This is why I don't want to be a parent. I had a stable upbringing and good values around me. But I went nuts. Other friends of mine from high school with the same background didnt. I wouldnt know what to do with my own child. On one hand you want to protect them, but on the other, kids try their damndest to rebel against anything you try to tell them.

Also punchmonk that post is bittersweet because it makes my dormant idealism and hopeless romanticism bubble to the surface

srsly though its dormant because I'm a coward and hate putting myself out there after I had my heart broken. I went the weak route and became cynical instead of just trying to learn from the experience and looking forward. The fact that I recognize this does little to change my behavior for the better, rather, I fear the cynicism fuels some of my regretful decisions

I really relate this experience of mine to part of Hey Jude

And any time you feel the pain, hey, Jude, refrain
Don't carry the world upon your shoulders
Well don't you know that its a fool who plays it cool
By making his world a little colder

I'm that fool

damn dude, you should've sat your folks down and had a serious talk (I would've anyway, of course, I did at age 15)

with parents like that, it's a wonder you turned out ok

(don't get me wrong, your parents seem like good people, but the road to hell is paved with good intentions)

a perfect example of how our generation is coddled to the point of ridiculousness by our parents.

CUT THE DAMN CORD ALREADY.

my parents said, "good luck, make good grades, dont do anything stupid"...kicked me out the door on their way to the beach. I havent lived at home since I graduated high school.

This makes sense to me. It's not unreasonable to ask your child to call home before leaving the county. I called my parents (almost) every time I went on a road trip to let them know where I was going. Actually, now that I think about it, I still do...

The rest of it just made me LOL.

i think the fact his parents had to explicitly state that operating system reinstallations were forbidden is a good indicator of how l33t qntmfred was/still is.

also, this makes me feel strange... even my first year of college, i called home once every 2 weeks... if even that...

the funny thing is, his parents are baby boomers

and unless they're Mormons they probably had lots of premarital sex and did enough drugs to make Mick Jagger proud

i hope for your sake you acted like a card-carrying adult and experienced life, made mistakes, and learned from them, and became a better person for it

My mom made driver contracts for my younger brother and sister when they first got their permits.

I never had a "college contract" like this, but the PC part might've been good for me, since I deleted a TON of stuff (some of it important) off my 4GB computer to make room for Counter Strike

V Oh it was definitely worth deleting a bunch of .dll files. I barely managed to squeeze that game onto my computer.

^^ haha

i call my parents...they ask "what are you up to?"

i say "eh, i'm in California" (or Canada...or whatever)

i don't know, if you're in college and going on some major trip, i understand calling your parents and letting them know. if you're going to a Durham Bulls game, or even down to the beach for a day, i think it's silly to have to call for permission.

No kidding.

Quote :
"i'm all for letting my kids practice good judgment, without telling them no for every explicit scenario

having to deal with the full consequences of your own fuck-up is a better teaching experience than just being told not to do it"

Yup. My folks always told me 'if you end up in jail, don't expect us to bail you out. If you were doing something stupid, you deserve to spend the night there' As I've gotten older, I've come to realize that and stupid enough to get caught was the unspoken addition to that statement

It would have been very easy for me to come to college and do this:
Quote :
"I know a lot of kids who have gone nuts (combination of alcohol, drugs, and freedom) because there parents imposed this shit on them in high school and tried to do it in college"

When I was in high school, taking the city bus home was intoxicating because if I so desired, I could stop at the library on the way home! Or Starbucks, or my work to spend my $rhodeisland on fabric, and I didn't have to rely on my folks.

Coming to college was completely overwhelming for the first couple of weeks: "You mean I have to get myself to classes on time? WTF this isn't fair"

If I had matured any sooner than I did, socially, I'd have been in a world of academic, and maybe judicial, hurt.

Quote :
"yeah i'm really terrified of fucking up any kids that i have
hopefully that will go away, or i can just turn it into making myself a better parent"

I used to be.
Then I realized I've got more common sense and a better grasp of how harsh the world can be than a good many parents now, and I realize that even if I fall short of my own expectations as a parent, I'll still be a better parent than a good many of my peers.

The stuff qntmfred's parent put in that contract really makes me go How the HELL did he turn out so well???

i thought it was cute. my parents didnt have me sign a contract, but i did certainly get many conversations. hell if i tell my mom that i am going to a bar to hang out with some friends later in the evening these days she gets all "well be SAFE. you dont have to drink if you dont want too. nothing good happens after midnight!"

also - when my mom dropped me off at college on the first day - she did say "of course i love you and i will support you, but you have until August 2004 to figure this stuff out and then i'm cutting you off"

beat it by 2 months!

This level of control over a kid scares the crap out of me. My parents were perfectly happy to let me and my brother live with our mistakes without holding them over our heads forever. (However, considering my brother dropped out of school, technically, this only got them a 50% success rate.)
There's a HUGE difference between actually making mature and responsible decisions, and just making decisions based on "My parents said so." Parents that want to keep their kids under their thumbs forever just don't get it.

mine trusted me.

I did have some funny "what are you up to?" calls. Answering honestly from the beach, in the mountains, Chicago, NY, on a boat off shore, in charleston, beafort, anapolis, FL and other places were always fun to get a reaction. The shock quickly wore off.

Yes, it may be a bit much, as others pointed out, but I am glad parents like that exist in the US.

Sadly though, I don't think many are left, especially among today's generation having kids for the first time.
