That building has significant turnover. Though Natty's hung on longer than some others, I imagine the new owners didn't help.

Tbh the beer, compared to most of the non-Roth (or whatever they go by now) Raleigh craft breweries just didn't do it for me..

Yeah just never got into any of their beers. I felt similarly to Full Steam when it opened but its grown on me a lot. Anyway shouldnt have taken dig at them. I've heard Gizmo has improved just can't justify giving them a fourth or fifth chance with so many better options ...

Raleigh Brewing and Trophy are easily my favorite

Natty Greene's is super overrated, which sucks, because that space rules

Crank Arm and Trophy are my favorites, although RBC is not bad at all. I've had some terrific beers from Sub Noir but they're barely ever open.

I enjoyed going there sometimes. my department at work would go there sometimes after school in the afternoons on their pint night.

beer was ok... not my absolute favorite but didn't hate it either.

I've been waiting for market saturation to claim it's first victim. Not surprised. Who's next? It won't be Trophy, that place is always packed and has good pizza/beer.

I don't know that I've ever known anyone who really liked Crank Arm

we've given them a couple of shots and have been let down every time

Broad Street FTW!!!!!!!!! Last night I went to Aviator and Draft Line with a friend. I don't think I ever want to go to Glenwood South again. Way less traffic and people in Fuquay.

There are less people and traffic in FV than Glenwood South? How insightful.

Market saturation had nothing to do with it. Old landlord sold the place and the new landlord purposefully raised the rent above what Natty's could pay to force them out. New group is planning some development there, which will likely be more shitty apartments.

I feel like it would be more decent for the new landlord to just say, "Okay, this is our building now and we're kicking your asses out"

maybe this is illegal, but I don't see why it should be.

why? it at least gives them a potential option of coughing up the extra rent, or gives them the ability to close up on their own terms.

And that is what makes it nice. J&S NY Pizza, Draft Line Brewery, Aviator Smokehouse, Aviator Beer Shop, Aviator Tap House, and The Brick House Bar & Grill are all right together. None of them are ever overfull either, so it's just nicer as long as you are into craft beers.

Man, did you not even read the article?

Most of NG's beers were so so, but I readily enjoy their winter seasonal, Red Nose. It's pretty good in my opinion. And their beer is pretty damn good when it's on sale for $2 pints.

Now find me another bar downtown with a full size shuffle board table you fucks!

Well, did the same owners have the 518 West property (another place I didn't care for)? It sounds like the block just got re-evaluated for property value and the businesses there just couldn't cut it. I understand Natty Greene's couldn't pay the rent but if their beer was good enough to draw more of a crowd then they probably could have stayed. It's pretty obvious which local breweries are in it for max profit and which are in it to make a good product. When you hear places advertise on 99.9, you probably know they are shit right off the bat.

518 was owned by other people. And they sold their property to Google.

And the new owners of the building that Natty Greene's is in wanted to double the rent. It has little to do with "how good you are". When an expense doubles like that it often makes little sense to keep going if you have other options. Oak City Tavern was making money hand over fist but closed b/c their landlord did something similar. (not that I was upset to see them close or anything). I'm not defending the merit of these establishments, just blowing holes in some pretty weak arguments here.

Anyway, it's a pretty big gamble IMO. That spot had high turnover for a years until NG took over. The owners are gambling that they'll draw someone else for even bigger money. Not sure it'll work out.

I find it hard to believe that Natty Greene's signed a five year lease with no option.

I will admit it's hard for a Raleigh Italian restaurant to compete with the likes of Google for that property. You know the owners of Natty Greene's property saw that and thought they could get Apple or something. Now I think it might be funny if they can't get anyone. Although, tech companies are jumping into these buildings all the time now. I just moved into a space like that myself.

Dude, you need to read up There was no "compete with the likes of Google". The owners of the building that 518 was housed in were also the owners of the restaurant. One and the same.

LOL! I actually live in Garner. It takes me about a half hour to get to the bars in Fuquay and in Raleigh. Lately I've been hanging out in Fuquay more because my family and friends like going to Aviator. Raleigh is cool though too. Garner is lame. We don't have anything like Glenwood South, Moore Square, or Broad Street.

Tobacco Road is decent. But I don't see why they needed to move. The original location seemed alright to me.
