i happen to like rich results for nowwent to fill out my time sheet at work today and instead of having to go to bookmarks i just type time sheet in the url field and bam it is upi dont know why everybody has such a problem with it
3/14/2008 7:35:21 PM
yeah i think its awesome
3/14/2008 7:42:56 PM
^^
3/14/2008 8:06:46 PM
i didn't mean the feature was a flaw, i meant not having the ability to disable it was a flawand quite frankly i think the results i receive are irrelevant to what i'm typing.
3/14/2008 10:15:04 PM
^ agreed. when i start typing "you" in my url bar, i expect to see "youtube.com" as a result, not "Facebook: Your Notifications" (the title of a page, matched "Your"). adding features is great, but when that feature takes away or drastically changes something people are used to, that is a mistake.
3/14/2008 11:42:10 PM
yea more often than not i have to type MORE than i did before to get whatever im looking for to pop up near the top. other than that feature i love the current beta

does anyone else think the new Downloads window looks like shit, at least in Windows Classic Theme or Windows 2000?Here's the FF2 download manager. No big deal, it generally works. I guess it could use a search bar, but i dunno, but at least it looks fineHere FF3b4. WTF?1) it looks terrible. The removed the border, change the font to way too big, removed padding around the cells, added unnecessary zebra stripes, removed the "grabber" lines in the lower right corner, changed the "currently selected" highlight from a pleasant light blue-gray to an overpowering dark blue. just terrible decisions all around as far as aesthetics2) they decreased functionality. Removed the handy "clean up" button, removed the Open and Remove links from each item (still accessible via right-click or double-click, but the links were handy), added a questionably-useful search bar. bad decisions all around for this aspecti do like the updated Add-ons manager. Fortunately, whoever made the design updates to this window didn't remove the padded-border and change all the fonts like they did to the Downloads manager. I really like having the add-ons search built-in and ready access to all the plugins. I think there should be a persistent "Restart FireFox" button at the bottom of the Add-ons window (or maybe as an item in Tools), instead of a toolbar that pops up (and sometimes disappears) after you make a change. Of course, ideally you wouldn't have to restart FireFox, and extensions and themes could be added/changed on the fly like in Opera

as I look at it some more, i think maybe with the Downloads manager they were trying to go for a borderless mac/safari-look. This is the Safari downloads manager. Simple, elegant, to the point. Not overflowing with functionality, but it gets the job done and it looks good. If this is what the FF team was striving for, they failed miserably
3/15/2008 12:35:33 PM
ok, one more thing. I just installed FF3b4 on the Mac, and it looks quite nice, except for the back/forward button.... looks like the Vista theme. I think they could and should emulate Safari for the Nav bar. But anyway, the Downloads Manager for the Mac version is a near-identical clone of Safari, which confirms my suspiciion they they were trying to imiate Safari for the Windows version as well. The problem, though, is that Windows does now allow you to make nice-looking borderless windows like Mac does, and the font-shaping and cell shading is not nearly as good. Here's Mac FF3b4 Downloads manager. Beautiful, only lacking a "Clear" button like Safari and FF2

Looks great in Vista:[Edited on March 15, 2008 at 1:10 PM. Reason : .]
3/15/2008 12:56:39 PM
hmm, yeah. looks like they're optimizing the interface for Vista and OS X, and that is leading to some short comings in XP, XP+Classic Theme (how I always run XP because i hate the bubbly blue and sliver themes) or 2000 (which unfortunately we still run at my work)
3/15/2008 2:45:17 PM
For XP, I'd recommend the System5 theme, it's professional and crisp, and doesn't look like crap.http://andymorum.deviantart.com/art/System-5-20568306

I might show extreme ignorance here, but does anyone remember way back when you could add your own quick search to the URL bar?For instance typing 'slang blumpkin' would instantly take you to urbandictionary. or 'dict brevity' to webster's. Then you could take http://ultimate-guitar.com/search.php?s=the+knife&w=bands and add the trigger 'tab' and from then on use that one. Did this feature get removed or is it just hidden now? The url bar now just seems to make google toolbar redundant.
3/15/2008 10:33:54 PM
^ you have to make a "quick search bookmark" - FF won't do it for you automatically. To create a quick search bookmark, make a new bookmark with the URL of a query, but substitute %s for the actual query. e.g. http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=%sthen the bookmark properties, give the bookmark a Keyword, like 'u' or 'ud'. Then in the address bar, type the Keyword then a space then the query, and it will do the query for you. e.g. ud donkey punchI just checked and it still works in the new beta
3/16/2008 8:01:09 AM
I've always just right clicked on the search box, and clicked 'add a keyword for this search'type in the name of the site, and the keyword, and firefox does the rest automatically.
3/16/2008 8:07:05 AM
ah, if you select "Use Small Icons" for the Mac version you get much better back/forward buttonsDefault:Small Icons:
3/16/2008 10:44:31 AM
how is that any better?
3/16/2008 11:16:47 AM
3/16/2008 12:36:59 PM
^^ umm, they're not unnecessarily large and gratuitous?
3/16/2008 12:41:17 PM
I love 3.4b but I hate rich resultsdecisions, decisions
3/17/2008 12:41:12 AM
for all you richresults haters, https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/6227was updated for 3.0b4i just tested it and it works somewhat - it still lists the titles of pages that match what you're typing before the URLs that match what you're typing (it basically just made the rich results fit in one line by removing the page title)i don't really care either way - my Bookmarks Toolbar is mostly all I need. i rarely type in URLs manually - mostly copy/paste or click-throughs from another link i'm on.edit:oh and agentlion, i don't know how you could survive without the download statusbar extension[Edited on March 19, 2008 at 4:39 PM. my b4 is totally screwed up.i type www, it gives me the same single URLi type anything, it gives me the same single URLi clear ALL the history, privacy settings... close firefox, re-open, and STILL gives me the same single URL for a site i visited like a week ago now.i never get more than a single URLcrazy messed up.
3/19/2008 5:11:24 PM
start a new profile?
3/19/2008 5:17:50 PM
just installed it today for work purposes and i'm really liking it so far. (at least all my shit works!)I'm using it on a Mac and the browser UI is pretty neat. Not sure if the PC version has the same 'look' or not.
3/19/2008 11:59:32 PM
i like it quite a bit on the os x side though i'm sticking with safari for the time being (and they just updated it to 3.1)... this new ff beta is tempting tho; until now there's no way i would have considered ff over it. i haven't checked, but i wonder if ff 3.4b is rocking the new css features that saf 3.1 is
3/20/2008 12:04:53 AM
anyone else have the bug where certain tabs get "stuck" and refuse to close? you can browse around all you want in them - even to a different site but the tab name will remain the same always (the place it got "stuck" at, and you can't close it)

3/27/2008 2:05:04 PM
"ship" in June? does that mean they are now sending out CD's it's not like it's an RTM release or anything...
3/27/2008 2:07:42 PM
^^ here's the source of that theme, along with another one very similar but with some slight differences (like the tab bar) http://www.takebacktheweb.org/I installed GrApple Yummy and was very impressed. Unless you know specifically what to look for, it could easily pass as a Safari clone.

i still fucking hate the rich results. can you disable it yet ?
3/27/2008 5:12:11 PM
I have had good luck with the Firefox beta. But, like a lot of you, I really dislike the rich results. It's not that there's anything there that I'm afraid anyone will see - it just looks too big or something. Mostly just an aesthetic thing, I guess.
3/27/2008 5:35:29 PM
well i installed oldbar or whatever addon/about:config setting changes it back to ff2, but the search sucks and it's never the site I'm trying to type. Hell, most of the time i'm over halfway done typing the URL before the one i want is displayed. Give me regular autocomplete, I don't care if whatever ingenious new search tool you're trying to force on everyone is better.
3/28/2008 9:06:43 AM
when i'm typing a url, rich results usually displays TWW first. i find it humorous.
3/28/2008 9:16:07 AM
