yeah, good time to be in the market for man-toys. I absolutely stole the jet ski I bought (I think--I haven't actually seen it yet . Ivan can say better than I can, haha).I see boats, cars, and even airplanes going for good deals. A friend of my just bought an RV-6 (airplane) with his dad for a SCREAMING deal. I'm town between 330i (w/o fold-down seats) and M3. Leaning 330i now, but that could change tomorrow, and for a deal I couldn't refuse on an M3, I'd definitely jump all over it. I'm concerned about operating and maintenance costs on them, though.
3/16/2009 12:53:07 AM
dont be afraid to pass along some car or bike deals I too am looking for an inline 4 600-750 for the track and a new daily driver (lookin at e90's and e46 m3's)
3/16/2009 1:51:46 AM
i won't put them in this thread, unless i'm thinking about buying it.i put stuff in the craigslist thread sometimes...i found a killer deal on an S2000 a couple of weeks ago.
3/16/2009 1:54:42 AM
^^^haven't you already had a 330?oh yeah, the ski was a damn good deal fo sho. especially with the trailer. as i mentioned over pm, i grilled to dude for a while when we met up and he was definitely legitimately knowledgeable, not just spouting message board/google/magazine bullshit. i could tell from his truck and the ski that he's someone who keeps hit shit in good shape too. it cranks easy and sounds perfect. speaking of, i probably need to let it run for a bit on the flush kit sometime this week, it's been 2-3 weeks and we've had some cold weather which those little batteries hate.[Edited on March 16, 2009 at 2:54 AM. I can just see theduke rolling around in a first model year s2000 with a baby on board diamond just barely visable through the plastic hazed window.get the m3 man. it's pretty much a no brainer. they are retarded cheap and I cant imagine any auto company (esp the ultimate driving machine company) would produce a performance motor that couldn't handle aggressive driving for 100k miles easy. you miss shift, take back all is said. maybe in the long run the rarity of a coupe m3 without smg would help you. the fact that they bring out new models that always look significantly better gives me my doubts on that though.
3/16/2009 8:08:28 AM
^^ cool. also, i guess my dad never got in touch with you about picking it up? at this point, i'll be home in a few weeks if you can put up with it for that much longer.and yeah, i had a 330ci (coupe). If I do it again, I'll get a 330i sedan (stiffer chassis, basically same weight, more practical)...or I might get the M3...or I guess there is a very outside chance that I'll do an S2000/350z/C5.
3/16/2009 10:30:16 AM
Get a C5 convertible, slide a cam in it and stick a bottle in the trunk. I hear that's what the cool people do
3/16/2009 11:27:47 AM
also, my dad had a 330i (along with two X5s, a Z3 2.8, and a 530i). Now he has a 330 convertible. I guess I oughta do the M3 just to round out the family BMW logbook.^^^if I wasn't going to be deploying again, you're right--nearly a no brainer. Actually, I might go ahead and just get the C6, then. With my daughter spending 1 week per month with me, and with my overgrown list of other hobbies, and another deployment sometime (probably early) next year, I don't know if it's worth the extra money for the M3. Also, while I've owned several cars that were as hot or hotter than the M3 (and really, only 1 in the last 5 years that wasn't--the 330ci), and I've bombed a whole bunch of backroads in my day, getting into HPDEs will be another adjustment. I'm not so sure that I wouldn't be better off in the 330i (same reason that I now have an SV650 instead of another GSX-R or something. The time will come for another race-replica, and for more killer sports cars, but I think maybe taking a step back and really getting my driving/riding dialed in first might be the better approach).(all of that said, nobody, including me, will be surprised if I come home with an M3 one day).^ Don't want no stinkin' convertible. Actually, I like them, but then I have to do the roll bar thing, and I lose chassis stiffness over the coupe (although it's minimal on the C5, from what I understand...and S2000s are pretty stiff, too.)[Edited on March 16, 2009 at 11:31 AM. Reason : asfd]
3/16/2009 11:29:52 AM
^^lol ^actually, the c5 was specifically designed as a vert. it's slightly lighter and just as strong as the coupe/frc.
3/16/2009 12:48:56 PM
Seriously Josh, why don't you get something with a big motor instead of yet another slick Jap or Euro prick-car?Although I guess a Vette is a prick-car also Sometimes I'm glad I mostly got over my obsession with propelling myself down the road at two or three times the speed limit in something with two doors.Other times I miss it a little.Camaro still sits forlornly in the garage awaiting it's fate. Not quite sure what I'm going to do with that thing.

3/16/2009 3:59:08 PM
shoot, duke is perfect miata size. height wise anyway.
3/16/2009 8:26:11 PM
I agree; I don't envision a future without a C6 in my garage. I'm just saying that between my lifestyle at the moment (with deployments, training dets, etc keeping me away from home a lot) and wanting to cut my HPDE teeth on something a little more docile than even a stock C6, I'm going to keep putting it off for a little longer.but rest assured, C6 and 997 C4S are pretty much top of my must-own list, and the former is likely to end up with my name on it as soon as it looks like I won't be deploying any more for a while.and yeah, I'm only 5'8". I can fit in any car I want. break, break: I talked to Dan...sounds like he's interested in working over that 292 for me (hopefully with my help...I'd like to get my hands into it, as I've never done internal engine work other beyond a Briggs & Stratton or a model airplane engine).
3/16/2009 11:31:54 PM
You're about 100 times smarter then you need to be to rebuild any engine.Just remember what the guy at the dealership has for formal education. You will be three times as slow though!
3/17/2009 8:26:22 AM
The irony of the grammar errors in Quinn's post -one made by a college educated man- comparing another college educated man to a dealer mechanic, makes this non-native English speaker blush. Internal engine work is easy, and more entertaining the first few times than most other vehicle work, but if you mess up, the consequences are more serious. I would encourage it, with some supervision if possible.

checked out a 330i yesterday with zxappeal. It wasn't a total heap or anything, but it was disappointing (it's the red one on Capital Blvd if anyone else is looking).Called about a sweet deal on an E46 M3 in Norfolk last night, but it had already sold.________________Looks like my granddad already has an aluminum 4-bbl manifold and a set of split headers for the 292 in my '66 pickup (the headers are actually for a '69, and the intake might be as well, but I think they'll fit). Already have a fender to replace the one that's in bad shape. If anyone has any leads on a tailgate for that generation, let me know.Oh, and the engine still cranks right up, although I'm gonna have Dan rebuild it, anyway.
4/12/2009 12:32:50 PM
( If it ain't broke don't fix it )
4/12/2009 2:00:45 PM
are you back in raleigh now?
4/13/2009 6:25:17 PM
i'm in new bern, but i'll be up around raleigh fairly regularly
4/13/2009 7:55:17 PM
shoulda bought a houseboat
4/16/2009 7:59:48 PM
well, now i'm back into a legal fight with my stupid ex since she won't follow the previous court order and allow me to have visitation with my daughter.for that reason, i'm staying away from sports cars and even sporty sedans for a while. i don't want to get so much as a speeding ticket, because i don't want to her to have even the most fragile argument against me.i'm leaning towards just getting an XJ Cherokee or something similar. That, and fixing up the '66 Chevy. I still have fortyeleven other hobbies to keep me busy, and I can still do track days on the SV650.
4/22/2009 7:30:12 PM
Lame, and I don't think she'd have the slightest argument w/an e46 330i.
4/22/2009 9:50:25 PM
no, it's not that she'd have even the slightest argument with any vehicle. it's that she would have a slight argument with my driving record. I don't think it would have much, if any, impact, but I'm not going to give her anything.and even if I get a 330i or something, it is a certainty that I will continue to rack up tickets.
4/22/2009 9:56:15 PM
that sounds more like a life plan
4/25/2009 8:10:03 PM
most self-obsessed thread in the history of the garagewhoopty fuckin do
4/26/2009 1:14:13 AM
planning on picking up a '95 Cherokee (XJ) in the next couple of days. 2-door, 4x4, straight-six.[Edited on April 26, 2009 at 9:01 PM. Reason : if I do, my Ram can go to a new home anytime after that if anyone needs a gorilla of a truck.]
4/26/2009 8:58:45 PM
Bummer thought I was going to have a TWW M3 buddy
4/27/2009 4:29:11 PM
i'll be your tww butt buddy
4/29/2009 8:58:06 AM
Duke, don't get an SUV! She'll use that in court against you. I mean come on man, you're killing the earth with your CO2 spewing hog!
4/29/2009 10:07:43 AM
just buy a yuppie H3
5/1/2009 9:08:10 AM
http://eastnc.craigslist.org/cto/1235080524.htmlprobably picking this up tomorrow morning, or maybe even tonight.
7/2/2009 5:47:38 PM
nice jeep
7/2/2009 7:40:56 PM
7/2/2009 9:38:36 PM
DAMMIT. I can't seem to buy a break. The guy called me tonight and said that he blew a radiator hose. No big deal, except that it sounds to me like he kept driving it anyway and overheated it. He said that it's smoking (I asked him what color, he said "White" ) and making a clanking, knocking sound.I just emailed him back with a significantly reduced offer (significantly reduced from the price we'd agreed on, which was already something less than he was asking). I don't think he'll take it--he has another guy interested in it, and he could get more than what I offered him by just selling the hardtop and then selling the Jeep (especially since it does still run).On the other hand, I can trailer it (the other guy lives in VA Beach) and will pick it up tomorrow with a handful of $100 bills, so we'll see.
7/2/2009 11:46:05 PM
its a jeep, it always smokes leaks oil and makes clunking sounds
7/6/2009 8:27:46 PM
I think I'm getting pretty close to making a deal on an M-Roadster (Z3 type, S52 engine...still a sweet little car, though).
7/14/2009 11:33:08 PM
you're going to look at it today right?
7/15/2009 8:37:11 AM
god dammit..buy a car with some balls for onceas in..torque
7/15/2009 8:43:40 AM
^^ tomorrow, if it doesn't get sold out from under me tonight^ dude, that car has plenty of torque. not that torque is worth much in a sports car, anyway.
7/15/2009 9:32:07 AM
didn't realize they were in the high 200's in torque, oops. i should probably know that considering the place i work at used to paint some of the interior components for them
7/15/2009 9:38:17 AM
is s52 cast iron, if so, lol
7/15/2009 12:13:14 PM
i believe it's an iron block, aluminum head. it's the E36 M3 engine (as opposed to the S54 engine from the E46 M3 that later model Z3 M-Roadsters and all Z4Ms got).
7/15/2009 6:15:01 PM
Well it does have the trailing arm suspension which I hear makes it a real handful.
7/15/2009 6:23:48 PM
yeahit's fine...i'll probably do a track day or two with it, then sell it. hardly any curvy roads down east for me to drive on, anyway.
7/15/2009 6:27:56 PM
Too bad you couldn't find an S54 M......those things are damn impressive and rare.
7/15/2009 8:45:08 PM
i can find one. i just don't want to pay for it--they're stupid expensive. Cool cars, but not what I would buy for that amount of money.
7/15/2009 10:10:34 PM
How much? Just curious
7/15/2009 10:11:19 PM
I've never priced them seriously, because I know I wouldn't pay what they still go for, but I think from high teens to mid-20s.
7/15/2009 10:19:52 PM
Not to mention coupe... But yeah, they command a serious premium over the convertible Z3Ms.
