mostly large dogs...it has to do with how they eat and how much at each mealwhen they're gulping food at floor level, they're taking in air...large dogs each larger meals and take in more air...their GI systems don't have the ability to get rid of the excess air and it causes bloat (i think it ends up twisting parts of their GI tract)feeding them smaller meals in elevated bowls can really prevent it from happening in most casesall of that is from what i remember from years ago, so if anyone has a source and/or wants to correct it, by all means[Edited on February 21, 2008 at 11:06 AM. I just talked to the doctor out there. He's recovering from surgery and moving around a bit, so there shouldn't be any complications from that.He still isn't showing any interest in food and water, which isn't great news. Right now everything is riding on his stomach recovering.

I am glad to hear things are looking up...

We had a dog staying at our kennel develope bloat. He was eating Beneful, ran out, so we gave him our premium dog food. Luckily our staff caught it in time to save his life. It's a scary thing.

I just visited him. They gave me a private room and brought him in with a bowl of wet food to see if he would eat for me. His ears perked up when he saw me and he walked over and rested his head on my knee. He was pretty drugged up on painkillers and wouldn't eat for me. I'm pretty sure that he forgot what was going on because eventually he just stared at the floor and swayed back and forth. When I took him back to his kennel he turned around and saw me and his ears perked up again like I had just gotten there. I'm hoping that the lack of appetite is a side effect of the drugs. They explained to me today that when they opened him up the damaged stomach wall was a bit discolored, but not black like dead tissue. I'm starting to feel a bit more optimistic about it all, but it will be a few days before we can be certain about anything.

2/21/2008 5:55:49 PM
aww, poor thing. Sounds like he's in his own little world! A dog that big will definitely get an appetite sooner or later. Hang in there!
2/21/2008 5:59:47 PM
Cmon Peyton! Keep fighting buddy. I know you will get better soon. It probably helps him when you go visit so you should try to go visit him as much as possible Mr Joshua. I just said a prayer for Peyton.

2/21/2008 6:44:14 PM

2/21/2008 6:45:49 PM
I'm 100% behind the doctrine that dogs are better than people.Hope your dog gets better.
2/21/2008 8:23:51 PM
I just called. He's still pretty drugged up and hasn't eaten anything, but they took him outside and he peed earlier. Thats the first time that he's relieved himself since surgery. They asked if there was any food that he might be more interested in than standard dog stuff. I told them that he loves junk food and they gave me the green light to bring him some McDonalds tomorrow. I might go with Snoopys or Char-Grill instead.

I just called them and he's doing better. He's off of the IV and his heart rate stabilized enough that they're able to take him off of the EKG. He's drinking water and has had some gas, so it looks like his GI tract is in good shape (this is the first time that Peyton farts have been a good thing). He still hasn't eaten anything, so I'm going to head out to the vet with a rotisserie chicken from the Teeter and some Snoopys for him. Hopefully he won't be as medicated when I see him today.

man, I'm sending some more thoughts Peyton's way. I tear up when I just think about my dog getting old (he's 2.5 years old), so I can't even imagine the rollercoaster you've been on. Good luck you guys.
2/22/2008 3:04:06 PM
^ I have a hard time thinking about Grits getting old. I try not to think about it.Hope Peyton gobbles up the chicken!
2/22/2008 3:28:01 PM
I took him the chicken this afternoon. He was really excited to see me and he looked pretty happy about the chicken smell. He was a lot more livelier than yesterday and was eager to nuzzle with me, but he wasn't very interested in the food once I cut off a piece and offered it to him. Hopefully thats just because he's nauseous from the painkillers.I took him outside and he peed a river, so thats good news. It looks like all of his bodily functions are working, he's just not eating. The doc said that its ok for him to not eat for a while as he was a bit overweight.
2/22/2008 6:10:50 PM
That certainly sounds promising!
2/22/2008 8:51:22 PM
Mr. Joshua, I would like for you to know that it was my power of prayer, and my power of prayer alone that helped out your pooch.I'm not trying to gloat or anything, but just know.....you owe me big time buddy. Big time....
2/22/2008 9:02:00 PM
It was the power of everyone's prayer (and a good vet)
