we have been on a doc. kick lately, the last one we got was The Corporation. was good. also, Mysterious Skin was pretty neat. i love joseph gordon-levitt. PLUS. DID YOU KNOW? you can stream movies online for free for most plans. i thought you had to pay for them, but i just found out you do not. so, if you have/get an s-video cable, you can stream to the tv! i'm sure you knew that, but i was excited to find out

I saw someone mention Throne of Blood earlier. I've been using netflix to watch a lot of Kurosawa films and I'd recommend them in this order for someone wanting to get into them:Seven Samurai: Its a classic that is the source of so much of what came after it in moviesYojimbo / Sanjuro: Very watchable KurosawaRashomon: Another important Kurosawa film that's easier to watch once you've gotten a feel for his style and Toshiro Mifune's actingThrone of Blood: Mentioned earlier, my favorite. Macbeth in the style of Noh theaterThe Hidden Fortress: Provided a lot of the inspiration for starwars expecially the peasants on which R2D2 and C3PO were based.Red Beard: Kurosawa's last movie with Toshiro Mifune and one of the bestRan: Kurosawa's not at his best after losing Mifune and most of his other collaborators but makes one last great movie.Stray Dog: I'm not as much as a fan of Kurosawa's films set in post-war Japan but I really liked this one.The Lower Depths: Interesting message on religion and our need for illusions. Also, all the Kurosawa DVDs that I've gotten from netflix have been criterion editions, so they come with really outstanding commentary tracks by authors of books about Kurosawa films.
1/19/2009 10:26:18 PM
I just watched this. Good movie but after the first scene I was like goddamn you Family Guy!
1/22/2009 11:19:34 PM
1/23/2009 12:12:52 AM
^ I agree. After watching yojimbo, it's a lot easier to appreciate other Kurosawa movies. Its a good way to get to know Mifune also.
