bdmazur you should be a Twins fan...if you hate the Braves so much, you should cheer for the team that defeated them in the 1991 World Series.

I cheer for the Redskins to fuck up all their long snaps and then recover them cleanly and get the punt off because the long snapper went to Carolina.

It is a weird kinda knot in my stomach every punt. Which is often, of late!

I will admit my status as a Mets fan was the original source of my anti-Atlanta sentiment, but when my favorite teams from every other sport have rivals in that miserable place, it just piles on.

Don't worry Braves fans. You guys regained SOME of your status as a hated team of mine by completely lying down all season to the Phillies. 0-9 in Atlanta? Fucking seriously? I bet Skip was dancing in his grave (is it too soon for Skip Caray Jokes?) seeing the Braves lose to the Phillies in a pennant race.

You against the Braves in '91 because of their rivalry with the Mets? Even though the Braves were in the West? Even though the Braves/Mets Rivalry didn't really even begin until '95 or '96?

This is a pretty weak troll job, even for a Mets fan.

You sound like a fucking moron. You had to "choose" to become a braves fan at some point in your life. You're not "born" being a fan. Even if your dad or grandpa or uncle was a fan doesn't mean you have to be. It's your life - choose who you want to cheer for.

Quote :
"I understand that the lack of a Carolina MLB team causes the need for baseball fans to cheer for someone somewhere, but why would you ever pick Atlanta or any other rival city?"

What would you suggest would be an acceptable team to cheer for? It would be reasonable for a fan to cheer for a team regionally, right? Otherwise, you've got to have some kind of connection to another region of the country to have a motive for being a fan of some west coast team. So for someone in North Carolina, we're looking at the Baltimore Orioles, the Washington Nationals, or the Atlanta Braves? The Florida Marlins and Tampa Bay Rays are farther south than Atlanta.

The point was that for lots of folks (myself included), there never was a conscious decision made. I never sat down and thought, "Braves, or Mets, or Yankees, or Orioles, or ...". A Braves fan is just something that I've always been.

I already had a dislike for Atlanta by 91, the Hornets/Hawks games were enough to get it going. I wasn't all out anti-Braves until 96, but I still knew then that Atlanta was a bad place.

Do you beat off to pictures of Sherman?

--

^ Dude, pro teams are entirely different from college teams, I've said that a thousand times. There are no pro baseball teams in NC, I could not have attended the University of the Atlanta Braves. It's not even close to cheering for a school that you never attended.

--

V I don't give a fuck who anyone roots for. It's dumb to hate on people for their professional allegiances, that's all.

Except for guys who have two favorite baseball teams, which is kinda ~

nice loyalty!!

hypothetical:
so you are 60, you have been rooting for team A from out of state, or just not local, your whole life. you have supported them through champ seasons and basement seasons, bought tons of gear, taken your kids to games, brought them up as fans.
then, team b moves into or starts up in your local area/state. all of a sudden you are going to drop your lifelong team and go with team b?

pretty dumb IMO

but ok

so you are 16-18, you ahve been watching games with you dad for 10 years, at least, you have all the posters on your wall. now you just rip them down?

it was like me growing up an nc state fan in greenville among all these ecu people who hated state. i didnt know any other way to be and i took all the crap that game my way. i went to unc-a my first 2 years of college and even knew some people on the bball team, everyone was shocked that i would root for state over unc-a, but to me, there was no way i could root against state, it was in my blood.

How about my Grandfather, who has been a Giants fan since the 1930's, was there for the Greatest Game Ever Played in 1958 and remained loyal to this day. But he moved from Brooklyn to Charlotte in 1970, and when the Panthers showed up 25 years later, he shared his loyalty between the two teams.

I'm not saying you can't have loyalty for any other team, just not any team from Atlanta.

The first time I went to a Giants vs. Panthers game was in 97 or 98 I think...pretty sure it was a MNF game. My dad and I sat there in silence because we couldn't decide who to cheer for. I think the Giants won 21-17 if my memory serves me right.

Regular season matchups usually end up that way...not really cheering for anyone. The last time they played a regular season game it was the end of the season and the results didn't matter (Panthers were already eliminated). The playoff game they had against each other a few years ago I missed because I was on a plane to Mississippi to do Katrina relief (Panthers won that game though). This year's matchup shouldn't have any playoff implications other than a possible preview, but I won't be picking a team. If they play in the Championship game our family will pick the Giants because they've been in our hearts longer.

So you are basically saying that the NFC South is our rivals, does that mean that every southeastern hockey division city is our rival. That doesn't leave many teams to pull for. With that said, Cardinals nation is the bomb.com

OK so the decision wasn't "conscious", but it was a decision, nonetheless. I mean, you don't just wake up one morning and say "I think I'm a Braves fan" out of the blue. You gather information over the course of time, and you think about your feelings and your personality and how it all fits together. Eventually, you decide that you are a fan of one team over the rest.

What you're really saying is: You've been a Braves fan ever since you decided to be a Braves fan.

because you're not a robot and you can make a conscious decision on who to root for. my dad has always been a yankees fan. i was born in the DC area, and despite my dad's influence i've always pulled for the orioles because they were my home team.

The Orioles? Baltimore is a pretty awful city.

What about the Reds? We're in their designated market area. They have a nice river. I guess I'm a Reds fan now. Thanks, Internet guy."

how does baltimore being an awful city have anything to do with the team? i guess maybe you've seen a couple episodes of the wire, but camden yards is heaven on earth. and i've been to atlanta. you know that place has got some pretty shitty areas too, right? and technically we're in the orioles' market area too. time warner cable is just being a bunch of cocksuckers refusing to carry MASN. if they don't have it by next spring after losing 3 fucking arbitration cases i'm going to commit a crime.

why the fuck would it be put in atlanta anyway? There's no real logical reason for it to be there. Stock car racing basically began in north carolina. Most of the teams are based in charlotte. Hell there's not even a regional office or anything based in atlanta, there's just a race.

If you were going to put the hall of fame in another city INSTEAD of charlotte, the only one that makes sense is Daytona.

I have cheered for the Braves since elementary school. Since TBS was always on as a kid that meant the braves were always on. When I say always on I mean ALWAYS. Cubs were cool too but that is too far from NC. also Helped my first season watching the braves that they went from worst to first? so here we are 17-18 years later. As for the falcons hate em. Like I said you can tell where I am from...
Carolina Panthers-NFL
NC State Wolfpack-All College Sports
Carolina Hurricanes-NHL
Atlanta Braves-MLB
Dale Jr.-Nascar
Charlotte Bobcats-NBA
Boo Weekley-PGA

in that exact order.
