The max of 240 hours applies to carrying vacation leave over to the next year. If you have more than 240 hours at the end of the year, the surplus is converted to sick leave. The purpose of this is to keep you from accruing so much leave that if you quit they can't afford to pay it out. Regardless, if you take a vacation or two a year, you shouldn't have much trouble keeping it under 240 hours.

There's annual (vacation) leave, sick leave, comp time, "other", and bonus leave.Annual/vacation is capped at 240. Hours over 240 convert to sick leave. No explanations needed there, right?EPA employees cannot earn comp time; exempt SPA and SPA can. SPAs accrue comp by working overtime with supervisory approval. Comp time expires in a year and must be used before then. There are a few other types of leave you can take, e.g. community service. You can donate blood or volunteer time to a non-profit charity or a school for up to 24 hours a year. There's a separate category for mentoring a young person.Bonus leave is awarded for various reasons but is not counted towards the 240 cap for annual leave, and it does not expire. If you accrue a ton of leave you can use it to retire early.Note: I don't speak officially for University HR. Maybe it depends what kind of employee you are. I know a few postdocs that have had leave expire though. They may be classified differently though or the policy may have changed in the last few years. I'm not sure.
