per wral:
apparently radio stations could have been fined $325,000 each for the use of an explicative like that, but luckily it was just after 10pm. There are relaxed rules between 10pm and 6am

(summary of what they just said on the news)

Quote :
"Chapel Hill, N.C. — Several radio stations were wondering if federal authorities will make them pay the price after University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill men's basketball coach Roy Williams uttered an expletive during a live press conference Wednesday night.

After a highly emotional game against rival North Carolina State University, a reporter asked Williams if he knew why his "veteran guys ... stink" at playing full-court press.

Williams responded, "If I knew the answer to that, do you think we'd still be (expletive) stinking?"

He immediately apologized for his verbal lapse, saying, "Everybody strike that f-word; I meant to say 'frickin.'"

The expletive, though, went out unedited on several media outlets, including radio stations carrying the Wolfpack Sports Network and Tar Heel Sports Network.

Federal law permits the Federal Communications Commission to fine stations up to $325,000 for each occurrence of obscene material broadcast on their airwaves.

The time at which Williams said the word is key to whether stations would be liable for a fine, said Mark Prak, an attorney for the North Carolina Association of Broadcasters. The FCC allows a "safe harbor" for broadcasting indecent material from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., when fewer families and children are listening or watching.

According to reporters at the press conference, Williams said the expletive a few minutes after 10 p.m.

"Given the time of day of Coach Williams' remarks, it would appear that all the radio stations carrying the post-game news conference live caught a break," Prak said.

The context in which the word was uttered could also make levying fines harder, the attorney said.

"I wouldn't argue that this is necessarily a broadcast of indecent material," he said. "As a matter of fact, if it occurred during a press conference of a newsworthy event, it might very well be exempt."

The FCC would have to launch an investigation first before levying any fines, Prak said.

"While we can all appreciate when someone makes a mistake, I'm not sure every case is a federal case," he said."

How many times do we see a coach explode during a press conference and just go off curse the entire time? It isn't like this is the first time a coach has cursed in the postgame. This was done in a relaxed setting and had everyone in the media room laughing about it for the rest of the night.

Yeah, I got nothing against the guy on a personal level.

I'd like to see an example of him being a pompous dick.

Fuck 1950s-esque puritan regulations... anyone should be able to say any word at any time on any medium unless they advertise themselves as a kid's program.

Bitches need to get up off Roy's ass.

same here.

I've never been able to muster up as much hatred for ol' roy as i had for deano.

on the same token, Matt Doherty is still my favorite all-time UNC head coach.

What makes you think it's an act?

Is it because he said fuck in a press conference? Do you hang out with him a lot, tschudi? What's he really like?

^He's made a big deal about the fact that he doesn't curse very often. He keeps it clean or whatever.

So the fact that he manages to get caught cursing like this makes him a liar.

And, yes, it's an act. You don't compete at the level he does with a "golly gee" attitude. He is probably more calculated and meticulous than your average person times a hundred.

In terms of him being likable or unlikeable...I dunno. Dean Smith was tremendous advocate for his players, and I also love his politics. He had balls. He came out and said shit that was really unpopular. I mean, he openly supported his players decision to protest and defended them for it. He straight up directly accused the media of racism for the way they treated college athletes. I just adore him.

Coach K also keeps it realer than a motherfucker, but in a different way.

Roy Williams...meh...

I'd say "being caught" saying shit and fuck once in 20 years of being head coach qualifies as not "very often"

You think his "golly gee" attitude is supposed to make him look incompetent or clueless?

You didn't get the original post then. They got audio of him saying it during the game to an official...so him sitting there saying he never says it is bullsiht. I don't care if he said mother fucker or what, but he's a liar....and this is more directed at the UNC fans who think their boy walks on water, but all I hear about from them is how terrible coach K is for using the F word like "I".

Plus, Hansbrough said after the game that he's heard him say it a lot more than us. Point being, he just should have owned up to it and said he let it slip.
