Maybe because it's a societal norm in America?

^^^ and how is baby ear piercing not, then?

it's very common

just because the majority of people in here disagree with one practice doesn't automatically mean they support the other

^ case in point

i never had the desire to get my ears pierced and I'm glad my parents never forced me too. Personally I think it's just a tacky trend. Leave it up to the kid when they're older and can decide for themselves.

Jesus, why is everyone jumping on the circumcision joke? They are similar, not equal. You make it seem like the guy is coming out of left field on this.

Nowhere near as common as circumcision (in this country, anyway)

I thought it obvious that he was using the widespread practice of circumcision to point out that getting your ears pierced around the same age pales in comparison.

Parents want children to get chickenpox (or vaccine) when they are young because young adults and full adults can die from chicken pox. Or they can have very bad scarring that does not heal like it does when you are a young child.

Jeez, doesnt anyone watch southpark?

yes, that much is obvious

but he attached the unnecessary value judgments while doing so

Lewizzle said the same thing without assuming as much.

I don't see the big deal. I had mine done before I can remember, but I think I was less than 1.

What if a girl grows up and decides she doesn't WANT earrings? I personally don't like them and have never had mine pierced, I would honestly hate my parents if they gave me a hole that was still in my head now- that I had no choice about.

I got my ears pierced when I was 19, wore hoops for a few years and then took them out. I don't think anyone even notices that I had pierced ears now. I just don't think it's that big a deal one way or the other.

Yeah, wait till they're old enough to decide for themselves.

It is?

Piercing a baby's ears is a bad idea. The ears haven't finished growing yet so they can end up looking fucked up.

I wasn't allowed to get my ears pierced until I was 13.

pretty sure he's just drawing a parallel for further discussion of the general notion of the practice overall.

it happens in normal everyday conversation

I'd probably wait until they are older just so I can get something for free out of them. I'd be like "Ok, rake the yard, wash my car, and make me a sandwich and I'll pierce your ears."

Well I only got my ears pierced twice...both times with a gun...they're both even, and none of the holes are at weird angles, so I have no clue what you're talking about.

I got my first piercing when I was in the 3rd grade and then my 2nd set the summer before my senior year in high school. I don't want anything else pierced.

Have you ever had blood drawn?

Needle piercing is less painful than that. The gun piercing is like they are ripping a hole in your ear in comparison.

Yeah I have my blood taken a lot. But you're saying that everyone who gets a gun piercing will end up having their ear fall off which isn't the case. My holes are all even, and they don't have weird angles, it took no time for them to heal, I had no problems with them at all. I've never had any of my friends talk about how awful it was for them when they got their ears pierced with a gun.

Unless my friends and I are oddities then I don't think the gun was all that bad. I mean I'm not going to get pierced with a needle now to compare, but I'm not going to get anymore piercings anyway. I have enough holes in my body for now.
But for someone who has only gotten piercings with a gun I was not at all traumatized by it. Not when I was 8 and not when I was 17.
I'm sure the needle piercing is a great experience and you get a little wet everytime you think of it but seriously, the gun piercing will not make you ear fall off.

I think needle piercings are way worse. After they do it they have to put in the jewelery... I thought it was significantly less painful to get them done in 3 seconds with a gun...

Strange. putting in the jewelry just felt like she was pulling my ear a little.
