course not

^so then how do you distinguish the noun and verb forms of "envelope"^^that does bother the hell out of me, though it's technically not incorrect.[Edited on April 15, 2008 at 11:11 AM. Reason : .]
4/15/2008 11:11:20 AM
I mean, they are spelled differently too. Envelope would be the nounand envelop is the verb.[Edited on April 15, 2008 at 11:14 AM. Reason : +]
4/15/2008 11:12:09 AM
i understand that, but if you're going to misprounce the noun as the verb, why not just flip both of them? And you do realize it's wrong too, right?
4/15/2008 11:13:01 AM
Why did you (Dammit100) spell the verb with an e on the end?And saying impact on is not wrong, though using it as a verb is.
4/15/2008 11:14:47 AM
I think dammit is talking about something different than I am. I would never say en VEL ope for the noun. Sorry, didn't realize ANYONE did that.
4/15/2008 11:15:51 AM
^^touche. I wasn't thinking clearly. -1 pt for me[Edited on April 15, 2008 at 11:16 AM. Reason : consider this one a loss]

^x6 The verb usage of the word at issue has been branded "bureaucratic," "pretentious," and "vile" by a number of panels. As for the noun usage, I agree with you--but I reserve impact for physical contact of objects.[Edited on April 15, 2008 at 11:18 AM. Reason : .]

You don't have to defend the misuse of it as a verb. I completely agree. But one of the publications I work on uses it alllllllllll the time, and they make me leave it

^^ Um. . .I wasn't defending the misuse of it as a verb--I hate it. And the noun usage as I listed it. In any event, academics and government types love it. They think it's a forceful verb--but it's really just incorrect usage. [Edited on April 15, 2008 at 11:23 AM. Reason : .]
4/15/2008 11:21:29 AM
I know it's a David Cross bit, but I agree w/it. People who misuse the word "literally"
4/15/2008 11:23:44 AM
Defending why it's a misuse, not defending it being misused.[Edited on April 15, 2008 at 11:24 AM. Reason : damn there's a lot of confusion going on]
4/15/2008 11:24:03 AM
I don't want to get into it, but there's a certain mountain range nearby that I grew up pronouncing very differently from (probably) most of you. I always wonder which pronunciation they teach out west.
4/15/2008 11:25:14 AM
apple-latch-in That's correct, right?
4/15/2008 11:26:05 AM
When people pronounce "fiscal" as "physical""We gotta have physically sound policies" etc.I went to a local commissioners meeting, and every one of them did this.
4/15/2008 11:32:39 AM
^^There are two pronunciations. App-a-latch-in is the one that seems most prevalent in the South. The other is App-a-lay-she-un.[Edited on April 15, 2008 at 11:37 AM. Reason : +]
