Doesn't anyone else think that the "you needed to wear a suit" line was a test that sdatgc basically failed?I mean, think about it: you're interviewing at a cold calling firm. what happens when you cold call people? they throw up some roadblock to your sales pitch that you have to talk around. That's exactly what this guy did.You didn't have the quick wit / confidence to talk your way past his obstacle and you failed the test.I'm not guaranteeing that's true, but it seems possible...
4/22/2008 5:18:14 PM
^I definitely thought that myself, like maybe it was a game/test. However when I talked to him on the phone later I got a different vibe, without going into details the guy just seemed unprofessional. My background isn't exactly sales and he seemed to be unsure bout it, I think that's what caused him to back out of the interview, because that seemed to be his reasoning on the phone, however he was still willing to set one up Friday, but I told him not to bother. If a company isn't interested in someone they need not set up interviews, and if they do bother to set up interviews they should uphold their end of the bargain, and not cop out.to be honest though if it was a test I still wouldn't go jumping through hoops for a sales position like that. I was just entertaining the option, but I'm not desperate for a position, and sales isn't exactly the most exciting option

#1, I can't think of a single interview that I've been on since I was 18 where I wasn't in a suit except for 2. One of those I was in a shirt & tie because I had just come to NCSU and didn't have my suits in Raleigh. The other was when I was asked to interview after inquiring about a job. I've been dressed better than the interviewer more than once.#2, your spelling sucks. Someone that can't spell words that my 10 year old nephew spell does not impress me. Someone that is too lazy to actually spell words correctly when they know how to does not impress me. People that turn in an application or resume with misspellings do not get an interview from me. I'm not sure where you work now or have in the past but in the real world, you occasionally WRITE things down on PAPER. There's no spellcheck to keep you from looking illiterate.#3, YOU made an incorrect assumption about the interview. That is your fault. It isn't their fault or tww's fault. In the real world, everything is formal unless otherwise specified. Your expectations don't mean shit.#4, Yes, Sageworks did come off as unprofessional. They should have interviewed you. After you left, they should have written "NO SUIT" across your resume/application in bright red letters and never called you again. This thread should tell you something. So far there's only 1-2 people that agree with you. Everyone else thinks you should have worn a suit. That should tell you something about the expectations & norms in the interview world. Remember this thread the next time you go on an interview & wear a damn suit.

Do not work at Sageworks. Ever. Thank God your interview fell through. My boyfriend worked at Sageworks for 3 months, and they engage in multiple unethical, despicable, illegal activities. Run, do not walk, away from this place and never look back.

dave421:#1 your first sentence is incorrect, it should read "I can think of only 2 times since I was 18....", instead you make a definitive statement and then immediately contradict it.#2 could say that someone who doesn't know basic sentence structure doesn't impress me... but the real point of it is that there is a difference between writing something by hand and trying to get a post up quickly on a message board. Refer to: http://www.helium.com/items/854603-understanding-online-writing-takes#3 I think it's was established by sage works that I needed a suit for that interview; I'm not really seeing your point here. The issue was with how they conducted themselves, both before, during, and after the interview. Another issue was the irony in the environment of their office in respect to their policy. But having to wear a suit wasn't the issue.#4 Going back somewhat to #3, I think there was more going on than suit wearing, or lack there of. And in response to your last paragraph, the only thing this thread tells me is what most every thread on tww tells me, that tww is a place for jokers and hacks to talk big. Some people in this post had legitimate remarks about the original topic, but most of the people were just posting nonsense, as usual.[Edited on April 23, 2008 at 9:37 AM. Reason : w]

there is no need for strict sentence structure online (imo). but I at least try and spell words correctly. there is a little bit of a difference.

4/23/2008 11:59:31 AM
#1, sentence structure /= spelling. Most 10 year olds can spell the words that you can't. My sentence was incorrect because I typed it out and then remembered the 2 occasions. I didn't care to go back and fix the whole sentence. There's a big difference between what I typed and what you typed. Basically, I can spell and you can't.#2, It doesn't matter what impresses you. I hire people. You're trying to get hired. Perhaps you should take this opportunity to actually listen to people that know more than you. Then again, this is TWW, obviously you know more than anyone else. You weren't trying to get a post up quickly, I was. You repeatedly misspelled the same words using the exact same mistakes. That's a lack of spelling ability, not typing mistakes.#3, The point was that you made the mistake and then tried to get mad that they expected you to be professional enough to wear a suit to an interview. It doesn't matter what they wear. Did you know what they wore beforehand? No. Therefore, you should have been dressed for an interview which you were not. This entire thread is based upon you getting angry for being dismissed because you weren't wearing a suit. I think my point should be fairly easy to understand for anyone that can win a 6th grade Spelling Bee. Oh, wait....#4, So you're basically saying that you screwed up and should have overcome the objection? Or is it that they dismissed you because they didn't like you? Either way, it falls on you, not them. Again, 90% of this is your fault imo. They could have handled it better but you pretty much gave up when you showed up in khakis.

I pretty much agree completely with what dave has said. There is a difference between stream-of-consciousness writing (which is what message board writing normally is) and spelling correctly in that writing. You made a multitude of spelling mistakes. I noticed them right away, and they bothered me. For someone who's job it is to be pretty detail oriented (a recruiter or sales person), this DOES matter. There have been multiple people on this message board who either act the fool, or ignore basic common courtesy that have later wanted ME to recommend them for, or refer them to job opportunities. What you do on the internet DOES reflect in the real world.
4/24/2008 2:18:12 AM
^ yep, it doesthe interviewer figured out they weren't hiring this guy in the span of about 30 seconds (for reasons now obvious to everybody reading this thread) and came up with an objective way to give him the boot. nobody would use the suit thing as a real excuse not to do an interview, he just didn't want to waste his time.it also brings up the point that if you have an interview you just put on a suit - if you've already taken time off from another job to go do the interview spend the extra 15 minutes changing then you won't have to spend hours of your life on the internet rationalizing poor decision making and trying to transfer responsibility to another party

dave421: My sentence was incorrect because I typed it out and then remembered the 2 occasions. I didn't care to go back and fix the whole sentenceNoen: stream-of-consciousness writing (which is what message board writing normally is)Both of those discuss non-editing. If I reviewed my typing I could and can see the misspellings. But I don't, I just hit "post reply" and so there are a lot of obvious errors. You both use the same argument in defense of grammar, but ignore it when it's about spelling? That doesn't make sense. Also with the suit thing, I understand that people think I should have worn a suit, and those people may even be right (agree to disagree on that topic)... but sageworks initial phone call with me, before a suit was involved was unprofessional; the guy was hanging up the phone when I had to ask him for a contact number, and the meeting place... who does that? The company's behavior was lackadaisical, and unprofessional from day one, which was actually represented by their office structure.
4/24/2008 9:57:16 AM
sounds like you are just a scorned and bitter interviewee to me.and if you don't understand the difference between grammatical review, and spelling correction, I feel even more sorry for you.If you type while LOOKING at the screen, you can see WORD for WORD how you are spelling, and can easily hit that magical backspace key to correct spelling mistakes on a word. It takes no review; it's inline, as you go, good spelling. If you are hunting on the keyboard the whole time, then you SHOULD review your writing and learn how to type properly to avoid such embarrassment next time. Seriously.[Edited on April 24, 2008 at 11:13 AM. Reason : see this is a review, adding a semi-colon in place of a comma, to make better structure.]
