is there any way to get an instant extremely responsive session going on 54mbit ? I want to be able to remote to my desktop from laptop while I have poker rooms going, but it takes a few to get updated screens.

Using RDP? Before connecting change your options for a smaller screen res/colors and less functions ... but generally over an internal network it should be fast no matter what. But experiment and find what works best.

yeah i switched everything to dialup, it seemed to almost run worse. maybe i'm hallucinating.

Go with logmein.comI love that stuff.Just so you know GM, it's extremely laggy...so be sure to disable desktop backgrounds and such.[Edited on April 11, 2008 at 11:50 PM. Reason : s]

I need to be able to troubleshoot people's problems remotely. I have several workers call me on a daily basis that are experiencing problems that (as they describe) don't make sense. It would be a hell of a lot easier if I could see what they are talking about.Does LogMeIn do that effectively?[Edited on May 21, 2008 at 11:34 AM. Reason : .]

yep, it works perfectly. no router config. and its free. just have them run through the installer and set up an account.

yepper...i'm sure it's been discussed in this thread, but essentially:hamachi (logmein) creates a secure connection between computers by talking with the hamachi servers - this is neat because it retains the connection even if the IP changes (well, obviously, it re-establishes the connection if it changes)...as part of your private hamachi network, you can see who's online and even chat with them through the clientusing a VNC program (i prefer ultravnc, personally), you connect via the hamachi address (obviously, you need to have hamachi running as well)...the VNC program is what actually allows you to get onto their computer and see what's going on
5/21/2008 11:44:09 AM
^ see i used to do all that. but decided that logmein was easier...especially if you're trying to get someone else to set it up to give you access to their pc
5/21/2008 11:47:28 AM
aha...i haven't really used logmein, just hamachi itself...d'oh
5/21/2008 11:58:24 AM
http://www.thewolfweb.com/message_topic.aspx?topic=521759&page=1#11478613i still use both hamachi & logmein (and have RDP setup as alternative)a) hamachi & SFTP for secure file transfersb) logmein for easy, zero-config, remote access.
5/21/2008 12:10:17 PM
well i will try it since its free and see how it works.
5/21/2008 12:11:49 PM
Ok this worked PERFECTLY.THANKS!
5/21/2008 2:50:49 PM
^ you can also use MSN messenger, it has a 'share my desktop' feature for troubleshooting peoples desktops
5/21/2008 5:33:19 PM
ok so what's the consensus on the best remote software for easy access, little router config on a vista machine? How easy is it to access a vista machine on an xp machine?
6/18/2008 11:54:24 AM
hamachi/logmein and ultravnc?
6/18/2008 11:57:30 AM
^that doesn't make any sense.i'd say hamachi + RDP (or VNC of choice)(xp & vista work fine together on this so long as you have xp SP3 w/ RDC 6.0 installed)or logmein which is web-based.[Edited on June 18, 2008 at 12:04 PM. Reason : better? ]
6/18/2008 12:00:05 PM
^ i don't like RDP*shrug*
6/18/2008 12:01:28 PM
yea, ultraVNC is fine as an alternative.what i was talking about not making sense, was that hamachi and logmein don't do the same thing, so it's either hamachi & ultraVNC -or- logmein. but you don't use hamachi with logmein, logmein does it's own tunneling/encryption.
6/18/2008 12:03:27 PM
^ i didn't mean it like that, but you're right, it really doesn't make sense the way i put it
6/18/2008 12:28:43 PM
so which one could i also use on my windows mobile cell phone? i guess whichever one is web based.
6/18/2008 1:08:49 PM
^ i can't say that it really works on your phone, but logmein is web-based, so i guess that's your only option
6/18/2008 1:17:32 PM
I put Hamachi on every machine I use, enables me to quickly connect to them without having to worry about IPs or firewalls, etc. It's also great for having a permanent tunnel setup with my laptop to browse the internet from my house connection when I'm in a public place. The only traffic a Wifi connection sees from me is all encrypted traffic, that's how I like it.This also includes any family computers I'm asked to fix. That way when there is a problem and they are connected to the internet, I don't have to worry about how I'm going to connect to their computer.Hamachi works on XP/Vista, Linux, OSX ... Then use a VNC variant for desktop control.[Edited on June 18, 2008 at 1:49 PM. Reason : .]

Just got realvnc up and running. I was surprised i didn't have any trouble with vista 64. Posting at work from my desktop at home now. [Edited on July 14, 2008 at 8:43 AM. Reason : ..]

putty + xwin over ssh
7/14/2008 11:49:02 AM
using realvnc now. It's not too laggy after disabling the background, and unchecking "use best color". Pretty much any remote desktop software is limited by the upload the isp gives you right? Do some just render better than others?[Edited on July 14, 2008 at 3:43 PM. Reason : .]

Noenis there anyway to do a full desktop in remote desktop? I have 2 24"s and using realvnc i can get a full 3840 by 1200 on my 1600 by 1200 at work (lets me slide to the left or right). But on normal remote desktop it just scales everything to 1600 by 1200 and messes up my windows and stuff. I want to keep the native resolution and keep all my windows where they are no matter the viewer screen resolution.
7/14/2008 4:18:19 PM
in rdp options, set a static resolution
7/14/2008 7:07:32 PM
^it only goes up to 1600 by 1200 (the size of the monitor). I want my 1600 by 1200 monitor at work to show the complete (able to slide-pan) 3840 by 1200 resolution i have on my home desktop. Realvnc does this by default.
7/14/2008 7:17:42 PM
setup up tightvnc server on my media box tonight, can get to it from my dell, my wife's macbook, and my iphone. sweet

I use tunnelblick for openVPN on the mac...(that is for accessing a VPN for work)as far as personal access to my home computer I use "back to my mac" with mobileme. Easiest setup and software to use. I am impressed with apple on this one...

been using logmein for about 2 years. have it installed on all my close relatives' computers. never had a problem yet and it is easy to use. Love the part where you can get on any random computer and remote it a computer in almost no time.
