650 is a good bike, and they appear to handle being layed down well, and seem pretty easy to work on.

in response to the question before... yes, completion of the safety course takes the place of the driving course for your endorsement

Quick question.
To get a learner permit, do you need to how up and ride, or do they just give you one.
Same question for the endorsement, do you have to ride a motorcycle for them?

what?

for a permit you just take a written test

for the full endorsement you have to do a driving test where you go through some cones

^^ learner's permit is just a written test, and if i remember correctly, there are a few questions that have kinda dubious answers (like one i remember that deals with which way to turn the bars, say, for a left turn--the answer they want--left--is incorrect for any speed above, ohh, 20 mph or so...)

but whatever, if you have any brains at all, you'll get a passing score on the test.

license involves riding test around cones in a parking lot (i.e., you could pass it and still be completely incompetant to ride a motorcycle, especially with a passenger. tight turns at 10 mph aren't a sportbike's happy place, though.)

A Tuna was my first bike older body style. It took alot of abuse and always ran great. The older ones I think are better looking not so much of a bubble and you can find them somewhat cheap also.

Read and study http://www.ncdot.org/dmv/driver_services/motorcyclists/motorcyclehandbook/download/MotoHandbook.pdf and you will be fine for your permit.

Ha ha considering mine was mowed down by a truck and I was still able to ride it with a cracked frame and broken shifter

But besides that... The oil is REALLY easy to change.. Its a naked bike so all its private parts are exposed!

there is no fucking way i would ride a motorcycle with a cracked frame.

also, if it was cracked, i can't imagine that it wasn't also bent.

anything other than bone stock paint is code for "wrecked". that isn't a deal breaker, but something you should be aware of.

make sure the gears shift smoothly. i blew up 2nd gear in a YZF-600 transmission one time (common problem).

That's not a problem, they designed it for you to speed shift from 1st to 3rd...

A ninja 250 is a great starter bike. I have never heard of anybody that was too big for one. Maybe if you're really friggin huge it might feel cramped. But definietly a lot better than the Rebel. A GS500/550 would be great if you could find one.

If you start on a GSXR, Hayabusa, R6, R1, or any other 600cc+ super-sport, just make sure you fill out your organ donor card. Those are not starter bikes and can almost never be used to their full potential on anything but a track. Especially not legally on the roads.

Btw, if anyone is selling a 250-600cc bike (besides those super sport types I just mentioned), let me know.

i'm actually interested myself in a bike (especially with gas prices getting the way they are).

I weigh about 215lbs, and i'm not looking for something that's gonna make sonic booms, but I also want to be able to make it up avent ferry.

Ideally i'd like to spend under 2g's for the first (learner) bike, which I'm sure will get laid down once or twice- also, at this point, i'd prefer a cruiser style to the crotch rocket

aaaaand go...

I probably wouldn't get a Rebel 250 or anything, but other than that, they'll all have plenty of power for you. Maybe something like a Shadow 600 would be the ticket.

and good call on staying $2k or below for your first bike.

Look, I've probably forgotten more about being hard than you'll ever know, so let's not start down that road. I'm also pretty confident based on things you've said in this thread that you don't know dick about riding motorcycles, so why don't you leave the advice giving to those of us who have a fucking clue, squid?

How old is too old? Could something from the 80s be trusted? Is there a way to verify it isn't going to completely crap out 10miles after you get it home?

Dual-sports are good to learn on. Try a suzuki drz 400. Aswwesome bikes and tons of aftermarket performance goodies are easily available.

Heh, more than half of the garage regulars can school your ass on a bike, even Jamie. Lets see your lap time on the north course. Shit, I bet Duke could get a faster lap time when it's wet outside then you when it's dry.

maybe not right at the moment...haven't ridden recently. after a couple of months back on a sportbike, I'm sure I could.

I've owned 3 bikes. The last one was a GSX-R 750. I've probably ridden 15-20 different motorcycles, to include a couple liter class machines. I think the most fun motorcycle I've ever ridden was an R6, and plan to step back down to a 600 for my next bike (at most a "cheater" 600 like a Kaw 636 or a Daytona 675). I very well might get an SV-650 or something for a season just to expedite getting my riding skills back up to speed and do it on the cheap.

I'm just guessing, but I bet Bman thinks 18 inch swing arm extensions and shit loads of chrome are the first mods that should be added to every sportbike, followed shortly by lowering links and underglow. Give me a fucking break dude, if you can get tired of a modern 600 on the streets, you're doing it wrong.

all I have heard from guys is that you get the bike you want and it is only as fast and dangerous as you make it.
