I don't mind it if I have something to read, or occasionally if something interesting is on the TV at the bar. If I don't have anything other than the food to take up my attention, I end up getting fidgety and eat way too fast.

Seems it'd be weird to eat alone at a nice/fancy place though.

At lunch I do it at restaurants pretty often (I prefer to sit at a bar area if possible).

If i'm out of town on business/or in route to somewhere for pleasure then I will do it for lunch or dinner (again I prefer to sit at a bar area). In these circumstances I tend to seek out places that I know will clearly have a bar area.

I have sat at a table alone a couple of times at very nice places (75+) while I am out of town. However, it has been times that I have been well dressed and its clear you're there on business.

I went to eat at Charley's subs today by myself before class... and then I saw this smokin hot blonde walk in, I was waiting for somebody else to walk in with her... and nobody came! And if that weren't enough 5 mins later some other hot chick came in and ate by herself.

I have no shame in eating by myself now... even though it was only us three and some old guy there.

Haven't read anything but the initial post...so here are my thoughts.

Its okay to eat by yourself at a table:

Fast food restaurants for any meal
Restaurants other than really expensive/fancy ones for lunch

Its okay to eat by yourself at a nice/expensive/fancy restaurant for dinner if you eat at the bar.

Those are clear, bright-line rules.

Well if you don't care about what other people think, then the rules don't apply. But if you do...those are the rules.

Personally...I don't want to take up a two-seater table at a nice restaurant when a couple could be sitting there. I'm very "restaurant-conscious" and want servers to get as much as possible. Even though I tip well and drink a decent amount, they're still going to get more money from a two-top rather than just me sitting there and getting dinner. That's why I say go sit at the bar if you're at a decent/nice place.

For lunch it doesn't matter. Most places don't usually kill it for lunch...and those that do are use to having "singles" anyway.

thats true. but a table is a table and maybe people don't wanna sit in a bar??? i just don't see my dad out of town on business trips sitting in bar areas alone...that is more what i was thinking. he'd probably just sit in the normal restaurant part.
