a supercharged S2k is fun.

but in all honesty, there is no need for one. you'll be running same lap times as anyone else

my S2000 was perfectly reliable over 35k hard, supercharged miles (bought it at 35k, sold at about 70k). never had anything go wrong with it except that I had the rear axle nuts tightened to the updated factory spec to stop the clunking (I had the dealer do it after I snapped a 1/2" breaker bar trying to do it myself).

oh, and I blew an aftermarket stereo amp.

yeah, mine probably hit 9k numerous times almost every day.

"it sounds like a leaf blower inside the cabin with the roof up
small trunk
small interior
gas mileage isn't very good
the soft top makes for decent sized blind spots
tires are gone in ~10k miles
old ones burn oil
body style hasn't been updated in 8 years
high power band making it more frequent for you to money shift blowing up your engine
no low end torque, even when "Stroked" to 2.2L Lawlllll
seats fit in a civic , so vandalism ++
weak back end that blows up
no traction control , for in the rain
paper thin door skins , dent when looked at funny
weighs more than a miata
you have to manually unlatch both sides of the roof before it will lower"

almost all of these things are true, but I didn't care about any of them except that I thought it was too heavy. Mine didn't burn an appreciable amount of oil (even supercharged), and I didn't think the wind noise was that loud (although my Comptech exhaust might've kinda drowned it out).

a stronger drivetrain (mainly rear diff) would be nice, but again, mine was supercharged and I drove it pretty hard, and never had rear diff problems. There's no point in doing hard launches with an S2000, anyway--even supercharged, it is NOT the car's strong suit.

"As much as I love my S, I would not recommend it for a daily. I've had extremely good reliability with mine and I beat the hell out of it. However, even in good times it is not a cheap car to drive due to fuel and tire costs. If she just wants a cute roadster, honestly I'd say get a Miata. Cheaper to buy, cheaper to run, equal reliability.

"

agreed here, too, except that I think an S2000 is more than acceptable as a daily driver. I DD'd mine for 2 years, including multiple trips between Raleigh and NoVA and FL.

miatas are great little sports cars.

my S2000 chewed through expensive tires at the cyclic rate, though.

you can buy in for way, way, way less than $60k. Like, closer to half that for a clean lightly used one...and substantially less than that even brand new.

agree, more or less. you will be faster than a stock one either around a circuit or in a straight line, but not nearly as much faster as you'd think with 110-130 extra horsepower.

I've thought about getting another S2000. I wouldn't pay what it costs to supercharge one--after owning one, I don't think it's worth the price of admission to do it yourself. However, every now and then you can catch a screaming deal on one that's already been supercharged (which, incidentally, is how I ended up with my first one). If you're patient enough, you can find a good SC'd example for only a little more than a stocker.

this is all academic, of course, as your wife has no business with and probably no desire for a supercharged S2k. Personally, I would have no qualms with buying a 75k car, as long as I got a good enough deal on it.

by the way, when did the improved gearshift come for the S2k? The original one was the best I'd ever seen, then they made it even better! Did it come before the AP2 redesign as an intermediate change (I would prefer this--I would like an AP1 with the screamer engine and more aggressive suspension, but the updated gearshift).

I'm pretty sure it came with the AP2 "redesign" Duke. whoever mentioned crunching gears: If you're grinding gears in an S2000 than you pretty much suck period. Its pretty well documented that the S2000 has the best gear shifter out there.

Tires can last a while if driven conservatively. My dad's got almost 20k on his so far.

202k miles on my 97 Z3 (2.8 inline 6). Still running strong (just knocked on wood). I would touch the 4 cylinder Z3 with a ten foot pole, however (with high miles).

^^ i like BMW gearshifts

but not as much as an S2000's. the AP1 is the 2nd best gearshift I've ever seen. The AP2 has the best.

and 20k miles on a set of tires would've been a miracle when I had my S2000. I usually got 10k-12k. Never even CLOSE to 20k.

10-12 on just the rears, or 10-12 on the set. pay to play applies as always, it would suck to buy tires every 9 months. but it would suck worse to drive around in a pos civic

^^ Bah, my "POS Civic" got 39mpg on the last tank, driving from Chapel Hill to Johnson City, TN through the mountains and all. I love my S2000, but my Civic definitely wins for my weekly road trips, lol.

^

I just filled up and got 43mpg in my POS civic. That counts the gas i spilled on the road thinking the gas pump lost its mind when it clicked off at 8 gallons .

Tires in an s2k last about 12k miles. I can confirm this with a couple wear bar rear tires >.< .

It's pretty damn rough. It's about as bad as a vw gear box.

I drove a brand new Z4 through an autocross course several times and the damn shift knob came off in my hand numerous times. F that.

Well there's an easy fix, don't pull up on the shift knob...
