Furthermore, you can always choose not to respond to questions about your previous salary. If you were making $45k per year for Company A and you found out Company B was paying its employees $60k per year to do the same thing you probably wouldn't want to disclose that you're already doing the job for $45k in your interview. You cannot control when a company responds for you.
