I have a friend from overseas coming to visit in july and we are planning to do a whirlwind tour of the outer banks. We plan to spend 5-7 days between topsail/wrightsville and then head up to the outer banks. I was thinking about spending one night in Beaufort with my cousin since it is a free place to stay and she has been on my case about not visiting. Then i wanted to make my way up to Ocracoke either via cape lookout or cedar island ferry. I was thinking about just spending the day/afternoon on the island and then heading over to Hatteras and up to NH/KH/KDH. Is it feasible to go from Beaufort to Ocracoke to NH in one day? We were planning to find a place to stay the night in the NH area if thats possible but we'd be open to staying elsewhere.

The ferry to Ocracoke is like 2 or 2.5 hours from Cedar Island. Once you get to Ocracoke the drive isn't bad but you have to be careful because there is another short ferry somewhere between Ocracoke and Hatteras (30 mins or so) so you have to make sure you get there near a departure time. I've done the trip from Ocracoke to NH before and I don't remember it being that bad.

all points north of corolla to the va line ftw.^^it's definitely possible to do that in a day easy with plenty of time left to find a place to stay/eat a decent dinner around nags head. i've done from swan beach to emerald isle all in one go, but it was a pretty long day by the time you factored in the ferry rides. i would just suggest to get an early start and timing yourself to get to the cedar island/ocracoke ferries ~30 minutes before departure time. a good chunk of the drive, such as through the pea island reserve, there isn't much to stop and see/do unless you just like wandering around on deserted beaches. most of the "tourist" type stuff you'll find on ocracoke/southern hatteras and from the nags head area on north.[Edited on June 15, 2009 at 11:26 PM. I would say for the Ocracoke ferry since you are going in the summer, get a reservation. You would hate to show up for the ferry and be told there wasn't a spot for you. Cedar Island only runs 8 times a day in summer I think.

leaving in about an hour for nags head. could be our last year down there (at this house, i mean). our house is for sale. my grandmother is too old and apparently property taxes and insurance, etc have gone way way way up. i don't know, i haven't really investigated this is just what i've been told.does anyone want to buy it and still let me come for free? http://www.buchanancottage.com/General_Info.htmlluckily it is a bad time for real estate so maybe it will still be on the market next year and i will get to go again. i'm just sad. my grandmother grew up here, my mom grew up here, i spent a lot of my summers here. it is super sad. Holy crap that's a huge nice beachfront house! I can imagine you'd be upset about losing that. However, your family will probably be rolling in cash once it sells...
6/18/2009 12:00:36 PM
^^ oh shit! i know where that is. those houses are so nice. i wish i had the money to buy it, but i'm going to come up waaaaaaaaay short there.
6/18/2009 12:11:17 PM
^^ well not me specifically so it doesn't matter haha. plus it gets split up a lot of different ways i don't even understand the ownership/breakdown. except that none belongs to moi. ^ really! yea i like it. those houses are just so cool because they're all old. a lot of history. you should hear my grandma talk about it. but yea, when i was little i hoped when they sold it i'd be rich enough to buy it. HAHAHA. i didn't even know how much it was until just now when i looked at that site. i'm assuming that even if i had a "real" job, i wouldn't even be able to afford the property taxes on it. what a rip. the only people that have been looking at it apparently are people from new jersey - gross. i hope they are particular about who they sell it to. although if you wanna keep it on the natl register of historical places you have to follow rules right? i hope no one tears it down. i might die if they did that.

Anyone have recommendations for a place to stay between Ocracoke and the NH/KH/Manteo area for one night a week from saturday?

manteo seemed like a neat place to staycute little b&bs ftw!

I had no idea the Crystal Coast was referred to as the Southern Outer Banks. Sounds like some shit the marketers there came up with to get people to come.I'm in Duck right now and I don't get the hate from the first page. The traffic through Duck wasn't any more annoying than getting stopped by every other light while driving on 158 through KH/KDH/NH. At least here in Duck you can people watch those running/walking/riding on the sidewalk.I did the Wright Memorial and Jockey's ridge today. I kinda wish I could put on a little parachute and jump far enough off one of the ridge to float down (poor mans hang glider).

how many people are you gonna have? You can get some incredible deals on rental homes right now, especially on Hatteras Island.I'll be working up in Duck tonight on Olde Duck Dr. Driven through Duck at least twice a day every day lately.

it going to be me and one other. Unfortunately the timing of our trip puts us in that area for one night (perhaps two) during the weekend. Not exactly what I wanted but i have to deal with it.Bed and Breakfasts sound great, any suggestions?

Anybody have any golf course recommendations in the KH, KDH, NH area? Looking for something relatively cheap, but fun.
8/8/2009 2:24:29 PM
Cheap, you'll have to go to Currituck (10-30 minutes away). Seascape is the cheapest in the immediate area, then Nags Head Golf Links, then Duck Woods (if you can get in). Holly Ridge, Kilmarlic, The Pointe, Carolina Club, and Goose Creek are the courses I can think of in lower Currituck.
8/8/2009 3:00:05 PM
Thanks man. I checked the rates at a few of those places, and Holly Ridge looks like a winner. You can ride 9 for $37. Seascape's Twilight rate for 18 is pretty good too ($65).

Going to Nags Head this weekend.I've been going for years and I can't believe I've never been to OBX Brewing....definitely gonna check that out. I always end up at Kelly's for the bar scene, but that's a little too much oontz-oontz music for me usually. Lots of hot sluts though. We're gonna go to the Bluez & Brewz Festival in Manteo on Sunday
