between the site and book royalties, he's definitely made millions. not Jim goodnight baller, but probably leaps and bounds better off than any state alum (non athlete) within a several year span of his age.<1--[Edited on February 26, 2008 at 1:22 PM. Reason : -->]]

well, he's "accomplished" enough to have bought a Lamborghini around the age of 20 and is now building a theater in his house which "he hopes" to keep <$50khttp://www.anandtech.com/weblog/default.aspx?bcategory=8

regarding goodnight and prestonhe is actually the reason why the preston community exists. he owned the land and speadheaded its development (including the golf course and country club). sas employees where able to buy land and build homes when preston was just getting started at a rediculous discount. not sure what kind of stake he has in all the other preston properties (ie all of the commercial development starting at preston corners to where cary parkway and maynard intersect) but i imagine its a decent amount

^ that's amazing - when you think about it, between SAS + the SAS Campus and Prestonwood, Jim Goodnight is almost singlehandedly responsible for the meteoric rise of Cary over the past 20 years! (for good or for bad, i suppose, depending on your view of Cary)
2/26/2008 9:33:37 PM
goodnight bought preston when it was going bankruptwessex is the area where sas employees got a discount to build

btw, does anyone have access to the National Geographic cover story they did on the NC Piedmont, with a focus on Cary, in the early 90s? I remember when it came out way back then before I knew anything of Cary. I wonder what they said about SAS in that article....

Goodnight owns a shitload of land around Cary/Raleighhe owns the Embassy Suites in Cary, tooi met him a few months ago, dude is tall as shit...my dad writes his speeches./bragThe VP, other owner of SAS, John Sall, is pretty ballin too... i think he went here for grad school
2/26/2008 11:06:59 PM
^ yeah, Goodnight spoke at my graduation in Dec 02. He was a good speaker. A bit non-PC, and made some of the higher-ups on the stage behind him (mary anne fox was the chancellor at the time) squirm and had they had to kind of "back out" of some of the things he said. He didn't say anything too bad, really (and i don't remember it very well), but mostly made several slightly off-color remarks about the number of foreigners or non-native english speakers who are in the engineering school now, or the difference in foreign TAs when he was a student in the 70s vs now.
2/26/2008 11:14:44 PM
haha.. i don't think my dad wrote his speeches before 2005.. apparently he was supposed to give a 45 minute speech at some NCSU function once and he went up there and talked for 5 minutes and got off stage and the State people were pissed

Regarding Cary - its not too bad. Apex on the other hand is ridiculous.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but from my understanding of what the GM at one of the country clubs I work at told me, country clubs are "owned" by their members? So how is Prestonwood owned by Goodnight or is he just the founder?

2/27/2008 3:14:53 AM
He also founded/owns Cary Academy. (private technology based high school)

haha, yeah, dr. g is a pretty normal guy save for the fact he's so richhe also owns a MASSIVE art collection that's hung all around campushe built cary academy as wellhe's a really nice guy though
5/19/2008 6:15:32 PM
I have a question, but didn't Dr. Goodnight develop SAS while a teacher at state with other professors. Shouldn't it be NCSU property and not Goodnights?
5/19/2008 6:37:03 PM
^ It only works that way when you're a grad student. Then your profs and the university can steal whatever you want.
