yeah 440 is more like an upside-down U

40 is like I HAVE AUTHORITY HERE and totally overwrote exit 17, 18, etc.

not a true loop, ie other real cities

OH SNAP

3-digit derivatives of interstates do not have to be full loops

1xx, 3xx, 5xx, 7xx would only have to be spurs

2xx, 4xx, 6xx, 8xx don't have to be full loops, just return to parent highway.

i know a thing or two about roads.

If you were coming from Raleigh its beyond me why anyone would fly instead of drive. Its a 4 hour drive. Between driving to the airport, giving yourself enough of a time cushion to show up for your flight, your actual flight, and then getting picked up at the airport or getting a rental car you easily use more than 4 hours.

But I totally agree, the beltlines around DC are confusing as fuck.

^^ not only that, but it's the all of the regular streets inside the belt lines. I kept getting lost with a few of the streets turning into tunnels for 3 blocks then turning back into regular streets. Well technically I wasn't lost, I could see washington tower and used it as my guide, but still... I kept going back and forth on the middle streets near the mall to find the convention center and it's like 3 blocks big...

I am always amazed by the number of people who have driven those roads for 1-5 years and still can't comprehend "inner" and "outer"

I definitely understand why it confuses new people because "inner" raleigh doesnt mean anything to you.

I have given simplified explanations/drawings to ~20 people who all got it immediately within 30 seconds of an explanation that never understood it during the time they drove on it.

I dont have a lot of confidence in the human race. It seems like they could name it "addition" and "subtraction" and get better results. If you get on addition the numbers go up, subtraction the numbers go down.

attn yankees

you want to move here so deal with it. we didn't ask you to move here, hell we don't want anymore of you here. but be it as it is, you must live with the beltline as it is. Our roads don't go E-W and N-S. They change names on you and curve all over the place.

summary: if you don't like it you can giiiiiiiit out

^^Yankees? I thought the problem would have been better addressed by keeping things the way they are and throwing up a few "State Fair This Way ⇒" signs. Maybe include a sign that is nothing but pictures if they really want to cover all their bases.

This is retarted the inner/outer beltline is not that fucking hard to figure out. I learned in 1st grade what clockwise/counter-clockwise meant. Since age 3 i have had the realization that people in the US drive on the right. Put 1+1 together and BAM you can figure out the 440.

North 440 can mean two totally different things. You are leaving 40 east cruising past New Bern Ave or you are coming up US1 and heading toward Wade Ave.

Good thing the dumbasses in Raleigh crying over their lack of IQ to figure out the beltlines don't actually live in Norfolk. I think I even need a cartographer to figure out their I64, I264, I564, and I664

I've never had trouble visualizing whether I was on inner vs. outer I-440 or where I was headed, but if you aren't from here I could possibly see where the confusion might arise.

If someone can't figure out inner/outer or the cardinal direction for which way they want to go they are a fucking moron and deserve to get lost. It's simple visualization and renaming the signs won't make people any smarter.

Even Google Maps is a little confused. For the hell of it, I got directions to Crabtree Valley from Knightdale.

After my sophmore year in which my friend gave me poor directions to RDU (was told exit after crabtree when it is really 3 exits before); having done a lap on the outer beltline than a lap on the inner I never got lost again.

CW and CCW make the most sense, and besides, if you get going the wrong way... well it IS a loop or you could always turn around.

Now I want to know why you can only get on/off Melbourne Road one way...
Who builds an intersection with half the on/off ramps?

I had the beltline figured out within 1 day of moving here. If you cant figure it out, you're too fucking stupid to be driving.

Period.

It should be named East and West, it's a loop of I-40, even number interstates are always East to West. It makes zero sense to have them labeled North and South. Inner and Outer is fine as well, just designate them as East and West, not North and South.

^ I think you overestimate the idiots

Rename it "I440 - Counterclockwise" and I swear to God you'll end up with idiots finding themselves driving on the wrong side of the road.
