Can you do real time updates? Do you need a passenger laptop worker? I've been using all the hills in north raleigh but I cant update real time. I log and adjust....slowly. Things are decent now just a few lean spots. Trying to keep the gas mileage decent so I'm spending a ton of time tuning the vacuum part throttle. I don't even know if i will turn closed loop back on. I had bad hesitation with 15.5:1 below 1800rpms. Ramble ramble but yeah if you need any help PM me.
6/3/2009 8:52:36 AM
yes i can update real-time. not sure if i need an extra set of hands, but i will let you know if i do.
6/3/2009 9:21:02 AM
it just looks so clean

update?
7/5/2009 6:16:23 PM
i've had a little time to mess around with the tune, but i have been pretty swamped for the most part.
7/6/2009 9:23:33 AM
i hate swamp ass

made some more progress last weekend.- got the wipers wired up and working (prev owner removed all the wiring for some reason)- alternator exciter is now hooked up properly. the circuit runs through the dummy light on the cluster, which i removed- adjusted afterstart and warmup enrichment. it starts in the cold now. still needs some work, but it is better- redid the intake tubing. replaced the piece i had with a longer oem piece, which i can only assume was from a passat 16v i parted a while backi also picked up a 79 scirocco without engine or trans. it was cheap and a pretty good shell. still havent decided what direction i will go, but i am considering a 1.6 diesel.. pics here:jetta - http://tinyurl.com/yjwb8sq (lots of random)rocco - http://tinyurl.com/yz8sguo (from previous owners)

also put an exhaust on there a couple weeks back.. pulled part of it back out tonight and welded in a flex piece.

started collecting parts to build the spare engine. decided to go n/a with it, shooting for 200+whp. the 400 i wanted with the turbo is too much for a 2000# fwd car.from my post on the local vw board (lazy). the 9a is the 2.0 16v from the late 80s/early 90s
4/14/2010 1:06:40 PM
1. there is no such thing as too much hp.2. aren't you affiliated with a shop?
4/14/2010 9:33:25 PM
^yes there is, and yes.
4/14/2010 11:27:22 PM
why on earth would a shop use mega squirt ?I know its not a bad ecu but its also not professional nor anywhere near as good as a stand alone.I dunno if i saw a shop car roll up with a resistor bank hanging out i'd chuckle. And yes 400whp is scary on a fwd dd... that being said.. you don't have to use it all the time and now it sounds there is a 400whp turbo set up for 200whp ? that sounds like needless lag and its an old style bushing turbo... Not trying to be a jerk just asking questions.good luck with the project i hope it comes out well.
4/14/2010 11:48:58 PM
its my personal project. i'm using megasquirt because it is cheap and it is capable. not sure what you're mean about a resistor bank or "nor anywhere near as good as a stand alone". name one function that a "stand alone" can do that megasquirt can't. what does that even mean "stand alone"i had not decided on which turbo, but there was another car i found that made 400+whp on a turbo setup similar to the one i had planned. i had a t3/t4 but sold it because i wanted ball bearing. the car is pretty much going to be the one i can take to an autox or track so less expensive and less parts is a good thing. i was planning on building the engine anyway, but i sold the low CR JEs i had, and i am ordering the wisecos soon.edit:also, for the 2.0 16v (in the vw world), megasquirt is a very popular option for efi (came with bosch cis mechanical fuel injection). it makes finding base maps and discussing settings easy among other enthusiasts with similar projects. Megasquirt is modeled on the speed density GM EFI of the 80s, stuff you'd see on the V8's and on the turbo Sunbird and Syclone/Typhoon. That's why fuel is controlled by a volumetric efficiency table--this control strategy is mostly used by GM. A lot of other standalones have you directly mapping injector pulsewidth to manifold pressure (like AEM EMS).Most of the Megasquirts are pretty simple, using batch fired injectors and a really basic crank trigger wheel (sometimes stock, sometimes a swapped in Ford EDIS 36-1 trigger wheel etc). I know the latest Megasquirt III's have finally begun to catch up to the more expensive competition (Haltech, AEM EMS, etc) with sequential injection, individual direct fire ignition (coil-on-plug etc), and support for a bunch of different types of crank and cam triggers. The maps still aren't very high resolution though--a Haltech Platinum has 32x32 for example.I had a Megasquirt'n'Spark extra about 4 years ago. The main problem I had with it was sensitivity to electrical noise. The factory computer had much better filtering for my Rx-7's crank angle sensor signal (which was a typical 80s optical sensor). If beethead can find good information on then it makes sense he would use it. It's hard to use something with little support. FYI, a lot of standalones don't have peak-and-hold injector drivers built in so you have to run resistors for low impedence injectors. There's nothing really wrong with that, a lot of cars came that way from the factory and you still get the benefit of the lower injector lag times that the low impedence injectors provide.
4/15/2010 2:19:44 PM
you can use all types of crank signals. i'm using the factory hall sender. it may take a little modification, but it is all in the megamanual.truthfully i just wanted to try MS out. i was planning on switching over to DTA or haltech or something down the road, but i really just wanted to get the car running and drivable on a budget. i lost motivation in the project a while back, and kicked around the idea of selling it all off. that all went out the window the first time i drove it.[Edited on April 15, 2010 at 2:58 PM. I've got 4 power resistors hacked into my harness for my dsm injectors.
4/15/2010 3:13:49 PM
300whp+ fwd cars are fun, but just useless below top of 3rd/4th, well at least my buds honduhs
4/15/2010 4:25:53 PM
It's funny on the highway. I would prefer a 200WHP NA build as well.
4/15/2010 6:17:28 PM
arghx pretty much summed it up for me its not bad and much better than fmu setups and ihmo better than piggy backs too.. but still seems a little rigged for a shop car ihmo.
4/15/2010 7:13:16 PM
IT IS NOT A SHOP CARit is my personal project. i'm not fucking rich, so there is a budget involved.
4/15/2010 7:16:05 PM
some quick pics of my unprofessional pile of shitgonna assemble the head when the valve springs get herewhen the pistons come in the bottom end will be off to the machine shopafter the longblock is assembled i'm pulling the drivetrain and trying to figure out the clicking in the trans. then it all goes back together and back in the car.i don't really have a schedule, and i will only be working on it when i can find time, but i'd like to drive it before the end of the summer.[Edited on April 15, 2010 at 11:37 PM. looks pretty. What have you got planned for the bottom end? when you are done you and slut should meet for a my 2.0t powered old vw is faster than yours festival.

no turbo. i think i said that right up there.

NAis best.

come on beethead, don't you know that any and all vehicles built by someone that owns or even works at a shop are $50k+ works of art?? that's what magazines and the internet tell me and sumfoo1, anyway... get it together, man.[Edited on April 19, 2010 at 11:46 PM. I'll give you like $1800 when you finish this car and get tired of it. That's my way of saying it's looking good.

which ms are you using? i didn't know they had 3 out with sequential efi working and a lot faster processing. i wonder if they will ever make the resolution higher on the efi and the timing tables.
4/20/2010 9:01:55 PM
some quick picsautotech springssupertech retainrsi have MS1 with the MSnS extra firmwarethe map is 12x12i dont need sequential injection or anything fancy, this works.[Edited on April 20, 2010 at 11:13 PM. Reason : fucking image tags]

4/21/2010 12:26:37 AM
How high will this engine be revving? What kind of cams are planned? Do you think you'll be putting out over 200whp NA (Obviously this depends on the dyno and stuff, but just ballpark estimate would be fine)? Are you going for nice mid-range and top-end power or are you after peak numbers? (Note: You don't seem like the type to be after peak numbers at the expense of mid-range, but I just wondered.)What compression ratio are you thinking you'll run? ]
4/21/2010 8:37:22 AM
redline will be around 8ki'm leaning towards techtonics 268/276 cams200whp na is about what i was shooting fori'm looking for good mid and top end power. peak numbers dont mean much.pistons are wiseco 11:1
4/21/2010 8:53:24 AM
That's going to be one hell of a car IMO. I'll be interested to see how it turns out because I'd imagine it's going to be really fun. I would think it will be able to put that kind of power down pretty well. Obviously peak numbers are worthless, especially if you have no midrange, since you drop back down there after each shift and spend a ton of time there when on the track or doing auto-x (Like I said, I just wondered). It should sound pretty sick too.
4/21/2010 9:18:39 AM
it's already fun as hell with a used, bone-stock engine. everyone that drives it comes back laughing.i kinda need to go through the exhaust again. it is a 4-1 race header (techtonics tuning) and piping back to a resonator that i pulled out of a mk4 gti (maximadriver's manual trans swap donor car). it is a little raspy when you get on it, but it is quieter than it was before. thrown together, but mostly just to avoid getting pulled over for running an open header [Edited on April 21, 2010 at 9:45 AM. Reason : .]
4/21/2010 9:44:47 AM
Haha, yeah open header sounds insane, but it's stupidly loud in the car. Keep the resonator and sidepipe dat beast son! ]
4/21/2010 9:49:37 AM
cam followers should show up today. then i can finish assembling the head (installing stock cam for now).pistons have been ordered. as soon as they show up, the bottom end will be off to the machine shop.
4/21/2010 10:06:03 AM
how much do the old jettas weigh? are they in the sub 2000lb range like some of the other old vws?
4/21/2010 10:14:03 AM
it should be somewhere around 2100# from the factory. this one is probably right around 2k with driver.
4/21/2010 10:20:37 AM
pistons showed up today.head is assembled and the bottom end is off to the machine shop...also did some datalogging yesterday and messed with some of the warmup settings.
4/28/2010 11:38:08 AM
what p2w do you run on a NA build?also how high will it rev?
4/28/2010 11:39:54 AM
should rev to ~8kguessing 200-225 whp when it is all finished..
4/28/2010 12:19:23 PM
sorry, p2w = piston to wall clearance.
