2why would you use a beta os as your primary?
1/5/2009 10:06:17 PM
seems stable and it's apparently faster than xp or vista.thinking about giving it a try for a week or so.
1/5/2009 10:08:14 PM
so how does this fit in with Vista? I realize this is really Vista 2.0, so is MS going to support both OS's or are they going to scratch Vista after 7 gets going for a while (similar to XP)?
1/5/2009 10:09:37 PM
1/5/2009 10:18:42 PM
why would you make it your primary OS when its going to expire in 30 days??
1/5/2009 10:29:58 PM
^Because an expiration can be removed:http://www.blogsdna.com/1802/remove-time-based-expiry-of-windows-7-beta-1-build-7000.htm...Just sayin'
1/6/2009 12:58:23 AM
^^^^Wait, they scratched XP after Vista got going for a while? Like scratched its back and extended its life cycle? Maybe you meant Me vs. XP.I'm sure they would support both, as Vista has been out for a while and 7 is probably a year out. Personally, I'm looking to leapfrog Vista, maybe even 7 depending on the reviews.[Edited on January 6, 2009 at 8:17 AM. Reason : -]
1/6/2009 8:15:56 AM
^ i don't think you're going to want to skip 7...by far, XP is better than vista, but win7 is vista minus the pre-SP1 crap, plus boatloads of improvementi can't say i'm surprised that win7 is just vista SE...just pissed at m$ for not sticking to winfs and releasing vista as it should have been (though i understand that they determined the time gap between XP and a new OS to be too big to wait if they did it properly)
1/6/2009 8:53:41 AM
^^MS is going to stop supporting XP.... sorry, I didn't mean that XP is currently done for, but that's what MS has planned (at least they were planning this) to do in the near future
1/6/2009 9:10:08 AM
I think you're getting confused. MS isn't going to stop supporting XP, they're just trying to stop selling new copies. They've promised to support it through at least 2014.]
1/6/2009 12:56:27 PM
hmmm... ok. I read/heard they were going to stop supporting it (no tech help, updates, etc). guess that was wrong
1/6/2009 1:04:09 PM
no they just REALLY want people to be forced into Vista when buying a new computer. But support for XP will go on for a while.http://www.engadget.com/2008/06/24/microsoft-promises-to-support-windows-xp-until-2014/

I'll stick with the one that can be already cracked to work long term when is microsoft going to figure out their taskbar needs to work like ultramon makes it work? i'm really getting annoyed by that little fact[Edited on January 9, 2009 at 9:22 AM. Reason : asf]
1/9/2009 9:16:28 AM
That's a shame. I had to abandon Ultramon when it started causing some serious buggy behavior on my system. If my system went to the screen saver it would come back with the task bar at the top of the screen and the system would just lock up completely.Too bad. Ultramon would have been awesome.
1/9/2009 9:45:41 AM
your only problem was with the screensaver? just don't use a screensaver or have the monitor turn off instead or something..and is anybody else having weird problems on windows 7 when opening networked files in excel or word?? when i try to open something off the fileserver it hangs for 2-3 minutes then opens fine..but i can copy/paste it to my desktop in under a second and open it just fine from there (and i dare say it opens faster than in XP or vista...) works fine from every other OS with the same settings for everything i can find..gah[Edited on January 9, 2009 at 9:53 AM. Can't turn off the screen saver it's set by a group policy. I've thought about writing a mouse wiggle app that shifts the mouse over by a pixel every 29:59 so it never goes to a screen saver.[Edited on January 9, 2009 at 10:08 AM. Reason : -]

k..earlier problem of slow file opening was fixed by turning windows firewall off.. d'oh.more like that + adding the file server to trusted locations in excel.now it's as fast as any other windows OS i've used ..still working on bluetooth mouse issue.[Edited on January 9, 2009 at 11:00 AM. If you find a bug, report dat shit. If its a legit bug worth fixing and hasn't been reported MS might send you a free copy when it goes rtm.

the problem is when you login it has you change shit in your profile, and the profile servers cant handle it. I wonder if they forgot to reinforce them.

i'm gonna run it on my macbook pro w/ 4gigs of ram. should i try 32 or 64bit?also i'll probably play with it in vmware fusion 2 first. which would be easier to virtualize?[Edited on January 9, 2009 at 12:58 PM. Reason : dfdf]
1/9/2009 12:57:34 PM
^ - in December I ran build 7000 (32 bit i think) in a vm (fusion 2) with really good results. Plus, I was only giving it a gig of RAM. Seems to be a really solid OS so far.

I don't give a fuck about the media. I want my live account to be tied to a legitimate beta key. ^not trying to disrespect the post by any means, I'm actually using the link. I meant that all day I've just been trying to sign up for a key, I figured I would be grabbing the dvd from usenet anyway because of snail like transfer speeds from MS.[Edited on January 9, 2009 at 5:21 PM. links keep stalling for me :/
1/9/2009 5:22:40 PM
I was able to get to the final step earlier in the day. The URL actually consisted of "productkeys/x64/default.aspx" or something to that effect. Of course it error'd out before I was successful. I wonder if anyone got a key today?
1/9/2009 5:25:08 PM
1/9/2009 5:27:15 PM
my feelings exactly, i want a product key, i could wait a few days for the download.
1/9/2009 5:28:06 PM
i don't get this, this is THE biggest software company in the world and they can't get a freakin' product key distribution to work without their infrastructure being too busy. if anybody should have the infrastructure in place for this it's microsoft... i mean learn from Mozilla's mistake a couple months ago.[Edited on January 9, 2009 at 5:30 PM. I actually just sent an idea to avoid this in the future to they distribution team
1/9/2009 6:14:39 PM
is that not possible?i thought there was a limit to # of registrations, that's why i'm upset. if not, then i can wait.
1/9/2009 6:20:16 PM
anyone know what the cost will be to upgrade from vista (for final release)
1/9/2009 6:32:59 PM
The limit was supposedly 2.5 millionhowever given the huge amount of interest, I wouldn't be surprised if they just leave it open.
1/9/2009 6:36:48 PM
woohooit's days like this that i'm glad i have an MSDN subscription
1/9/2009 8:14:40 PM
I just went to the site and had no problems getting it. Seems it might be fixed.
