that doesn't negate the fact that it is a selfless act.

Oh, wow. I now have a dog, that I could have gotten from a shelter for free, instead I risked being caught stealing it. I totally gain from getting the dog.

There's quite a difference between feeling good about helping someone, versus, say, masturbating your ego by congratulating yourself for it in front of the entire internet.

^well in all reality, the point of me making this thread was probably more about me showing how I cared more about the dog than the dude....and I did.

^^As for the selfless act, you'd be doing it so that you felt better about yourself for helping someone and that, in and of itself, is not selfless

I'm all for giving the homeless folk food on occassion.

But if this guy clearly isn't too bad off. He hasn't eaten the dog yet.

the fact that you think about killing anyone is scary.
While my mom did raise me and my dog (really?) did not much for me, I'd say my mom. I know it sounds selfish. but my dog probably will not live much longer due to circumstances.

I'd rather help a stray than a homeless human.
I'd rather help a human I know and like over a random dog.
I'd rather help a dog I know and like over a random human.
When it comes to a dog I know versus a human I know, I would choose the one I like more.

So I do not value the life of a dog more, I see them as equal.

The person experiences pain differently than a dog. The person in this situation is sitting there going, "that asshole just bought a bag of dog food for this goddamn mutt and I am starving!"

The dog can just go eat a fucking squirrel.

What's to say the human did? Dogs don't have jobs. They are not humans. they don't need houses or sweaters either. They are dogs.

You "dogs are equal to humans" people are hopeless. You are out of touch with reality. You are really missing something in your life when you think of dogs as equals. You support pet food industries that manufacture food for pets kept as luxuries while millions of people starve. You claim to love animals but you take them out of their natural environment and force them to be "your buddy."

WTF?

this is the dumbest thing i've ever heard.

1st of all Dogs are and have been for thousands of years, domesticated, which means they can't fend for themselves
2nd i dont "support" pet food companies, i support my dog in getting a balanced diet while considering the time it would take to prepare food that would cost me more, and that the dog would probably enjoy less than that shit in the alpo can
3rd millions of people are starving but thats not my fault and by buying my dog food, it doesn't hurt those people anymore. if you give such a shit JOIN THE PEACE CORPS and if you're already in it, i dont want to hear about it
4th The dogs "natural environment" doesn't technically exist. name the last time you saw a ferrel golden retriever or pomeranian running around? I'm sure my dog prefers living with me (who feeds him, loves him, gives him plenty of attention, and hooks him up to get laid [really i do] by other dogs of the same breed) then living in the woods, scrounging for food while fighting parasites

you sir (or probably ma'am) are an idiot.

[Edited on April 29, 2008 at 12:26 AM. Reason : nevermind, just another liberal douche]

So you don't support a company by giving it money?

And the dog's natural environment doesn't exist because people like you have bred them to be useless lapdogs instead of animals able to fend for themselves. Stop breeding, buying and supporting the practice of owning pets and you won't have useless dogs that have to suffer when their owner quits loving them or can no longer take care of them.

I don't give a shit about a dog, but I would think people who do would want them treated better. If people are equal to dogs, why would you want to own them?

And I'm a "liberal douche" because I think a human's life is worth more than a dog's?!!?!?!

Altruism: Instinctive behavior that is detrimental to the individual but favors the survival or spread of that individual's genes, as by benefiting its relatives.

Doing for others to benefit yourself in the long run. There is no such thing as doing good deeds for no reason. At the least you will feel better and that is a reason that benefits you.

I was going to say something like this, but no need to now.

As for good deeds, I wrote a letter to my 95-year-old step grandma in a nursing home in New York. I do not expect one back

when they weren't anyway

it's just ass backwards to help a dog more than another person

anyway you slice it

to feel otherwise is more an indications of people's fucked up mentality than anything else

he didn't hand out money, he bought that dog 4x the amount of money in FOOD than the homeless dude

not drugs, not booze... fucking FOOD

it's just wrong

It's really not. I mean if the dog is hungry he can't ask anyone for food...the guy can. The dog can't take money and by alcohol, drugs or cigs...the guy can. The dog can't go to a shelter (without being put down) the guy can.
