funny how people love to jump all over others for any sort of positive correlation of ideas with regards to slaverynot positive about slavery but positive about corresponding ideas, concepts and perceptions ( and yes not all of them, durr)

How did you guys feel about part III? I know this is supposed to be centered on Adams, but i felt as though the war itself was too lightly mentioned. I think there needed to be a little more there, even if it had to be on Abigail's end. Adams wouldn't have been able to know much going on with word travelling so slowly. I thought they did a great job showing how different the two cultures were and even though Franklin tried to explain it to John I felt almost angry at B.F. Seeing the previews from last night, part IV looks like it could very well be the best in the series
3/24/2008 12:02:14 PM
I agree that the war wasn't mentioned enough. All of a sudden it was like "BAM! Cornwallace surrendered." I was like .All in all this episode frustrated me even though it was very well done. I didn't like how the war wasn't mentioned enough, the French pissed me off and all of John Adams troubles got to me.
3/24/2008 12:25:03 PM
I couldn't imagine being john adams when he was facing the dutchmasters. Knowing your country relies on their help but not having the credit, yet, to gain their trust.
3/24/2008 12:44:23 PM
I thought part 3 was SLOW!!!!
3/24/2008 1:31:28 PM
I just watched the first two last night and loved it, got the third on my computer and will watch it after the gym.You guys think this will spin off other, similar series?
3/24/2008 1:32:47 PM
^yes, Grover Cleveland is already in production [Edited on March 24, 2008 at 1:47 PM. Reason : i kid, i kid]
3/24/2008 1:39:04 PM
Well, it's not exactly a spin-off, but last year Leo Dicaprio's production comapny was working on a film about the Young Teddy Roosevelt based in large part on David McCullough's biography "Morning on Horseback" (really good book).
3/24/2008 2:18:55 PM
at first I was skeptical of this mini-series, but after giving it a shot, I think it's incredible.this last episode was great with the depiction of traveling the Atlantic and also the way they showcased the life of the French aristocracy during that time. it was hilarious the way Adams didn't fit into their culture and was so hellbent on his cause that he made no real attempt to try.
3/24/2008 4:30:48 PM
^pretty much exactly how it was, ben franklin pimped it in france, much to adams displeasure...saw the first episode last night (no hd on demand TW? fail, total fail)dvr'ed the hd version of the 3rd one, will watch #2 and #3 sometime friday probably, depends on how busy i get...
3/27/2008 7:59:35 AM
I think not following the war shows exactly how out of the loop Adams was, and how far removed he was from the actual fighting.Obviously it was supposed to be that way.
3/27/2008 8:51:09 AM
i don't care what othes might say about this series....its qualityit might be right up there in the league of Band of Brothers...if they don't mess it up towards the endoh, and after looking at the complete cast...there is no cast for the north carolina delegate in episode 2 i knew it sounded dubbed in for some reason[Edited on March 27, 2008 at 11:18 AM. Reason : .]
3/27/2008 11:12:55 AM
^^ If I remember correctly from my US history courses, Adams pretty much spent most of the war overseas lobbying European governments to support the American rebellion. Supposedly he eventually did get those loans from the Netherlands.
3/27/2008 11:35:04 AM
yeah, his wife actually ends up moving out there with him and they have a kid over there.
3/27/2008 12:19:11 PM
I wouldnt begin to put this on par with band of brothers.
3/27/2008 2:23:48 PM
the 45 degree camera shot is embarrassing[Edited on March 29, 2008 at 11:45 PM. Reason : hahaha NC dubbed in twice]
3/29/2008 11:19:24 PM
not the best episode, imo. next week looks a lot better.
3/31/2008 8:44:38 AM
could have done without the love scene.
3/31/2008 9:04:29 AM
40 seconds of passion... it was pretty good i thought, not as good as the first 3 but still pretty good
3/31/2008 12:11:59 PM
That episode was BORING.
3/31/2008 12:22:26 PM
i enjoyed it. there is so much said in the things that aren't said. His reactions and mannerisms are great. And when he returned home, not even recognizing his youngest son, wow. Those interactions and dynamics were great. And then near the end, up on his pedistal ranting about his new position..It really displayed how vain and centered he could be at times
3/31/2008 12:27:14 PM
I suppose I was just really frustrated b/c it seems like he whispers almost the entire episode, ugh.
3/31/2008 12:31:23 PM
when John Quincy said the girl he was courting was 15 i was like EWW DUDE SICK but then i was like LOL 1800s FTW LOL
3/31/2008 12:46:29 PM
how old was he supposed to be then? 17?
3/31/2008 12:59:31 PM
A:How old are you?B:15A:18!B:MoooooomA:I like where this is goingA:Allllriiiiight
3/31/2008 1:02:15 PM
^^earlier in that episode when abigail and john were with jefferson he mentioned not disturbing JQ b/c he was at Harvard. It was several years later when they returned to the US so I suspected he was early 20's. But i could be wrong.
3/31/2008 1:04:49 PM
Yeah, I kinda wish they'd flash the year every once in awhile. As someone mentioned before, HBO likes to skip to different periods without telling you
3/31/2008 1:41:07 PM
yeah, and i can understand that they'd want you to witness the passing of years through the change in style/dress/hair color/age/etc...but without looking at a history book i personnally don't know when Washington became president or when Adams returned to america. so yes, a few date flashes now and then wouldn't take away from the feel of the series.
3/31/2008 1:49:36 PM
basically the best thing on TV right nowHBO constantly puts out quality stuff
4/1/2008 2:17:06 PM
they also went to harvard younger then too
4/1/2008 2:47:45 PM
^not because i'm trying to show you up, but b/c i was genuinely curious myself...this is from wikipedia.JQ Adams Born 7-11-1767
4/1/2008 3:37:58 PM
ahhh well there you go john adams and abigal met when she was ~15 and he was ~24 so.......[Edited on April 1, 2008 at 3:52 PM. Reason : parents relative, common practice as a result?]

4/1/2008 3:52:26 PM
as much as i love the miniseries
4/7/2008 2:51:42 PM
I loved the quarreling between Hamilton and Jefferson. I thought it was very well done
4/7/2008 3:10:00 PM
yeah, i was digging that episode. the dialog totally makes up for the lack of action. I'm getting more and more interested in Thomas Jefferson with every episode. I'm toying with the idea of getting one of his biographies b/c there seems to be more to that man than you see in history books and family guy jokes.
4/7/2008 4:17:02 PM
ps, it is believed that it was his brother that fathered the children with the slave woman not jefferson himself, he has many writings about the commonality of man but like any distinguished educated mind he thought with the common ideas of the day which were that the negro was somewhat a lesser specimen of man, and should not exactly have the same rights. he still did not fully agree with the very idea of slavery but he wasn't incredibly against it as well.his brother, Randolf, was much wilder. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Randolph_Jefferson
4/8/2008 12:37:12 AM
I was cracking up when Abigail Adams was reading the newspaper's description of her husband. The hermaphrodite explanation was particularly creative.
4/14/2008 12:05:35 AM
final episode next week
4/14/2008 7:14:44 AM
was it just me or was John Adams kinda scary looking in this episode?I do like, however, how they've shown the decline of his teeth throughout the series. Good miniseries, but its time to end. What i'm not sure i'm fond of is HBO's decision to start airing movie premieres on sunday instead of saturday now.
4/14/2008 8:29:34 AM
bttwhy does everyone have to die?
4/20/2008 9:34:52 PM
Good god I hope I go out in a blaze of glory.
4/20/2008 10:03:51 PM
Was that supposed to be Sally Hemmings?
4/20/2008 10:35:15 PM
finally watched the last episodedamn sad.
4/23/2008 6:33:41 PM
This turned out to be a pretty mediocre show by HBO standards
4/30/2008 12:41:53 AM
It did seem to fall off, but lets be serious. Adams served 4 years and then kind of faded into the annals of american history. So it was fitting, but somewhat disappointing, that the final few episodes did the same.
4/30/2008 7:59:44 AM
I just started watching this (on episode IV right now) but I'm very disappointed with the series so far. Production is top notch but I honestly the story is not resonating well with me (especially on Abigail's end). I also know that we are seeing America through mostly John Adams view but I hated not seeing anything on the war itself.
6/14/2008 2:36:39 PM
Has anyone in this thread read the book this is based on? My parents just bought it for me and I'm going to read it but I wanted an idea of whether or not this is good (like as good as 1776)
