open arms and give them a chance. I think Harper would be a fine hire actually.
