God this thread shows why I hate our country and our two-party system so much....Some of you are so dedicated to your party that you like it when an opposing party member dies? That is pretty damn harsh.

He just said they died on the same day. He didn't say his accomplishments match them, which is obvious.
7/5/2008 12:55:55 AM
I just watched the miniseries. john adams didnt do shit
7/5/2008 12:58:19 AM
Yeah, preventing a popular but disastrous war with France? Pshaw. We all know great presidents go to war and to hell with the consequences...
7/5/2008 1:31:21 AM
I think Jesse Helms -- or his family -- caused him to die on July 4th with intentional planning.he had been on his deathbed for some time.they pulled his lifesupport at 12:01 am. he was pronounced dead at ~1:30 amthink about it.
7/5/2008 3:29:32 AM
Good riddance. Klansmen do their shit in private, Jesse did it in public. I'm a Republican, and even I can recognize he was nothing but a bigot representing bigots. Conservatism is one thing, but his actions were in most cases nothing but hatred and spitefulness. I can't believe that there are politicians stupid enough to actually want to be photographed with him.
7/5/2008 12:13:36 PM
Helms was not a bad guy.I despise his politics and a lot of things he said and stood for...BUT... he also did a lot of good. Nobody from that generation who took up politics and was in public service for that long has a squeaky-clean record. People do and say bad things and the bad things always seem to cast a shadow over any good. Doesn't automatically make them bad people.
7/5/2008 2:20:32 PM
To the above commenter on "these people are usually miserable" -- well, aside from the supreme ignorance of your statement -- what misery "these people" endure is largely attributable to the likes of Jesse Helms and, most importantly, the people who voted him into office term after term. And on that note I will say that I don't wish any particular ill on him or his family (and never have). He was a man doing his job, if zealously. His job was to represent the people of North Carolina; and that he was regarded as having done it particularly well, does not say much good for the state.NC has a long history of bad policy that pre-dates Jesse Helms by many years. When the state stops acting like a backwater, it will stop being one.

7/9/2008 4:26:06 PM
Don't you think if Helms was as big a racist as some of you are making him out to be, he would've joined the Klan? I just don't get how Byrd gets a free pass because he says he was sorry. He also said "I shall never fight in the armed forces with a Negro by my side... Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds."Helms certainly wasn't a saint, but I always get a kick out of how some people will defend Byrd because he said he was sorry, and jump all over someone like Helms for being a racistIt seems to me that if you're in the KKK, or another similar organization, you can't exactly just apologize and be forgiven...its kind of a serious thing when you are a member of the Klan...believe it or not, its actually worse than being a politician

You don't vote anyway, so what's the problem?
7/9/2008 5:08:03 PM
You aren't eligible to vote in West Virginia yourself, therefore you're not allowed to mention Byrd's name...brilliant logic as usualBtw it sure is convenient that your first post in this 2 page thread is trolling me...what a surprise]
7/9/2008 5:10:56 PM
Even if I were trolling you, you'd deserve it 100% and you fucking know it.You said "politicians"I said "you don't vote"You mention I can't vote in WVa, then question my logic?Seriously? When you are this completely fucked in the head, it should be free game to clown you at any and every opportunity. The funny thing is, you've never attempted to reply to Smoker4 even though his politics aren't in line with yours. Is it because you know he'll rip any argument comment you make to shreds? You're entire posting method relies on this type of faggotry
7/9/2008 5:36:26 PM
you go from whining about me making a post that addressed a point, and then talked shit about you...calling for my suspension, as usualthen you come with this last post, which has nothing to do with making any points, and is strictly personal attacksi guess this is your way of asking to be suspended yourself? still clueless after 6 aliases, wow, thats sad
7/9/2008 5:40:50 PM
I don't have to make any more points when you can't even see that Skank destroyed your argument before you made it. All I can do is attempt to split it all up and quote and bold shit for you hoping that maybe you'll get it. The point is you didn't make a point. You could attempt a rebuttal or a clarification or another example or anything other than getting dominated and then being a nuisance, but why would you actually do that, it wouldn't be very TreeTwista-like. It's just easier to claim I'm trolling you and try to get under my skin.
7/9/2008 5:45:41 PM
i'll let Skank respond to my post if he wants to, I don't think he needs you to speak on his behalfof course I doubt he'll do that since this thread went to shit as soon as you started trolling me
7/9/2008 5:49:03 PM
for every ted kennedy and john edwards in the senate, there needs to be a jesse helms

7/9/2008 6:40:37 PM
dont put this on me...i was responding legitimately to skankin before the perpetual bald troll came in and started obsessing over every word i typed
7/9/2008 7:10:22 PM
I'm surprised it took until page 2 to for Byrd to pop up

Yes, the man didn't stray from the course his whole life - he was a tried and true racist.
7/10/2008 1:11:51 PM
hahaha, just saw this threadwe definitely threw party/bbq for 4th of July, but we changed the party to a DING DONG THE WITCH IS DEAD, JESSE HELMS WAS FINALLY MURDERED BY GOD party. It was much fun
7/10/2008 1:12:41 PM
^^like i mentioned earlier, maybe i'm just skeptical of a politician giving an apologyi'm by no means at all trying to defend Helms...i just don't see why people view him and Byrd in significantly different ways...because he said he was sorry?]
7/10/2008 1:14:13 PM
It has nothing to do with what he's said, it's a result of his actions over the past 20 years. I could give a flip if he said 'sorry' and continued the same behaviors, but this is not the case for Byrd.Helms did not apologize and he did not change his actions therefore it is a completely different case.
7/10/2008 1:17:17 PM
Lets get to the bottom of this:
7/10/2008 1:29:15 PM
Why don't you tell me how my reasoning is wrong instead of turning it into a partisan issue?Helm's was DEFINED by his racism. Byrd refused to let it define him and has worked to get past it.
7/10/2008 1:32:00 PM
Byrd was filibustering civil rights legislation 25 years after he left the Klan...just 7 years ago he used the term "white nigger" twice on national TV...how much changing has he really done?I personally think Helms and Byrd are both racist pieces of shit...Helms is just more familiar to (most of) us since we (most of us) grew up in North Carolina and not West Virginia]
7/10/2008 1:33:46 PM
I wouldn't go as far as to call Helms a piece of shit. Had it not been for Helms in 1976 delivering NC to Reagan, we may have very well never gotten the 8 years of Ronald Reagan.I could also raise his abundance of conservative issues that he was a champion over. Was he perfect? Far from it. I will not deride the man for his past. It's a part of his record. It always will be. I'm not trying to whitewash it, but I certainly understand the conservative values he pushed for many many years. He was one of the lions of his generation to usher in Ronald Reagan, Newt Gingrich, etc.[Edited on July 10, 2008 at 2:03 PM. Reason : .]
