no netbook

i'm ok with it so long as people carry their freakin' cable with them, it's just so lame to have to transfer your presentation to a PC b/c you can't connect to any external video source
10/14/2008 2:24:45 PM
i have to say.... if I run into some money in the next few months (Christmas bonus, anyone?) I might take the plunge on the new display. I already need a new external display (airline f'ed up my current Dell monitor), and I really like the integrated features, like the magsafe, USB, speakers and iSight. http://arstechnica.com/journals/apple.ars/2008/10/14/up-close-photos-of-the-new-24-apple-display

good overviewhttp://www.apple.com/mac/whichmacbook/http://www.apple.com/mac/whichmacbook/compare.htmli love the black bezel around the screen
10/14/2008 3:09:47 PM
Those trackpads look fucking sweet.
10/14/2008 3:21:56 PM
Does it FINALLY support dual external displays? for the love of everything good and holy, please fucking say yes.
10/14/2008 3:27:44 PM
interesting that they pretty quietly upgraded the entire line to use DDR3 RAM instead of DDR2
10/14/2008 4:14:35 PM
the new trackpad is big enough that you can still rest your thumb where the button used to be, and use your thumb to click if you wanthttp://arstechnica.com/journals/apple.ars/2008/10/14/answers-about-the-new-buttonless-macbook-trackpad
10/14/2008 4:51:27 PM
looks like you could scramble an egg on it!
10/14/2008 5:01:52 PM
I think the DDR3 is a big feature lol, surprised I just figured it out from reading this thread.I still don't care for the black keyboard and am so-so on the glossy black screen bezel. Seems like it just doesn't fit the overall design and doesn't look as sleek as the old macbook pros.

What about the heat? That's been the single issue keeping me from buying a MacBook for two generations. Can you actually use it on your lap now? Will it melt anything it touches still?
10/14/2008 5:51:15 PM
my mb pro has never had a problem getting too hot unless you use it on a down comforter or something for a while during pretty hard use then put it on your lap[Edited on October 14, 2008 at 5:57 PM. Reason : but yes, in that condition it will melt your skin lol]
10/14/2008 5:57:39 PM
will these be available at best buy immediately? i wanna go look, but don't wanna drive 30 miles

Looks pretty freaking hawt to me. I'm a sucker for machined aluminum bits, what can i say. No seams... *drool*Its nice that the macbook is now a semiviable option now. Its now built right and has passable graphics. I'm still not sure that i could live w/ a 13" though.. hrmm that plus a cinema display... I'll be saving my pennies.

My Early 08 15" Macbook Pro stays at a fine temperature doing email and websurfing. But if I'm watching a movie or using VMWare Fusion for too long, i start worrying about my future ability to have kids.....My wife's 1st generation Intel MacBook (white plastic) stays relatively cool, though^ i'm uhh.... pretending I wasn't laid off yesterday! How about, I'll buy one with my signing bonus for the next job which I'm sure is just around the corner [Edited on October 14, 2008 at 8:13 PM. Reason : .]

Two finger scrollTwo finger zoom (or change text size)Two finger rotateThree finger back/forwardFour finger expose/dashboard/app switcher (I suppose you'll probably be able to change this in the preferences)all are insanely fucking cool.i want a mbpro just for this trackpad.
10/14/2008 8:44:37 PM
^^ you forgot that this is TWW. Multi-finger gestures on a trackpad can be quite confusing for some.
10/14/2008 8:46:20 PM
every picture of the new laptops on apple's website, and videos makes me lol. even they have reflections and glare from the glossy screen. that would drive me crazy. my powerbook was very cumbersome for me to ctrl + click and still is unless I use the modified touchpad firmware or an external mouse. good job on accessibility, apple. i hope the new touchpads are better]
10/14/2008 8:47:06 PM
holy shit, Australia got fucked in pricing. As did the U.K.

that's why i said i hope it's an improvement over my powerbook. ctrl + click with right hand = mucho sucko
10/14/2008 9:15:15 PM
oh right, one arm. forgot about thatyeah, for real - you will love the two-finger right-click, and all the other gestures you can do with one hand on the trackpad
10/14/2008 9:35:59 PM
for real, i've only messed w/ the current 2 finger stuff, but its very slick and works effortlessly. from what i've been reading the clickable trackpad and four finger stuff is quite intuitive as well.
10/14/2008 10:19:28 PM
I love my glossy screen on my early 08 MBP, which still has a plastic covering. The new ones have a glass covering, but apparently the LEDs are so bright they can overcome some of the glarehttp://www.macworld.com/article/136063/2008/10/macbook_first_look.html

I don't know what it takes to support it on the graphics card end, but DisplayPort supports daisy chaining multiple displays.
10/15/2008 8:52:53 AM
10/15/2008 9:07:17 AM
you still got two fingers right? that's not hardware enough for ya?
10/15/2008 9:18:37 AM
The one button mouse always has been dumb and always will be dumb. It's really just being stubborn for the sake of being stubborn at this point.
10/15/2008 10:01:02 AM
I think it most definitely was a case of being stubborn for quite a while, but now with multi-touch trackpads, I think i am on board with them in saying physical buttons are arbitrary and needless. and of course with desktops it's a non-issue because they've supported multi-button mouses for years
10/15/2008 10:19:11 AM
^
10/15/2008 10:25:54 AM
my dad's 2007 mbp burned the shit out of my thigh when i was using it w/ shorts on. all i was doing was surfing. that's the one thing i don't like about them. it's a laptop, you're supposed to be able to use it in your lap [without getting burned].
10/15/2008 10:31:35 AM
^ that's why they don't actually call them laptops anymore...they're called "notebooks"
10/15/2008 10:45:59 AM
the stubbornness comes from the people that think its dumb to have an intuitive trackpad that can detect between left and right mouse clicks. You don't need a visual aid of a second button to know how to right click.
10/15/2008 11:16:59 AM
you mean double click
10/15/2008 11:18:52 AM
10/15/2008 11:21:09 AM
left click is now single clickright click is now double click (or maybe corner click)double click is now...super click?[Edited on October 15, 2008 at 11:25 AM. Reason : double click=fingers]
10/15/2008 11:23:46 AM
^on the new trackpads? I didn't read into all the gestures etc....but that does sound lame. I really like the 2 finger clicks for right click.
10/15/2008 11:25:24 AM
the things people argue about...i'm loling all over myself here.
