I'm taking Songahm TaeKwonDo. I started in '93 but had to give it up in '96 because we moved to an area that didn't have a studio. I was really bummed because I had earned my first degree black and was made a junior instructor. So I felt like my achievements would go to waste. Here I am almost 12 years later and I've picked it back up. But things seem to be very different now. Back when I used to take it, I was in a program that taught multiple disciplines -- judo, jujitsu, a touch of kung fu and muay thai. Apparently that program now focuses on weapons rather than hand-to-hand combat because everyone's style seems to be pretty traditional TKD. During my first practice, I was working the bag and one of my instructors stopped me and said, "What else have you studied? What you are doing is not TaeKwonDo." Basically I was in a muay thai stance and smacking the bag from one side of the room to the other with kicks and nearly knocking it down with punches and elbows. So I explained to him that while I refine my technique with TKD, I spar in a very similar style to mixed martial arts (but within TKD rules). It's pretty cool though because now I'm being used as an example of how to me an effective fighter. Sure some of the kids can nail 150 punches in 45 seconds, but my 60-70 are all knock-out blows. So now I'll be testing for my second degree in a year, and once I've relearned my older forms, I'll be an instructor again. And I'm pretty determined to bring that aggressive, mixed martial arts style back to (at least) that studio. There's is just a greater level of discipline and respect in that kind of environment. Also, during my absence from TKD, I wrestled. So I'm looking forward to some ground combat so I can try mixing in some wrestling moves with the judo I remember.
