lesser of 2 evils...

get shot in the jungle at 18 by the viet-cong

get exposed to dioxins in the jungle at 18 that allowed you to shoot the viet-cong first....come home...get married...have a family...live to 65 with cancer that you would probably get anyway...

you can pollute, you just have to pay us money to be able to pollute

thats how green credits work

polluting is ok as long as you pay money to be able to do it

we'll use the money to offset the relatively miniscule amounts of carbon you emit (and to send our kids to college and buy new houses)

^^^ Well then why are you spreading blatant lies about them? I know this is Chit Chat but you're contributing to the dumbification of America by spreading misinformation.

^ Why do you act like Al Gore gets this money? This would be a state or federal program. No one is making them pollute but if they do they can buy credits from some company that didn't go over their limit. This is capitalism man. You don't hate capitalism, do you? If you do you're nothing but a communist.

Al Gore is SO concerned about global warming guys... I mean, he only has a 12 bedroom mansion that he heats and cools... and only a small pool outside with heated water. At least he took a small private jet to accept his nobel prize. He's obviously very concerned!

HE COULD BE DOING A LOT WORSE!

Al Gore doesn't get all the money for carbon credits obviously

but

Quote :
"Gore buys his carbon off-sets from himself--the Generation Investment Management LLP, "an independent, private, owner-managed partnership established in 2004 with offices in London and Washington, D.C." of which he is both chairman and founding partner."

Bush & Friends investing in oil and making money = BAD

Gore & Friends investing in carbon credits and making money = GOOD

If he gets them from himself then how does he make any money? That's like me giving myself $50 for an XBox game. It's not like anyone even uses these yet anyway. How can he make money off of a program that doesn't exist?

and who cares that clean diesel, ethanol, etc, actually emit more greenhouse gases than combustion engines...i mean they have words in them like "clean" and "renewable" so they must be good

i'm just glad we have someone like al gore who is smart enough to dissect 4 billion years of temperature data and co2 levels and conclude beyond a shadow of a doubt that the microfraction of time humans have been on this earth is causing the earth to get hotter than it ever has in all of history

If his company doesn't actually conduct any business then he shouldn't be given any carbon credits to begin with. But this program doesn't even exist so there's no need to even debate whether he's doing this or not. You can't trade credits that don't exist.

^ Not that this is about those or anything, but I'm against those. They're stupid, temporary, more wasteful than fossil fuel initiatives.

Are you daft? How can he trade shit that doesn't exist? This is you just pointing out to everyone else how much bullshit you're spewing. There's no program that doles out credits for him to trade. How can he trade them if they aren't there?

you mean you're going to scan this "VISA" card and magically pay my tab without me having money that exists on me? what a wild concept

carbon credits arent a physical tangible entity

they're credits, ie, you put 100,000 tons "over the limit" of CO2 into the atmosphere

carbon credit company says "pay me $10,000 for each 1,000 tons you pollute over normal limit"

carbon credit company gets $1,000,000

that money goes to other companies who pollute under the limit

everybody still pollutes, but some people get paid now

even though POLLUTION is supposed to be the culprit, nobody pollutes any less...yet thats supposed to help the environment?

If murder is illegal and instead of a prison sentence I can pay $5,000,000 to get off free, I could murder as many people as I wanted as long as I had the money to pay for it...murders would still take place yet somehow it would be ok, because people would get rich

Why would a company pay a carbon credit company for overpolluting if they don't have to? That makes no sense to me. The only way this program could work is if it was government enforced, which it is not.

carbon credits most certainly do exist conceptually...its basically intellectual property...its like a coupon...you seem to be acting like carbon credits are just an idea that havent been implemented...Germany (among other nations) has been using carbon credits for years and years and years

^the reason it works is because instead of the government forcing business to do certain things or limit their pollution (which could be considered hindering their business, etc), they are allowed to continue to pollute, as long as they pay someone...they get to run their business as usual, and somebody else profits...how exactly they transform that money into carbon sequestration, and how anybody could even attempt to quantify the exact amounts of carbon transferred is a mystery

As far as you and I are concerned (people in the USA) they do not exist physically and have no been conceptually implemented. If they were implemented, they would be government regulated. As much as the government has a propensity to fuck shit up, I would find it hard for them to simply regulate the transfer of money between companies for pollution which they already keep track of (which is the role you say Al Gore's company plays). I fail to see how Al Gore would profit off of this very significantly.

They do exist and companies do provide carbon credits. Businesses buy them so they can feel good about their pollution... they paid someone to go plant trees and shit. That's the way it works and there are several companies in the US that provide this service.

What makes you think they have to be government regulated? OH you're a liberal fucking democrat who thinks the only solution to anything is a government program... even on problems that don't exist.

uh, yes they do...that what i've been trying to tell you

and they're not government regulated in the US because they're currently transferred on a voluntary basis...you can get tax breaks if you buy carbon credits to offset your pollution

but again, this doesnt change the net amount of pollution

so what we've learned is pollution is bad...but pollution is just fine as long as you pay someone to be able to pollute

Why would a company pay Al Gore's company when they could simply pay the less-polluting company directly? I don't see how Al Gore profits from any of this.

I never said I wanted this to happen. I don't know if would provide solutions or not. All I was doing was simply pointing out your blatant misinformation regarding all of this stuff. You can go back and look at all of my posts. I have never endorsed a cap and trade emissions program either privately or regulated by government. I just hate it when people like you spread lies to people are less informed.

Are you not getting it?

Company A burns a lot of fuels in producing their product. Company A tries to increase image. Company A buys carbon credits from Gore to both get a tax break and to plan some trees for a PR stunt. Gore profits.

I mean that's the most rudimentary scenario possible. Please to grasp.

Why would they pay Gore? Who the fuck cares what he thinks? If they're fucking idiots enough to pay him let them do it. Personally, I don't give a fuck what the company does. It's not any worse than shit other people do to make money.

IT'S NOT A FUNCTION OF THAT! THEY PAY GORE'S COMPANY TO SETTLE THEIR CONSCIOUS FOR DUMPING IN A RIVER AND/OR TO GET THE EPA OFF THEIR BACK.

And i never faulted Gore for profiting. I said I admire him for it. In most situations, what he's doing is called fraud.

So you're admitting that he does have a company now? Because you sure are back peddling from that whole "IT DOESN'T EXIST" thing.
