Page 2. Two pages of a yummy vegetable.Yeah when it comes to hard boiled eggs, I really don't care for the yolk texture.Mmmmm I can't wait for my snack later! I love avocados.]

i bought 5 and got 4 chillin in the fridge, one is on the counter next to some bananas. i hope the apples in the fridge don't cause them all to ripen at once! avocados mature on the tree but do not ripen until they fall off or are picked. only a mature avocado will ripen. so watch out what you buy![Edited on April 9, 2008 at 10:22 PM. Reason : ^avocado is NOT a vegetable. its a fruit! or a fat if you want to get down to it nutritionally. ]

What's up with all y'all refrigerating them? That's not right.
4/9/2008 10:31:01 PM
you can refridgerate ripened avocado to stop the ripening process.
4/9/2008 10:32:39 PM
Why would you buy 5 ripe avocados?
4/9/2008 10:33:25 PM
How do you grow avaocados?
4/9/2008 10:40:47 PM
I'm allergic to avocado.....thankfully I don't like it anyway....so it's all good.....makes eating certain countries foods difficult sometimes but meh
4/9/2008 10:52:34 PM
^^I don't know if you could grow avocado here. Maybe if you have a greenhouse. I've seen people grew them in florida though.
4/9/2008 10:56:57 PM
I think my parents have an avocado tree in Phoenix....Though I've never actually seen an avocado on it, and it's pretty small. I believe that my dogs like to urinate on it....so apparently dog piss does not help grow avocado trees
4/9/2008 10:58:11 PM
good avocados come from grafted clones I thinkavocado trees take forever to produce a couple lame fruits and are therefore usually just decorativespeaking of decorativeI like avocado imagery in art (strange, I know)

Jesus Christ.....reading this thread blows my mind...I just don't get how a person likes this fruit.....Like cilantro.....how in the hell does anyone tolerate that discusting thing.
4/10/2008 5:24:30 AM
If you don't like cilantro, you hate America
4/10/2008 5:32:31 AM
^^ OMFG EVERY HUMAN BODY AND BRAIN IS DIEFFERENT!!! In fact, as far as avocados go, they don't have much of a taste of their own, so unless some people perceive a nasty taste in it because of some weird genetics in their body, I don't see how anybody can call it "disgusting."To me, they taste great, and even greater with salt, sugar, lemon, etc.And they are super-healthy.
4/10/2008 7:44:16 AM
^^Cilantro tastes nothing like parsley to me...not even close. I couldn't tell you what it tastes like to me because I've never ever come across anything that remotely tastes similar. I'm aware however, in my many discussions with people over the years, that either you love it or you hate it. Most people love it...but there are a few who hate it. I mean I could maybe name 2 people besides myself....maybe.^Obviously...I just sayin that's how I feel about em. I am not now, nor should I ever be a food critic. I like mac & cheese with ketchup on it. I also, if sitting in front of a top sirloin steak and a plate of french fries would choose the fries. Not because I don't like steak, but just because I like fries better...
4/10/2008 8:15:36 AM
have you all seen the Good Eats about avocado? it's pretty good...Alton Brown makes a cake frosting with avocado, it looked whack to me
4/10/2008 8:19:20 AM
I also loathe cilantro.

this thread reminded me that someone bought 2 ripe avocados 2 weeks ago and left them at my house.now they're set to root themselves and hopefully some day will join my peach tree and 2 apple trees.
4/10/2008 8:41:51 PM
Avacadoes are more of a texture than a taste.Thank you wolfpackgrrr for the bit about the genetics and cilantro tasting. And thank you 0EPII1 for your bit about egg yolks.[Edited on April 10, 2008 at 8:49 PM. Reason : r]

This is what I just found when I cut open the avocado I bought two days ago
5/8/2008 4:27:55 PM

^^restaurant guacamole nearly always comes from bruised/browned avocados like that(they're not bad, just overripe -- if they're bad, you'll know, 'cause they'll smell really funny and may have mold on them)don't worry though, they taste nearly exactly the same and don't pose any health risks
5/8/2008 4:51:49 PM
yeah i'd still eat that avocado, hope you didn't throw it out!
5/8/2008 5:03:19 PM
lolthe last 2 avocados ripened today after i took them out of the fridge a couple days agoand i'm not even there to enjoy them and i forgot to give them away. avocados, anyone?
5/8/2008 5:13:06 PM
i just ate a slice and my throat is tingly... maybe i'm allergic to them? bananas do the same thing. (i love me some guac though.)
5/8/2008 5:13:24 PM
holy shit... i just looked it up and it looks like avocados and bananas ARE related allergy-wise...huh i guess i just discovered my very first food allergy. doesn't bother me very much though so i'm going to keep eating them.
5/8/2008 5:22:24 PM
fresh guacamole with lots of avocados ftw
5/8/2008 5:27:31 PM
Does anyone know if there is a way to keep part of an avocado if you don't have a vacuum sealer? If I'm just cooking for me, I may not want to use an entire avocado at once, but right now I pretty much have to since it doesn't keep once it's been cut. It'd be nice if I could use half and then use the other half a day or two later...
5/8/2008 5:55:43 PM
rub some lemon juice on the part that is cut and exposed to the air, it doesn't change the flavor of it
