back to the original question, yes I lived there for 3 years. There are many things that are different up there than in the "lower 48"for example where we lived we got our nbc/cbs/abc out of denver, no idea why, but that's where they came from, so everything was 2 hours earlier, prime time started at 6PM. It does take things extra time to get up there, add about 2 days on average. Cost of living is much higher, but there is no sales tax and no income tax, and they cut you a check each year for dividends. When we moved up there we drove, and took our time to get there, we took the ferry system up the panhandle/inner passage which was really neat. Anchorage is a cool ass city with a lot of flavor. I'm a sucker for the smaller towns up there. As for daylight/darkness during the summer months it is mostly daylight, but does get dark a little bit, the opposite is true for the winter, but it is very dependent on where you live.As for 4wd, most people do have them, but it's a lot different up there, you can get around because the roads are plowed, ice is more of a problem and 4wd doesn't help that at all.I loved living up there and would drop everything and go back in a heartbeat, and have been looking very hard at doing such.

I'd live in Hawaii if given the chance.

^so how do native alaskans act toward newcomers? are they pretty welcoming? alaska is my #1 state to visit right now, and if i like it as much as i think i will, i'm going to try to move there.

towards us honkey's huh... haha yeah they are pretty cool about stuff. You also have to realize that there's a difference between "natives" like the aleut indians and the such. They have a lot of rights that the gov't grants them. They are also very much like the native indians in the conus... as in high unemployment, low education, drug and alcohol problems and the like. As for tourists it's like anything else, it's a huge industry now up there.Shoot I'm going back in Sept to be a tourist! Taking the wife up as she's never been further west of Ft. Wayne, IN!AK is awesome, but it's either for you or not... there is no middle ground like there is here. My dad hated it up there, my mom and I loved it, it's just one of those things. It's something that I will always have with me the experiences that I had up there. Granted I lived on an island, but still it had the potential of being very stressful and alcoholism and depression (including suicide) were very rampant... But you make it what you want it to be, there are LOADS of things to do to take your mind of the isolationism of the place. Anchorage is the exception it is like most other cities as far as amenities, and there is a huge AF base there so it's a good mix of people, native alaskans (not indians) and the like.

My aunt and uncle live in Petersburg, AK. They moved there in the 70's and they love it. They now own a bed and breakfast, and a whale-watching/fishing boat. When I was younger, they used to try to get me to come up there for the summer but at the time I wasn't into the isolation or having nothing to watch on tv. Now with internet and satellite tv, it seems they aren't as cut off. Also, I think that money that the state gives them each year paid for their 2 kids college tuition....

You get a check from the Federal Government for living there.

You can probably buy a cabin there cheap and just live in it a couple months out of the year. I couldn't do it year round and I don't think you could either JB. Bunch of PAC 10 fans up there.
