BMW 740il ...10 years old or benz W124 or similar variety. long commute means you want used, long wheel base comfortable car. i did 120mile daily commute for work for 3 years and drove everything from GTI, m3, lexus es300, camry, taurus, sonata, accord, lumina. longer wheel base cars were the most comfortable, everything else got tiresome really fast. after a while you stop caring about gas mileage, power or newness. only think that matters is comfort. trust me.[Edited on December 27, 2008 at 7:27 PM. ^ I would think that in a long commute, gas mileage would matter as well as comfort. Newness and all the rest doesn't really matter. I can see what you are saying with the long wheel base, however, how long do you really need to be comfortable?

^^ yeah its ridiculous how much difference the 18" inch wheels make on my highway commutes compared to my civics 14" and especially my old corollas 13" doughnut tires.^ while shitty in the city; my A4 gets great gas mileage on the highway 31 mpg.

I work at a rental car place with lots of GM's in the fleet, the new Malibu is one of the best on the lot imo...great interior, nice ride and good mileage. I dont know anything about how it will be mechanically but I do know the Impalas are one of the worst pieces of shit on the lot, those and Chrysler Sebrings are constantly being repaired. The Pontiac G8 is awesome, only thing we have nicer are the Caddys. I've only owned Hondas/Toyotas but when I'm in the market for a new car I may look at American too.[Edited on December 27, 2008 at 10:08 PM. Reason : .]

Is comfort on the highly purely a function of your wheelbase or do other factors play along such as shocks and the output of your engine at highway speeds?

Also, you just got a new job. Why get one so fast? 20K is quite a bit right from the get go IMO.
