Once again, Technician doesn't get money from the University. Seriously, ignore budget issues if you want, but I mean, everyone else lives in the real world. There have been outside issues with ad sales all year that were not there the previous few years (there also was no DTH a couple years ago, but that's neither here nor there).I'm told they're going to work on producing one from now on, regardless of ad sales. If there aren't enough ad sales to print, they'll post a PDF of the page online. It was too late in the process to do that this year. Also, they can't just post the stories that are written for it online because of legal issues. Spoof issues/stories have to be VERY CLEARLY spoof issues and stories. Simply posting them online on the regular Technician Web site is not clear enough. Lots of bad things can happen. Also, for Page 2:marko FTW.Make your own signs, courtesy of marko and his website.http://wolfpackcartoons.com/[Edited on February 20, 2008 at 10:29 AM. These youngans these days don't care about traditions.

technician not running this is a complete joke. do you how many alumni swing by campus to pick up a copy of this?the only thing the technician is good for on a daily basis is the police blotter.
2/20/2008 10:33:45 AM
Yes, that may sound like a reasonable suggestion (to print only DTH spoof). But here's why it can't work:Ad sales are predicated on placement. Some ads are sold with the intent of being placed on color or black and white pages. Also, obviously, on ad size. If Company A buys a quarter page ad to go on Color Page 3, that's where it goes. The editorial staff has to work around the ad placement. Company A would probably be dismayed to find out its ad was not placed according to the terms of the sale. It's just not as simple as BAKE SALE 4 DTH!!1
2/20/2008 10:34:13 AM
company a should realize this is tradition
2/20/2008 10:36:47 AM
throw $5 more in the student tuition next year for god's sake.
2/20/2008 10:39:44 AM
^^ hahaha...maybe so.
2/20/2008 10:41:03 AM
whomever budgets spending for the year should make a point to set aside money for the DTH if the budget is that tight. add placement bullshit aside, there should be money for a once a year tradition like this.[Edited on February 20, 2008 at 10:46 AM. Reason : akd]

if we lose, i'm blaming the technicianseriously though... why don't they just take out a few of the shitty articles in the middle of the paper and print the Daily Tar Hell instead... and I'm sure more people read the Technician today than most days, so wouldn't the Ad Sales Department have an easier time selling ads on this day... just seems completely patheticand at the VERY least, couldn't they have at least made a PDF version or online version?[Edited on February 20, 2008 at 10:58 AM. I dont know about you guys...But I would much rather read about "Grime on Raleigh cars a lasting result of the drought" MUCH more than a DTH spoof.

Terrible decision. If budgetary concerns are indeed the only reason why it was not produced this year, then it seems that someone could have been creative enough to come up with something. I actually enjoyed the technician when I was in school, but most people didn't and there were TWO things that everyone loved and paid attention to. Crossword puzzles and the Daily Tar Heel. How do you manage to let budget concerns fuck one of those up?Either that, or divert some student funds from the nubian message and the agromeck (two completely worthless productions that noone reads).
2/20/2008 11:20:21 AM
Well shit. I was worried that I didn't think to pick up a copy on my way to work this morning and that they'd all be gone by the time I could get one this afternoon--guess I don't have to worry about it now.Yes, yes, there are valid budgetary reasons and all, but--this is, in my opinion, the most looked forward to issue of Technician all year for many students, and they just cancel it? Again??? (IIRC this also happened a couple of years ago.) I usually try not to slam the Technican staff too much--I read it practically every day--but this is just ridiculous. I'm sure it's not an easy job to sell ads etc. for a student paper, but they're clearly doing a poor job of it.
2/20/2008 11:35:31 AM
I'll chime in and agree that this is the one issue you shouldn't fuck up...set aside monetary funds FOR this issue.A huge letdown. The DTH is one of the few redeeming features of the Technician year in and year out....and you can't ever get that right.Fuck.

Dear TechnicianYou have true failed me this year. Every time I open the Technician'sViewpoint section I see an article along the lines of, "Bring Back OldTraditions," or "Support This or That New Tradition." Well, Technician, you have a Tradition too, THE DAILY TAR HELL. Evidently you do notunderstand the significance of this issue. I had three family friends aswell as my brother, who are all alumni, ask me to get them a copy. Nowwhat am I supposed to tell them? That the Technician is too lazy to put alittle extra effort to cheer up thousands of peoples days.I am also a little confused on the budget issue. You did have enoughmoney to print a full page full color article on NC State students workingat animal shelters. You also had a full page color article on the dust oncars in Raleigh. You didn't, however, have enough money to print a onepage black and white insert. I'm sure if you would have told anyone aheadof time that you would not be able to print this issue, some alumni orstudent group would have funded it. Why did we even need a regular issuetoday? If this was only because of ad sales then your marketingdepartment is a failure.I think one of two things happened. You forgot about it because youreally don't understand the hatred for UNC that dwells in many of us, oryou were told by some "higher power" that the last issue was offensive andyou didn't have the guts to print the paper. You have truly failed every faculty member, student, and alumni of thisgreat institution.

2/20/2008 12:04:47 PM
they should prob just drop this paper, and give incoming students a crossword puzzle book that will last them 4 years in college where the same puzzle comes back up every 5th or 6th time
2/20/2008 12:05:19 PM
Budgetary restrictions? Ad sales? That is a total crock of shit, you could sell ads SPECIFICALLY for the Daily Tar Hell, even for higher prices because you could guarantee all of the advertisers that THIS SINGLE ISSUE WOULD BE THE MOST READ ISSUE ALL YEAR.How about we hear the truth, probably Tom Stafford didn't want to offend anyone who went to carolina, much like that bullshit 'positive noise' that they put on all of the fan cheering sheets.I think the administration threw down a politically correct ultimatum and the staff were forced to provide some excuse about budget and ads.....
2/20/2008 12:08:31 PM
hahaha definitely not.Feeling like the budgetary reasons are not good enough are all positively valid opinions to hold. But that ^ is definitely not true.

How do they manage their budget? How do you get this far into the year without knowing that you haven't left money for this? Just include this when you make the budget and come up with ad revenue goals. It doesn't seem like it should be this hard to plan for something you know is going to happen every year.
2/20/2008 12:15:27 PM
at least we can read about the grime on cars in Raleigh.fascinating stuff
2/20/2008 12:16:22 PM
This is the most disappointing day as far as the paper goes. In the table about the last 5 games vs unc at the RBC Center, they have one of the table headings as Duke's Ranking. If you're not going to do the DTH, at least proof read the freaking thing.[Edited on February 20, 2008 at 12:19 PM. Reason : .]

haha...I do not work there anymore. I was a Deputy Sports Editor from April 2007 until my graduation this past December. But I am still in the loop a little because I'm close friends with a lot of the people there. The real reason is what I've said: budget restrictions. As for a conspiracy theory... If there was one, I suppose I'd be a part of it.
2/20/2008 12:20:55 PM
ok but here's the thing about the "budget".the technican is an absolute piece of shit. unless every penny they have has gone to buying new crossword puzzles, there's no reason to not have the budget to do the DTH.

Also, on a somewhat unrelated note, does the Technician even *have* anyone who proofs the articles? Misspellings, poor captions, and grammatical errors are absolutely rampant. I actually thought about trying to sign on a year or two ago, except that evidently to be on Technician staff you have to be a full-time student, which I am not.
2/20/2008 5:12:18 PM
yes, each story is supposed to be read at least a few times. sometimes an older (unproofed) version of the story is pulled onto the page during design. sometimes the staff just has to meet deadline.
2/20/2008 6:39:58 PM
I was very disappointed to find no Daily Tar Hell today. I assume its a lack of writing talent and a lack of resources.Dammit State, grow some traditional testicles.
