That's probably one of his staff's computer.

I think Obama DOES have an iPhone though.

well this says
"• He uses an Apple Mac laptop "
http://tinyurl.com/50-things-obama

who knows if that's true, or if they were just judging it based on pictures like above. THere have been several other pictures of both him and Biden using iPhones, and of several other of his staffers using Macs.

^ I remember back during the primaries, he was specifically asked what platform he uses, and he said Windows. I may be misremembering though.

Does anyone know of any full featured system diagnostics that will check out all the hardware in your mac?

I'm trying to diagnose what I think may be a hardware failure in my macbook.

From what i can tell there's no search feature, you still have to update groups and headers. I'm talking about a search box where you type something in and it searches all of usenet for you regardless of group.

holy shit, that's awesome.
Definitely needs some work to make the motions more reliable, but
1) what a great idea for interacting with the computer
2) that would make an excellent party trick

played with it some more. The Play button seems to be very tough to activate, although the left/right buttons work very well. I guess there is a high tolerance on the Play button so you don't accidentally it hit.
I found it works very well if you hold a sheet of white paper, folded to about 1/8th the size. It picks up the white paper very well. Except when in the best lighting, it would only pick up my hand part of the time (it wouldn't work at all for a black guy! )

would be nice if you could swipe by album or artist first, then drill down into the songs, instead of swiping only the songs

After using Pages for a few days, I wanted to throw Office 2008 out a fucking window. Not only is it much lighter on the processor, once you're used to the interface, it's 2x as fast to get something done.

Keynote is even better...

and I use Numbers for course management (in semesters where I teach) - keeping roll, grades, etc.

yeah, if they release a new product within 14 days of your purchase, you can go trade it in for free.

it's up to the store manager if it's past 14 days, but they've done it up to two months out for me.

CMD+tab cycles through different applications

CMD+~ cycles through windows in an app

But how do you get to windows that are hidden or minimized? It pisses me off that i can only cycle through non minimized windows.

CMD+tab does allow you to bring up hidden apps, and it will bring all previously hidden windows to the foreground. It will also bring a minimized app to the foreground, but will not un-minimize the window. i'm not sure how to un-minimize a window using the keyboard

--

oh yeah, you can use Witch. It's a cmd+tab replacement (or you can assign it to somethig else, like Option+tab) that shows you all Windows (included minimized), instead of all Apps

given the newest version of Parallels.

Should I get Parallels or VMware? I need one or the other ASAP. My trial of VMware expired but it was really slow. The only Parallels I've worked with was the previous version. Any input?

you're saying Parallels 4 is faster than Fusion 2?

I went from Parallels 2 to Fusion 2, and Fusion was much faster at the time, and the Unity mode worked better than Coherence mode. I haven't used Parallels 3 or 4, though.
In one of those reviews, it says that Parallels 4 still doesn't fully support dual monitors, or it doesn't recognize them as 2 montiors like it should.

I just bought Little Snitch and Saft for Safari. Two great programs.

It's amazing how so many Mac programs phone home, even those programs who have nothing to do with the Internet.

hah, yeah

while you have little snitch enabled, start up Calculator

little snitch is, in my opinion, one of the most essential pieces of software for a mac

^^yes. previous versions of parallels were definitely slower than fusion, but that is no longer the case. i've never had the need to run dual monitors inside of a VM.

i use it because i have an external monitor set up to the right of my main screen (MBP 15"). On the main screen, I have the Mac Dock on the left side, and the Windows Taskbar mounted vertically on the right side of the main screen, in Unity Mode. But even though the Taskbar is mounted on my main screen, I can still drag Windows windows over the Taskbar and onto the external monitor to work on. If I understand correctly, you cannot do this on Parallels - if you had a second monitor, you would have to mount the Taskbar on the right side of the external monitor.

Know what i like about OSX?

I like how when you empty the trash, for example, you hit Enter/OK to confirm, the trash goes away, and the Trash window closes. So simple. yet so convenient. This happens with almost all windows that are no longer pertinent after hitting ok like Software Update. No Updates, hit OK, window gone.

Why isn't Windows onto this? Even in Windows 7, you stare at the empty trash window after emptying it...

well yeh. you can do that on the mac too of course.

I'm just saying. This an example of being smart that Windows is missing. Why do i want to look at an Update window after i just clicked OK confirming that i've read there are no updates?

because when windows says it does something you don't trust it and have to verify.

So if you empty the trash bin and it closes the window you'll still need to reopen the window to make sure it really did what it says.

If you ask it to do something (empty the trash), there's no inherent reason you need to verify that the trash was, in fact, emptyed. If there is a problem, it will let you know. Otherwise, it's safe to assume there was no problem.

This is a long help UNIX philosophy (which OS X is based on) from the command-line - if an action executes without error, then there does not need to be any output or confirmation (apart from whatever the action necessitates). If there is an error, the user gets a notification and decides what the best course of action is. This helps emmensly in scripting when a script only has to watch for error flags.
