^Wow, that story is almost identical to how I got MY one and only speeding ticket. Going down 49. Pulled for 70 in a 55, by a state trooper in Cabarrus County. I usually go 10 over on that part of 49. For some reason, I too would have had to go to Albemarle/Stanley County. Only differences are that I was intentionally speeding, and that my lawyer handled the ticket stuff so I wouldn't have to go.[Edited on December 10, 2008 at 10:31 AM. Reason : .]

i think its less of a disgrace and more of an indicator that we're in a goddammned recession teetering on the brink of depression. travelling that far for the championship game and then again for a bowl is too much spend for the average family.
12/10/2008 10:21:01 AM
^^,^^^ doesn't sound like the 64-49 route is better than the 40-85 route if you can't even go 10 over without getting a ticket...i'll take 70mph speed limits any day over getting speeding tickets for going 65
12/10/2008 10:24:43 AM
Don't let that fool you, I usually go 75-80 most of the way, unless I'm going through a town or I'm near Cabarrus, where the cops are all huge cunts.
12/10/2008 10:26:52 AM
You have to factor in that the 85-40 route is about 30 miles longer. There are very few cops on 49-64, but you do have to be smart when you are going through the towns. Also 49 is for the most part a two lane road so you can't go too fast through there. I love the hilly part that's two lanes though where the lone gas station is. I also love the part on 64 when it goes up to 65 mph. I'll do 80+ through there. I've never seen a cop through that part.
12/10/2008 10:37:16 AM
Wow. I used to go 64 -> 49 even before 64 was 4 lanes all the way to Asheboro.[Edited on December 10, 2008 at 11:01 AM. Reason : my read-fu was poor ^ answered my question]

49/64 and I-85/I-40 are basically identical trips from a time point of view. I've mixed it up the last few times and the best I can get on the interstate going 15 over the entire time is 2hrs 30 minutes (this is to south charlotte) and the best I can get on 49/64 is about 2 hrs 40 minutes.Pro's for the back way-more scenic-good at avoiding rush hour trafficCons for the back way-more dangerous roads (statistically)-if you get stuck behind a slow car and can't pass for a long time you're SOL-worse gas mileage due to not traveling a constant speedUnless I'm faced with nasty traffic (like around Thanksgiving) I'm taking the highway 9/10 times.
12/10/2008 11:00:45 AM
I'd always go 64 -> 49, but you're talking to a guy that would rather go 64 -> 421 to get to Greensboro instead of a straight shot on 40 If they would build a bypass to Siler City like they did for Pittsboro 64 would be golden. I've never been through Siler City without the following happening to me:Guy yanks out of Hardee's (or other fast food joint) at the last possible second, forcing me to jam my breaks until he builds up speed. Bonus points if they do this to you while you are in the left lane. Even more bonus points if there isn't another vehicle on the road for miles behind you, which would have made their merge onto the highway completely safe had they waited another 5 seconds. Some dude going 10 under in the left lane. Self explanatory. In Siler City I always spent my time weaving in and out of some slow, slow traffic - slow despite the 45 mph speed limit. We're talking 30-35 mph.[Edited on December 10, 2008 at 11:19 AM. Reason : -]

I'm not saying 49/64 doesn't have the potential to be a superior way to go from Charlotte to Raleigh, but in its current form it is not.

Well for the most part 49 is a tree lined road the entire way. There's a lake you pass over as well (High Rock Lake). If you are heading to Raleigh and look to your right as you pass over it you will see a giant house on top of a hill/mountain. Also when on 64 you get to pass over Jordan Lake which is cool. I much prefer the tree lined country roads to the highways lined with little shops and Cracker Barrels, that I can stand the few minutes that I'm in the little towns like Siler City, Asheboro, Pittsboro, etc.

^My condolences for having to be a part of the CMS school system as it approached the height of its utter failure.
12/10/2008 3:45:57 PM
haha. Luckily I actually went to Charlotte Catholic, because yes I agree CMS is so backwards and screwed up its going to take some major restructuring to fix. We def wouldn't have been able to afford it if my mom didn't work there and we also got extra financial help but I felt like it was fairly academically stimulating despite some of the stupid parts of going there.
