I think the best concept I have seen come out recently is Powerset http://www.powerset.comThey were aquired by microsoft in August, and I had previously signed up as part of their labs beta...They are trying to allow you to actually type in a sentence and come back with a result that answers your question ... more AI oriented approach it seems.

In beta, yes its a wikipedia search engine ... But the technology powering the search is what is so good, not really the current "breadth" of its search ability.There is a reason MS paid an assload for it.
