^That looks driveable. Cost = $0 Unless you were at fault for the other guy's damage...

Lets be jews and inconvenience other drivers on the road by squeezing those extra few miles out of a tank of gas. WOOO i'm so cool i worked hard to save $5 in gas.
4/29/2008 2:32:31 PM
I drive 20,000 per year.I was getting 25ish mpg. Now, I'm getting around 36 on average.20,000 / 25 = 800 gallons per year. 800 gallons/year * $3.50/gallon = $2800 a year gas expense before.20,000 / 36 = 555 gallons per year. 555 gallons/year * $3.50/gallon = $1942 a year gas expense afterBy counting my wife in, the difference in total gas costs per year for us is roughly $1500.For $1500/year minimum, you bet I will "inconvenience" someone who finds the speed limit and slow acceleration intolerable. It also makes me a safer driver, with no possibility of getting a ticket. And these are low-ball numbers, cuz we all know gas isn't going to average $3.50.Folks can rant, and bang their steering wheels, give me the bird, tailgate, etc. - it isn't going to change a thing. I'll speed up, if they pay me $1500+ per year to do it.[Edited on April 29, 2008 at 2:44 PM. Reason : a]

ok maybe you are the exception.
4/29/2008 2:52:34 PM
I don't drive below the speed limit and even if i floor it i don't accelerate fast. The guy you want to bitch about is the retard in the passing lane going slow.
4/29/2008 6:28:09 PM
I can understand wanting to save gas but if there are 5 people behind you having to use more gas to deal with the interruption in the flow of traffic then you can't say this is for the environment. The net effect to the Whales is the same -- Dave

i like my smug emissions34mpg personal best
4/30/2008 9:05:08 PM
^^ Unless they're driving like assholes, they're saving gas too.My 2007 Chevy Cobalt (5 spd) supposedly gets 25 mpg city. Since I changed to synthetic oil I've routinely been getting over 40 mpg just by driving patiently. So this past tank of gas I decided to drive like a maniac (flooring it at green lights, racing around people to pass, etc.). The gauge currently says 35.4 mpg. This is 100% city/town (wilmington & castle hayne) driving. I'd love to know where the 25 mpg figure came from because I've never had economy that bad.If I wanted to really save money, my car gets about 55-58 mpg at 35 mph. The biggest waste of gas is red lights. I've learned to drive at just the right speed so I can get all the way to work without stopping. I coast a lot in traffic rather than speeding up/slowing down, but I've always done that. Nothing else is really worth the effort unless you do something like disconnecting the air compressor and power steering, etc.]
4/30/2008 9:15:26 PM
I don't have power steering or a passenger side mirror.I do have AC though!I recently changed the o2 sensor (16 years old) and I think that improved things a fair amount. I'll know in another week or 300 miles whichever comes first! I wish I had some kind of gauge besides the gas pump every 2 weeks.

yeah the looks and the people switching lanes quickly and zooming past me only for me to pull up next to them at the next light makes me people just don't get it... even with gas at over 3.50 a gallon people don't realize that just slowing their roll a little bit can make a huge difference. I still get to places in the same amount of time, but I use way less brakes and get much better mileage, and I would have to think less wear and tear on the vehicle.
4/30/2008 10:40:39 PM
While you're accelerating as slow as possible someone else is getting stuck at the red light for another cycle. While you're coasting for 1/4 mile before making your turn everyone behind you is coming to a near stop and having to accelerate again after you turn.Be reasonable. Accelerate at a reasonable speed. Your gas mileage really shouldn't suffer much for it. You don't own the road any more than the speeders.
4/30/2008 11:57:41 PM
no not really... the only time i coast to a stop is for a red light... no difference than zooming all the way up to it and slamming on the brakes... and at lights if it's a busy light then i accelerate faster than normal. I do take others into consideration... on a 4 lane road though if they can get around me... i could give two shits about them... time and time again i see people pull out from behind me and race past me... only to be sitting right there with me at the next light.. it's amusing really. I didn't realize it until I started watching other people who I would race past and then be sitting next to at the light... no need to be in a hurry, no need to race from light to light
5/1/2008 6:42:16 AM
It really is amazing how pissed people get at me for going the speed limit. I get into the far right lane when feasible and available. But I'm not going to go 60ish in a 55 just because you're an asshole and want to get to your destination 30s sooner. I've found that if I go the speed limit to work, versus going 65, I gain 15% in economy, and only lose 2 or 3 minutes. Plus, I don't get jammed at all the lights. Funny how that works out. But I don't agree with the coasting for 1/4 mile to a turn and shutting the engine off while moving business. I do my best not to inconvenience other drivers. Though if they feel like I am, that's their problem.
5/1/2008 8:14:30 AM
^ good point, it is very annoying when someone in the right lane is going 5 under on a interstate/freeway however....i've done the speed limit thing and other aspects, but my milage only really varies by 1-2mpg22-24 something typically

how are you gonna tell people that they are being dangerous, when you admit that you'll tailgate and cut people off? you might think that isn't dangerous, but it can be....
5/1/2008 2:55:51 PM
i don't really care if it's dangerous, and am not bullshitting myself or anyone else about it.i drive hard when there aren't other cars around. i don't drive like an asshole when other people are a factor, with the exception of when they do stuff like drive in the left lane when they aren't passing someone. then i don't really care--fuck 'em.
5/1/2008 2:59:12 PM
Gosh, it isn't at all surprising that you've been pulled over a ton of times while driving.
5/1/2008 3:11:13 PM
to be clear, Duke isn't saying what he does is correct...he's saying fuck it.though I would find it hard to bitch at someone for going the speed limit, it must be the acceleration issue he's taken a bigger issue with. left lane, not passing, gtfo of the way. right lane, speed limit, fuck people behind you tailgating you.
5/1/2008 3:45:45 PM
You would have to be a push over to speed up just because a car behind you is in close proximity to your bumper.I mean do people actually respond to that? They could (and probably do) do entire studies on peoples reasoning behind their driving antics. It would be interesting to say the least.
5/1/2008 6:29:42 PM
^^ yeah on I40 the other night returning from work in RTP I was going about 72mph in the 2nd furthest to the right of the 4 lanes. I do not know what his deal was but this cocksucker was straight up riding my ass. The time was around 10pm so it was not like there was heavy traffic; so he had 2 lanes to the left to pass in and keep cruising. My theory is.....a. He is just a giant douchebag, thinking everyone needs to get out of his wayb. Just plain ignorant/stupid not knowing tailgating is not only unsafe but it pisses people off.c. Is a foreigner and hasn't learn in america we pass cars on the left.d. A jew and was just trying to save a few cents by drafting off of me.

I get 37.5 on the highway, and somewhere close to 32 mixed driving. The best I have ever seen in my car is 44 on some long distance highway driving/coasting.
5/5/2008 4:11:12 PM
if you worry that much, just sell your car and get a civic. it'll get 45-48 and you dont have to drive like you're a lost 80 yr old
5/5/2008 6:24:09 PM
I drive a Civic VX and I just got 52 on my recent fillup no idea why. I've been doing mostly city driving and that usually gives me 45 or so. I just may get a vanity plate to rub it in people's faces this summer

TULIPlovrWas that you hypermiling yesterday on I40 eastbound around 6pm in the camaro going Fucking 55mph in a 65 driving in the 2nd most Left lane of the 4. I saw cars in front of me breaking and acting erratic. Then i catch up to see some jackass in the 2nd leftlane driving 10 below the speed limit w/o his emergency blinkers. I am guessing 55 b.c i had to slow down to 65 bc of the disturbance this car was making.Good job prick its people like you that cause traffic jams and accidents

7/2/2008 1:26:27 PM
Last week I bought 9 tanks of gas averaging at 20 gallons.
7/2/2008 2:10:28 PM
I just started this and its actually very fun I find myself paying attention to the road a lot more (I feel I am a pretty safe and cautious driver anyways) and also noticing how silly the people are that fly away from every light, and accelerate to full speed only to brake again 50 yds later for the next light etc.I stay in the right-hand lane and watch people fly by me on the left only to get stacked up at the next redlight. the best part is that probably 75% of the time on my way too work (not as much on the way back) everyone seems to want to get into the left hand lane. So people will pass me and speed away from me and then at the next redlight im first in line in the right hand lane and they are 4 cars back in the left It does annoy me when someone rides my tail when im going the speed limit in the right hand lane but I think ill get used to that. I havent felt like anything I am doing is even remotely dangerous so Im not sure what people are complaining about. If I can see that a light ahead of me just turned red, even if its 50 yards away, there is no reason to be riding the gas all the way until like 20 yards from the light. etc.there is someone who leaves at the same time as me from my apartment complex nearly every day now that I started a new project 3 weeks ago and Im coming in at a different time. They fly in their little BMW all the way, heavy on the accel from lights etc. But even on the days where I have accelerated slow, driven the speed limit etc. I have seen him walking into the building as im pulling up in my car meaning im probably about 3 minutes behind him based on where he parks (its about a 15 minute drive for me). Not worth wasting all that gas.[Edited on July 2, 2008 at 2:29 PM. Reason : ]
7/2/2008 2:24:26 PM
if you can go through all the traffic lights on your way to or from work without stopping or hitting the brakes you win!
7/2/2008 2:31:11 PM
hypermiling is just a fancy word for driving conservatively..except for those morons that tailgate or turn their car of while going down hills, effectively losing all the advantages of power steering and power brakes.funny thing is that a lot of fuel injection systems cut fuel all together when in gear/off throttle, so they could just be coasting down in gear and getting the same effect on mileage.
7/2/2008 2:35:17 PM
7/2/2008 2:41:20 PM
^i think most of us would admit driving 15-20 mph under the speed limit is not safe.
