The assholes who get pissed off at cars can suck a dick

the assholes on bikes who run red lights can suck a dick

It is extremely simple to share the road

If people obeyed the laws and didn't get self-righteous about shit a lot of these problems would be solved.

NPR did a special on those guys. They rode out on the interstate the other day. One of them is going to get smashed. One of them is going to die. Then they'll bitch about it. I'll find it hard to be sympathetic.

I'm going to agree with BBR on this. The recreational bicyclist using rural highways contribute nothing but endangerment to themselves and motorist. I can't tell you how many times I come up on packs of riders that do nothing but back up traffic for miles and create an unsafe environment for drivers, especially in Chatham county. Looks like she had it coming to her.

You guys should just be glad the bicycle laws aren't like they are in Japan.

Japanese laws says that the bike ALWAYS has the right of way. Doesn't matter if the bicyclist is being an asshole and breaking the law, the car is still 100% at fault.

Current bicycle traffic laws were written back when bikes were actually used for transportation. Recreational bikes aren't used for transportation. The dead giveaway is the $100 spandex. I say they're not entitled to the right of way and the law should be changed accordingly.

I go out of my way to give people in street/work clothes on bicycles the right of way.

Did you ever consider they wear the biking clothes during the commute and change into work clothes at work? I personally am not going to getting sweaty and nasty in a suit just so someone can determine if I'm a worker bee or recreational bee.

I had to laugh at the ones that were crying. I give cyclists plenty of room when I can but I guess I'm lucky that where I live I don't see many and the ones I do see travel as far to the right as possible. I have an issue with runners and walkers right in the fucking road, not far right but 4 or 5 feet into the lane.

I still go way around and I never let them know what kind a assholes they are. If I did I just figure it would make them happy and they'd do it more. I know they love it when cars get pissed that's the whole reason why they do it, if they didn't they'd do what made sense and stay safely on the sidewalk or to the right.

haha the critical mass people piss me off. Even though i have a bike rack and bike on my civic half the time i still honk at them when a bunch of them run red lights and hold up cars with green lights. They can't do that shit if they expect ANYONE to take them serviously.

Quote :
"No, no it doesn't. Comparing the number of miles a bicycle traveled to a car is ridiculous."

lol thought this was funny. My dad who is 56 and a bunch of his friends put about 13-14k on thier bikes each year which is about the national average for cars and he has a 9-5 deskjob during the day.

Quote :
"If she wanted to exercise, she should go to a gym. That's not what roads are for. "

You'd be amazed at how far some people drive to go to the gym. I would say most bikers who use the roads to exercise don't use a car at all to get there, and ride from home. On the other hand most people who go to a gym drive a ways to get to the gym. So driving single occupancy in a big car to go to a gym 10 miles away is silly compared to not using a car and cycling around your neighborhood. So IMHO i would think letting cyclists exercise on the road (however annoying it may be) is still better than forcing everyone to drive to a gym to spin in front of a mirror.

Quote :
"designated bike lanes that were a good 3-4 ft wide. im all for it if they have there own lane.
"

Yeah we do need more bike lanes. I think there's some new policy in the last 10 years in Charlotte saying all new major roads that fit certain conditions are required to have bike lanes on both sides of the road. I can't remember specifically though.

Quote :
""But bicyclists don't pay taxes to maintain the roads. Recreational bicyclists are using the road for recreation, not commerce or transportation, therefore they are, and should be, at the bottom of the asphalt food chain. ""

But that's only because most people in America think cars are the end all/most godly/most manly form of transport. Bikes are much more efficient and actually get you in shape so why should cars have the right of way? Obviously our infrastructure isn't set up for this to be the case and cars are just so much easier to get around with so bikes are still hard to use as a main form of transportation.

Although i think this doesn't apply to all places in the US. For example in Boulder 95% of all roads have some form of bike lane, 15% of citizens commute to work by bike, and 25% of all the transportation budget goes to bikes (and guess what, they're not taxed). So that's free shit for the bikers. San Fran, Portland, and many other cities are incredibly bike friendly and a bunch of the cities budget goes into infrastructure for the cyclists, and they don't complain about not taxing the users.

I agree bikes should possibly get licensed and maybe even taxed, but i'm not sure it would even work. I mean look at the countries with more successful bike systems like Holland, Switzerland, Norway, and much of the east. Do they tax bike users?

Here's an older article:

http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/english/doc/2005-01/26/content_412346.htm

Seemed like it took too much effect, was a waste of money, and no one did it. What are they going to pull over cyclists to check and make sure they have a registration and pay taxes? Lol. It just seems to me like the most successful bike friendly countries don't have any kind of tax, so why should we? I know our transportation system is very different, but that's still no excuse.

Haha, a bike lift in Norway, pretty neat:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7j1PgmMbug8

V .. yeah the place i intern at has showers for that very purpose. If you're actually biking to work you don't bike in your work clothes in 95 degree weather. you wear cycling clothes, then shower and change at work.

I don't care where you exercise, or how much gas you use doing it.

What I do know is that public roads are not the place for leisure exercise, when doing so obviously disrupts their purpose(the efficient movement of commercial goods and individuals).

^As long as the ride single file on multi-lane highways, I have no problem with that. If they regularly have 100 cars waiting behind them just so they can get a little burn on during their commute, they should do something else.

^exactly. Myrtle beach strip? (hate it). Blue Ridge Parkway? (love it) but both are basically used for leisure driving/motorcycling.

Yeah most of the big companies in Charlotte have bike teams and many of them organize and bike to work.

Quote :

That's stupid. People should be able to use the roads to work out on. Driving 10 miles to go to a gym just to ride on a fake bike is stupid if you can just ride around your neighborhood, not waste gas, and not add another car to the road.

I agree. If it comes down to it, commercial trucks and traffic should have priority. Bike(motorcycle) week in Myrtle Beach is a perfect example, the whole damn city grinds to a halt. I'm sure the locals hate it.

But motorcycles and sports cars typically don't disrupt the flow of traffic, they get the fuck on out of the way.

bottom line is that bikes, by law, have the same rights to the roads as cars (not including highways of course). yes, it may cause inconveniences, but that's life. suck it up, or push for changes in the law.

if you cause furthur problems by aggravating or assualting bikers, then you're more a problem than the bikers.

Tax? I just want them to stay out of my way.

I've used a bike for my commute many times in my life, and I never inconvenienced a single driver(rode on sidewalks, stuck to the curb, pulled over to let traffic pass, didn't weave in traffic, etc) I don't see why these exercise pack riders can't give me the same courtesy.

But that's giving everyone the impression cars are the ultimate form of transport. As i've shown with the Amsterdam video, and examples around the world, cars are what everyone needs to be moving AWAY from, not supporting. Bikes should be given more rights and cars should get more restrictions. It's not just about ease and power. It's also about healthy living, intelligent city planning, and not being fat-ass americans driving suburbans everywhere.

^that's incorrect. It's actually been proven to be safer for bikes to ride on the road than on the sidewalk. I thought that was common knowledge.

first link i found:
http://www.magma.ca/~ocbc/aultman.html
Quote :
"For falls and injuries, the lowest rates were recorded on road, followed by paths/trails. Sidewalk cycling had the highest rates. There was no significant differences for collisions on sidewalks in Ottawa but were higher on sidewalks and paths in Toronto. For Ottawa, both the fall rate and injury rate on sidewalks were four times higher than on roads. In Toronto, 9 and 6.4 times higher respectively. "

"1. Avoid Riding On Sidewalks. Many people think that the sidewalk is a safe place to ride. However, accident studies show that riding on sidewalks has about twice the accident risk as proper cycling on the road. Sidewalk cyclists are in danger at every road crossing and even driveways because motorists do not look for fast traffic on the sidewalk. Also, mixing pedestrians and cyclists is dangerous to both. A bicycle “sidepath” next to a road is just about as dangerous as a sidewalk. This is why cyclists are often required to walk bikes across intersections. (Note the sign in the photo to the right.) You are much safer in the street, following the rules of the road for drivers of vehicles."

oh fuck me, here's neodata again telling us how great every other city in the world is. i hope you have that post saved or something, and don't waste the time typing it every time one of these threads happens. let me tell you again you ignoramus, large cities in the south ARE NOT COMPARABLE to the places you keep babbling about. it's useless to try and model this area after them. apples to oranges! maybe we could implement a COUPLE of ideas here and there in an alternate execution, but we can't just plop gaycyclelove, eu down as a template.

tell you what, if i get you a peddle boat from pullen park will you take off across the atlantic to your promised land? take one of these other head in the clouds people with you. spandex must restrict the flow of blood to the brain. if this place sucks so much, gtfo. you're just the kind of self important ass that whines about everything, but does jack shit to work for a reasonable plan. it's fine, you just keep riding your bike around like a good boy, and the grown ups will call you in for dinner after some legitimate solutions and ideas get done.

btw, i'm willing to bet some of these grand places implement some of the things i've typed about over and over in this thread.
