in my experience, in asian countries it varies HUGE between the big cities and rural ares (speaking of China and Japan here mainly from what I know, I dont know as much personally about the other counrties). Their big cities are on par with ours (hard to compare 1 to 1, but in general considering a different culture id say they are pretty much equal). But our rural areas are much farther advanced as far as living rather comfortably and with similar/same amenities as our big cities. Same goes for a lot of the middle eastern areas with extravagant big cities and extreme poverty everywhere else in the country.Id say most of the "major" countries on Europe are pretty on par with us too. Thinking about it more, it is hard to compare and say we are "#1" but we're definitely in the very top tier, and certainly not behind anyone which is the most important.

yeah i think it is really hard to definitively argue that european major cities are backwards to US major cities. While paris may not have A/C in every building or have as much "modern" computing technology; I can pretty much walk into a clinic to receive treatment if i break my arm (not that i agree with universal health care) or get to any other urban city without using a car or incurring any major cost.

Screw all the materialistic BS in America, I wanna go somewhere that improves intellectual pursuits and adds to the global discourse. I honestly wish I could get out of here, but I don't know anybody in Europe. All of my connections are out here. And I am out of cash. And I don't have a job. And America is in a recession.

I love America but I have to say that in my travel Switzerland is comparable. It was actually amazing to me to cross the border from Germany and see such a difference. The rest of Western Europe is great if you are completely loaded as you could buy American style living in cities with a great urban core. However, if you have to work for a living things are not nearly as good. One amazing thing about Europe, which probably tilts some academics, journalists, etc, is that being smart in Europe is like being rich in the US in terms of social admiration. Particularly in Germany and Eastern Europe where it seemed that being an intellectual was like being a pro athlete.

^^That's what I want.I grew up in Prince George's County, Maryland (The new host site for MS-13) where it was all about brawn over brains. Then I moved to fucking Wake County, North Carolina where it's all about superficiality over brains. And college was disappointingly an extension of that.Fuck it, I'm just an angry person. I'll complain about anything.[Edited on May 8, 2008 at 3:25 PM. Reason : I need to learn to type faster]

^ If liberals had their way; americans would not have to work hard. We could sit on the couch getting free healthcare, as much food stamps as we want, a welfare check in the mail every week, and get gov't subsidized housing indefinitely with no encouragement to get a job.
5/8/2008 6:00:45 PM
^well that's a little extreme, but more than likely government programs would def be encouraged over private solutions

^ that is what i beleive programs like welfare are here for. Economy is doing shitty and Person A got laid off with kids at home needing support. However, your ass better be out handing resume's and spending your time during the day getting a job. Not watching ricky lake and drinking beer.[Edited on May 8, 2008 at 6:16 PM. Reason : a]

Yall have made some good points but no one addressed America's Achilles heel, its Debtits in debt up to its eyeballs and there are some things that could cripple our country, namely the middle eastso with respect to stability right now we are very vulnerable also life is america consists of work work work, spend spend spendi dont think that is the real american dream, so i have to say it is not the #1 country right nowbut its only one reformation away from being #1 again

america is like that commercial where the guy is on his riding law mowerbragging about his big house, fancy car, golf club membership, etcthen say, you wanna know how i did it?im in debt up to my eyeballs....that is how i see this country right now, and an event like 9/11 can bring us to the brink of having to face that fact, and if an event in the futre does, then we're all screwed
5/8/2008 8:37:20 PM
speaking of debt, i bought a lot of gold back in the day and i was pleased to recently find out that its up to like $900 an ounce and when i bought most of mine it was like $400 an ounce...i'm no gold standard proponent but i enjoyed that little investment hike!

After looking at the link on dept by nations I have one question:Who the fuck is all that dept owed to? lol
5/9/2008 2:00:22 PM
You know, Cary, Raleigh, and Durham could all be said to be revolting, disgusting piles of shallow, materialistic yuppies whose only concern is themselves and their latest fad and their consumer mentality.Of course, every city in the area has a part of town like that. There are a lot of neighborhoods like that. If you go around north raleigh, or cary, or some of the new districts around durham, you'll see a ton of crap like this.Who gives a shit how those people live their lives? You can live in the same area and live according to a different standard. There are all kinds of people here, and you'll encounter all of them at different points in your life.I used to be overly obsessed about how other people lived their lives, too. Now I only care if it affects how I live my life. My quality of life is quite excellent, all things considered. We have our problems like any other country, and I don't think that's really bumped us from the proper #1 spot yet.

I do find it somewhat amusing when people get up in arms over military spending as a percentage of the federal budget. National defense is one of the few things re federal government is explicitly charged with, of course it will be a significant percentage.
5/9/2008 7:32:19 PM
yeah, i wasn't even going to start down that road. most people just don't give a shit about constitutionality, and the point hardly needs to be reinforced to those who do.but yeah, you're right.
5/9/2008 7:42:00 PM
what else is the federal government in charge of?
5/9/2008 7:47:19 PM
google: enumerated powers; 10th AmendmentI know someone like nutsmackr is going to bring the creative reading comprehension and logic in here. To me, 90% of it is pretty clear cut, and we're really fucking the dog (and have been for a loooong time).Shit, I think that we probably SHOULD expand the role of the fed gov't somewhat (nothing like what we have at the moment, though)--but damn, do it through the proper constitutional channels. Don't just say "this sucks--it's way too much of a pain in the ass!", and flat-out ignore the Constitution. It's a sucky asspain very much by design.[Edited on May 9, 2008 at 8:02 PM. Reason : asfd]
5/9/2008 8:02:20 PM
Correct. It's supposed to be damn near impossible for the federal gov. to do things beyond the scope of it's designed powers, that's why things like the broad expansion of the interstate commerce clause is utter and complete bullshit.
5/9/2008 8:26:50 PM
5/9/2008 8:36:47 PM
^ Which I absolutely agree with. Just elaborating on the complaints about Cary being so consumer-oriented.
5/10/2008 2:44:55 PM
Correct, national defense isone of the few things that congress is charged with.I honestly think though, that for our system to continue to function properly, state's are going to have to be given more leeway and authority to regulate some of the bigger issues.California and Alabama don't see eye to eye on abortion and marijuana, so why exactly are both regulated by Federal laws? The flexibility of a Federal democracy is the ability for local state's to adapt their laws to the values of their own people.
