The ceremony pictures are up at http://www.seemygraduate.com
If anyone forgot to give the photographer the sheet with their email on it, the pictures are probably still up there, you just have to guess your password.

It's like:
ENHQxy where x is N or Q or T or W (or other letters above or below in 4 letter increments) and y is A-Z

example: ENHQTN

haha, hell no.

I'm actually listening to the Grateful Dead at this very moment.

My [fellow jarhead] roommate and I had a conversation yesterday about how we don't care about gay marriage, and for that matter polygamy, and how marriage should really just be a religious and social institution--only minimally dealt with in legal terms. We also were talking about how it'd be fine with us if pot got legalized (though we both would want it slapped with a "sin tax").

Of course, this conversation was at the gym, between sets of 8-count bodybuilders, bicep/tricep, and ab work...so we're still full-blooded Marine, too.

yeah the military isn't as conservative as most people think, especially enlisted

I went to MEPS today and got my papers stamped fifty billion times. The govt sure does love stamps. I got rejected because I can't smell But the head doc "strongly recommended" a waiver! Shoot they give waivers to felons and people with bad backs, I think I'll be alright. Also because of my bad sniffer I can't serve on a boat (who would want to smell a boat anyway?? )

My heart rate was 64! not bad. it was in the 75 range a few weeks ago

i'm not saying to hide medical problems and lie about them

but don't go trying to dig things up

unless you no-kidding don't have a sense of smell or something, i wouldn't really jump at the chance to point out that my sense of smell is somewhat less acute than a bloodhound's.

i never remember being given any sort of olfactory test in any of the many batteries of tests i've gone through in the military.

and yeah, across enlisted and officer ranks, i think you'll find that the military is not as conservative as many think. yes, the military tends to vote republican, but there are a LOT of moderate, libertarian-leaning Republicans included in that. Goldwater (a retired General) and McCain (a retired O-6 Captain) Republicans.

^^^, ^I was kidding. Of course we're not all straight-laced Hell, half the fun of being in the military is seeing how much from the norm you can deviate.
And Duke, I've come to see a lot of sense in the libertarian-leaning policies and thought of Goldwater, so I definitely second the non-conservatism.

^^Yea, you should be able to be waived for that. I'm flat footed (quite severely), but that's not a problem in the Navy.

And she really can't smell.

And second the got hot - you'll make the uniform look good, Britta. hehe

yeah, it's funny. i don't tolerate rules and regs well at all anywhere except in the military. i have always tended to color outside the lines a good bit...but for some reason, the comparatively strict structure of the military (especially the USMC) has never really rubbed me the wrong way.

i've noticed a number of other people who i can tell are pretty much the same way.

chembob is correct! I can't smell anything. The medical word is anosmia. Most people have never heard of this so they are always curious. I often get the dreaded list - "So you can't smell pizza? coffee? oranges?" No, I can't smell anything! It's like asking a blind person "So you can't see bicycles? teapots? lampshades?"

Also there's a straight up question on the medical form "absence or disturbance of sense of smell." In fact I did some e-research and came up with a guy who got a fraudulent enlistment charge for failing to report that he had anosmia. Don't want to take any chances there! And my medical history is littered with incriminating documentation.

I like being different - female in engineering, female in the military, vegan in the South, etc. But at the same time I'm a big fan of rules. what's up with that

^^^^ yeah, in that situation, you were right to 'fess up.

if it was "yeah, other people always seem to have a more keen sense of smell than i do", you wouldn't want to trump up medical "charges" against yourself.

being no-kidding unable to smell is different.

^^ no, but it makes me question your judgement! in addition to making great pets, animals are delicious and nutritious!

it's probably easier to be vegan if you've never truly tasted a steak

that's assuming the no sense of smell thing affects her sense of taste

which it must

Ugh, MEPS. Was this the one in Raleigh? It was my first experience and foreshadow to the infamous "Hurry up and wait". Good thing you wouldn't see combat directly, it's all hurry up and wait for something. Don't worry about the waiver thing, they even have ASVAB waivers! I'd be more worried about less than qualified people than people who can't smell. Not like you could smell radiation anyways.

it's a physical limitation of her body. she can't be held responsible for her veganry.

I dated a vegetarian once. It was awesome...we'd go to dinner, and I'd eat all of the meat in our entrees--she'd eat most of the vegetables and stuff and be happy.

so, ALkatraz, what can you do to enlighten TWW on the complexities of soil

^ nah I can understand. they have to process like 80 people a day, every day! I actually thought they were pretty friendly considering their job. as long as you're sitting in the right chair you won't get scolded

Well, the bible says that the wise man builds his house on rock and the foolish man builds his house on sand. I say that the wise man builds his house on rock or sand and a foolish man builds his house on unconsolidated highly plastic clay.

If it wasn't for the water in soil, there would be no need for geotechnical engineers.

You can do a Mohr's circle on soil but you can never have it in tension.

We usually classify soils as by decreasing size Gravels -> Sands -> Silts. Silts can be considered very small sand. Silt and Clay are both small particles. We're talking about less than 1/200th of an inch per particle(like Dust). Clays are chemically active silts are not.

Clay particles can't exist alone in nature, they are always bonded together.

Clay particles can never fully dry out. They have a double diffused layer of water around them that behaves like ice.

Some clays can hold up to 2 times their own weight in water.

Anything else?

how can I test for plasticity in the soil around my home?

Easy!

You only need to know to things. The Liquid limit and the Plastic

1. Get a representative sample of soil and weigh it. (a small shovel full should be adequate)
2. Sieve it out.http://www.retsch.com/uploads/sl/6734add7c6dd224923810a10e526ddae.jpg
3. Weigh out how much made it through the #200 sieve(200 openings per linear inch).
4. If the weight of the amount that passed through the #200 is less than 1/2 of the total weight you put in there, you have a granular soil (sand/gravel) and it can't be plastic.

If that isn't the case you have to perform the plasticity tests.
5. Get a small amount of soil. Handful or so. Weigh it.
6. Try to roll the soil into 1/8 diameter threads on a table.
7. If they get to 1/8 inch or so in diameter and start to crack and fall apart GOOD! You wanna weigh those threads, dry them out completely and then weigh them again. The total water loss divided by the weight of the dry soil is the water content at the plastic limit.
8. If they crack before you get to 1/8 of an inch, add some distilled water until you can complete #7.
9. If they aren't cracking at 1/8 of an inch, keep rolling out the soil into threads to dry it out until you can complete #7.
10. Take some more soil from sample different from the soil in #5.
11. Mix some soil and a little bit of water and spread it in a liquid limit cup. http://www.wku.edu/~matthew.dettman/matt/prof/ce410/LLplacesoil.jpg
12.Then make a groove: http://www.wku.edu/~matthew.dettman/matt/prof/ce410/LLgroove.jpg
13. Count the number of turns of the crank until the grove closes and is about 1/4" long.
14. Take a sample of from the cup and weigh it, dry it, weigh it again.
15. If the number of turns was under 25, add more water to the soil and do the test again.
16. Repeat the test until you have 3 points, at least one below or above 25.
17. Graph the water content(weight of water/weight of soil) of the samples on a log graph with the number of turns on the bottom and the water content on the left.
18. The water content at 25 drops is the liquid limit.

The plasticity index(PI) is the Liquid limit minus the Plastic limit. PI=LL-PL

Find your soil on this graph:

Clays are above, silts below, anything with an H is high plastic.
