Why do you care so much that other people like DMB and want to see them in concert? Why does it bother you so much?
1/21/2009 7:39:34 PM
Because the entire culture built around this mediocre band is not one of celebrating music or the live element of music. Same with Buffett. The promoter might as well play the record and do without the appearance fee for the band. It's not the DMB's fault (although in Buffett's case, he actively promotes the fact that it's really not about music at all), and too often I forget to mention this fact. They're just up therre having fun. I can't blame them for doing a lame shed tour, either, because it's easy to do and it's easy money.I guess the thing that gets me about shed shows, especially the party-style ones like DMB, Buffett, Chesney, etc., is that I don't see where the connection is with the music that is bringing you to the show. You only go to one or two shows a year, and one of them is one where 90% of the audience is too fucked up to notice if the band is actually playing live or not? I just don't get it.For the record, Buffett is miles and miles worse than DMB.Also, FWIW, I feel this way about people who treat sporting events as social soirees. ]
1/21/2009 7:49:55 PM
I like DMB.I like Buffett.I like Chesney. And your opinions are not going to make me change the way I feel about their music. So seriously, what's the point? People are entitled to their opinions, but you're going on and on about how DMB (and others) are just a waste of money and how terrible of a show they put on and how no one is even sober at their shows so what's the point and well...it's just kind of annoying. Enjoy your local bands, enjoy supporting charity, or whatever the hell you were talking about, and let us talk about DMB's new album coming out in April and the fact that we're looking forward to his show this year.
1/21/2009 7:57:38 PM
I never said anything about the quality of the show.In fact, I'll just let DMB go on their merry way, especially with the Avetts opening...a band I don't like, but do respect. To the point, I want to know why you like these artists.I care deeply about music. Probably too deeply, to be honest, but that's my problem. Jimmy Buffett makes music for people who don't care about music, and that's personally offensive to me. It's not about local bands versus national bands, or $70 shows versus $10 shows. It's about generating a response emotionally. I refuse to believe that a Jimmy Buffett show generates a genuine emotional response in anyone that's not blasted. It's not a concert, it's a party...and that's fine, but don't pass it off as a real musical experience.
1/21/2009 8:16:08 PM
its pretty much a fact that DMB sucks ass... they are one of those bands that about 8-9 years ago everyone automatically liked when they got to college "OMG I'm in college, I love dave!"DMB and Buffet are SOOOOOO bad, just horrible... they could release an album of them shitting on a mike and their stupid fans would eat it upI agree with your quest to not just ignore shitty music but try to make other people feel bad for liking the trite corny shit... thank god we didnt just let Hitler do his own thing, his "opinion"and I've noticed that the same people like the same shitty tv shows:LostHouseHeroesand numerous "gritty, push the boundaries crime dramas"[Edited on January 21, 2009 at 8:51 PM. opinions are like assholes. everybody's got one, and it's apparent they're out in full force in this thread!i thank everyone for their opinion on dmb and buffett and whoever else you felt like shitting on tonight. personally, i think it's sad that you care so deeply about music that you want to shit on anyone who feels differently. but that's my opinion.
1/21/2009 9:19:52 PM
it not that they just feel differently, there are plenty of bands that I dont like but I respect them, so I dont care if people like them or not. But pure garbage... I care
1/21/2009 9:21:37 PM
i care that you care. really. it's your delivery that i don't like. you don't see me going around shoving my opinion down your throat and accusing you of liking shit. it's like you want to offend me (and anyone else who likes dmb) so you say the worst things you could possibly think of. makes you look like a big fucking douchebag. then i feel sorry for you.
1/21/2009 9:25:10 PM
you cant say it, i dont like shitty music.
1/21/2009 9:28:34 PM
shitty is an opinion. don't you realize that? everyone is different, everyone has an opinion. i'm sorry you feel that your music choices are the only choices and that anything beyond your realm of goodness is pure and complete shit. i'm sorry you're that closed-minded. again, i feel sorry for you.
1/21/2009 9:31:13 PM
once again, you are stating the opposite of what is really happening, i am open minded enough to not settle for corny trite shit that people like just because its "the thing to like in college""OMG! Margaritaville! I too know the secret added-on words to yell at certain points! we are so open minded!"[Edited on January 21, 2009 at 9:44 PM. Reason : d]
1/21/2009 9:41:27 PM
i am not settling for 'corny trite shit that is the thing to like in college' because i don't feel that it is corny trite shit! i like it! and i didn't like dmb in college, for the record. it wasn't until a year or two ago that i actually decided i liked them enough to possibly see one of their shows. you really are a piece of work.
1/21/2009 9:59:52 PM
"goddamn shaker of salt!!!"
1/21/2009 10:00:48 PM
you're making fun of someone for liking a band. but i guess i should expect no less from a person such as yourself.
1/21/2009 10:03:29 PM
1/21/2009 10:17:47 PM
but our "cliche" only exists because people still like the crap, if they stopped, we would stop
1/21/2009 10:45:14 PM
name 5 bands that you like that aren't shitty/corny/trite/etc
1/21/2009 11:20:39 PM
The ClashThe WhoWilcoFoo FightersWillie Nelson
1/21/2009 11:28:12 PM
shitty, corny, and trite music is totally a matter of opinion. that is all i'm trying to say here. the people who like dmb and who buy his tickets don't feel his concert is at all corny, shitty, or trite.
1/21/2009 11:28:55 PM
parrots and pirates!I just hate crappy dumb music that the musician doesnt even remotely have to challenge themselves with to know that their fans will love it as long as it throws in a few standard items: mention a beach, drinking, some pirates, a chorus that everyone can wrap their arms around their drunk friends and yell, cheap sing a long gimmicks that ceased to be funny or original decades ago etc"OMG! he just replaced the location named in the song with the name of our city! thats SO awesome! woooo!"[Edited on January 21, 2009 at 11:38 PM. yeah man, that Kenny Chesney fella, THATS country!I mean, its Hank Williams -> Johnny Cash -> Willie Nelson -> George Jones -> Kenny Chesney
1/21/2009 11:51:09 PM
Dude, I'm a pretty big Wilco fan. They're fucking corny.
1/21/2009 11:52:34 PM
1/21/2009 11:52:48 PM
^^ Wilco is corny? um no, they are nowhere near "She thinks my tractor's sexy" corny, not even close
1/21/2009 11:53:45 PM
I'm taking about Sky Blue Sky-era Wilco, here; they're pretty corny in their own right. It's a dad rock, Weather Channel, MOR, snooze fest these days.Sorry, though, to interrupt the DMB thread with discussion of music that only kinda sucks.Carry on
1/21/2009 11:56:35 PM
"boring" is different than corny.or you could claim that wilco takes itself too serious, but they would never be considered corny[Edited on January 22, 2009 at 12:00 AM. Reason : d]
1/21/2009 11:57:44 PM
All I'm saying is that the music on SBS (save one or two tracks) is lame, boring, and corny; corny in the sense that it isn't very exciting or adventurous, that it's just taking the path of least resistance, that it's elevator muzak. It's corny because I've heard it a million times before by bands with far less talent than Wilco. Anyway, back to talking about Dave Matthews or whatever
1/22/2009 12:05:24 AM
SBS is weird to me... I LOVE the overall "sound" but not really any of the songs... if that makes sense... it would be like a beautifully shot movie with a horrible plot

god this thread is fucking gay. I hate music snobs. music is one of the most blessed things we should be thankful for and appreciate no matter its presentation or origin. Everyone has a right to enjoy any form of music that's pleasing to them and makes them happy. and if you all haven't noticed, arguing on the internet is useless. And changing someone's mind by calling their favorite band corny or cliche is about as immature as it gets. If everyone had the same musical tastes the world would be a pretty boring place.

no, it's not the opposite of that at all. Instead of just ignoring bands and fans of music you don't care for, you go out of your way to argue with them on a message board to try and prove that the music they like is crap and the music you like is good.
1/22/2009 11:11:41 AM
so how do you feel about OAR
1/22/2009 11:13:09 AM
^^ no, its not bands that "I dont care for" as you should plainly be able to read in the post right above yours... its shit bands. My opinion on if I like them or not has NOTHING to do it with it. Its the musical talent involved. Want another example so you can understand? I dont care for cheesy metal, but I can admit that Yngwie Malmsteen is incredibly talented even though I cant stand his music.^ no idea, never heard one song by them.[Edited on January 22, 2009 at 11:17 AM. so if it's not your opinion, who makes the final decision on who is a crap band and who isn't?is there a classification process or scientific method to prove these things? or...or is it completely subjective?EDIT: I'm not defending bad music, there is a ton of it out there. I'm defending people's freedom to enjoy whatever music pleases their ears.

^^^ of course they have the "freedom" to listen to it, I am not calling for a government enforced control system on music, dont be stupid. I just dont think they SHOULD settle for shit music and should hold artists to slightly higher standards than "wooo hoo, I like the beach, this song is about beaches and pirates! I dont care that the other 45 songs I've already heard are also about beaches and pirates!"I worked security at concerts during undergrad and by far the worst shows were Buffet shows. He would do the same EXACT mindless show 2-3 years in a row, even with the same cheesy crowd banter. Not similar, THE SAME. Why? because he knew his fucktard fans would settle for mediocre shit as long as they get to wear wacky hats and throw balloons and beach balls around. Same thing with Chesney, he knows that millions of white girls will "love his music" just because hes hot to them, hell, he could probably do a song about a piece of farm machinery being sexy and idiots would love it, oh wait, he did. He isnt 1/10th the country musician that George Jones, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash are/were, not even close. ^ that wasnt the only requirement. Its talent and doing something with the music, not just coming out with the same shit over and over because you know your mindless fans have zero expectations. They would be a great backing band for an artist that actually takes a chance every now and then and tries something different. [Edited on January 22, 2009 at 11:43 AM. Reason : d]

Ha. Gotta love this thread. The only reason a person can like DMB is because they are hopping on the bandwagon. The only reason a person doesn't like DMB is because they are hopping on the bandwagon. Even a godwin for good measure.
