Within six months, someone will bring a phone to market with parental lockout on the camera functions.

I bet you can already do that on most phones if you bother to read the fucking manual that comes with your phone.
3/3/2008 2:40:53 PM
Dude, bathroom monitors? Seriously? Do you have any concept of how fast those kids would catch swirlies and ass-beatings?
3/3/2008 2:41:27 PM
[Edited on March 3, 2008 at 2:42 PM. Reason : just put cameras in the bathrooms...]
3/3/2008 2:41:43 PM
Yeah, but if you're a bathroom monitor and you see pants around the ankles would you think anything unusual was going on? You couldn't tell if they were sitting or standing, couldn't tell what was going on with their shirt, etc. Just set the camera sound to: none and it's virtually undetectable.
3/3/2008 2:42:59 PM
And P.S. yo, kids can take pictures anywhere. And with most phones, you can send 'em to anywhere from anywhere.
3/3/2008 2:44:19 PM

Being a better idea is not the same as being a good idea. Were you ever a kid? I mean, damn. Kids have been taking cell phones to school since I was in high school. This is first time I've ever heard of something like this, and there were kids with Polaroids doing the same shit for a long time before this. And you're talking about putting spies in the damn bathroom?
3/3/2008 2:58:38 PM
How about you allow the bathrooms to go unmonitored and deal with the fact that shit like this is going to happen? The best a school can do is implement a no cell phones, cameras, pdas, laptops, etc. on your person during school hours (7-3). All electronic equipment must be kept in your locker until school is over. I'm pretty sure most schools already have a similar rule. You can't stop everything, and further rules, laws, monitoring, etc. aren't going to do much either. You do the best you can to keep stuff like this from happening on school grounds, but you can't stop horny kids from being horny kids.[Edited on March 3, 2008 at 3:00 PM. Reason : asdfasd]

This mug is gonna hand out tickets for chewing gum in class.
3/3/2008 3:00:50 PM
the way i see it, a designated person (not necessarily a student) per bathroom/locker room would be tolerable as opposed to a no cellphone/pager/camera/ipod/psp rule. the monitor would be helpful in stopping kids from getting dunked in toilets/fights involving throwing the other kid into the fixtures/smoking etc. i think kids should be able to have their cell phones in case they are kidnapped/need a lift after school/tell their parents where they are etc. but just like computers/tvs at home, they should be restricted to legitimate uses via parental controls.
3/3/2008 3:15:10 PM
I don't necessarily disagree with that, but my point is that I don't think having a teacher in the bathroom would have stopped this from happening nor is it likely to keep future incidents like this one happening. Unless you want a bunch of lawsuits and teachers being accused of sexual misconduct you're probably best off keeping the stall doors closed, the locker room showers unmonitored, etc.You do the best you can, but you can't and shouldn't stop everything. A little bit of misconduct and rebelliousness is good for the soul.

If you hire someone new to monitor bathrooms, that's $$ school systems can't afford. If you make the teachers do it, you're going to get a lot of complaints because they're already overworked and underpaid. If you make the students do it, they'll get their asses kicked. Basically marginal cost/benefit. It costs a lot one way or another to staff every school bathroom in the country, and that would keep, what, 10 cases like this from happening per year? 1,000? I really have no idea how often this happens, but I doubt it's enough to really get people to support bathroom monitors in every school bathroom. And even if there are monitors in every bathroom, there's always under the stairs, the boiler room, etc.

At my job we have a policy of no cellphones on or in use during school day on kids. They are not allowed to keep them anywhere but their backpack. People don't want them to be using them, but parents want them to have them in case a Columbine situation comes up.As for cameras or monitors in the bathroom, thats ridiculous. First, most schools have a LOT of bathrooms, and at my middle school you have 5 pairs of student bathrooms. So to put a monitor in there is going to cost probably a quarter mil a year at one school alone in personnel. The teachers are overworked, and most schools don't have 10 janitors or other personnel to do this. Plus as said, this opens up the school system to a liability situation. Also if I did cameras, I am going to have to setup at least 10 cameras, and then you have serious privacy issues to contend with. Not to mention a nice camera that can record the abuse would cost a couple hundred dollars and would have the potential to be abused. Hell none of my schools even have as many cameras around the perimeter for security as they do number of student bathrooms.Usually the best solution is just to keep the kids from using these devices. They have no reason to need a PSP, DS, PocketPC, or cellphone during the school day. Most kids are satisfied if they can carry their electronic devices in their backpack and use them after school, and will accept the limitations imposed of not using it during the day.
