I've got a green Chrome Metropolis for bike commuting and general cycling use (beer runs, carrying frames/wheels, etc.). It also carries my dog comfortably with a 2-way stomach/chest strap. Advantages: very waterproof, designed to wrap around the body, and has a shit ton of room in a shell that can come out for cleaning. I've known people that have only replaced theirs after a decade of daily use. Disadvantages: wished it had more compartments besides the zipper wallet compartment and some on the front, price ($130), looks dorky if you're not biking. In retrospect, I would have sprung for a Reload bag, but I tried the dog in one and she sat more awkwardly. You might also be more comfortable with the next size down, the Citizen, as these bags were built originally for messengers carrying bulky loads, hence the huge central compartment.

the maxpedition bag hangs like a brick on your body. i'm pretty sure the person wanting a functional bag that isn't bulky.

^yeah. I have a backpack with a chest a waste strap for larger amounts of stuff. Much more comfortable than larger messenger bags. I just wanted one for my netbook and some books. I ended up ordering the Mountain Hardwear Sentinel Jr. from REI and got a 20% discount with a membership. http://www.rei.com/product/772295

check out Tom Bihn, they seem to understand how to make a durable bag with smart featuresI have used the Super Ego daily for about 2 years and it still looks new. It is one of the few quality messengers that will fit a 17" laptop. The Empire Builder is even better imo, but just not big enough for my laptop
