Sorry to hear about the exam Yoshie. David -- ah, you're correct about the baker's dozen. You gave a lot of really good ideas in this thread last year. That's why I like being here. To reiterate some comments above -- we'd love for people to register early, not later if possible. We have to deal with certain delays not in our control (time to get t-shirts printed, donuts made) so the better count we have early on the more smoothly race day will go.Thanks a bunch guys.

Would you have any problems with the Carolina rollergirls signing up for casual status and rollerskating this thing instead of running?
1/9/2008 9:06:30 AM
Absolutely not. We love crazy stuff like this. Invite them all!
1/9/2008 12:36:13 PM
Sweet. I know that at least 6 have signed up or will be soon. I'm doing it again with another Derby husband as well. Not sure if they're going to skate it or not. They'd haul some ass coming down Peace street though
1/9/2008 8:09:30 PM
LOL
1/9/2008 8:30:17 PM
Jeez. Current # of registrants: 589. This time last year we were at just about the 200 mark.
1/10/2008 2:16:58 PM
The Rollergirls skating would be absolutely fantastic.
1/10/2008 5:04:50 PM
Can I ride a bike?
1/10/2008 7:43:22 PM
haha exactlyyou let them roller skate, whats the limit on that, next thing the biking team will be doing it, then NC state motorsports

Doughnuts: 12 Original Glazed Krispy Kreme Doughnuts * 2400 calories * 1200 fat calories * 144g of fat * 36g of saturated fat * 48g of trans fat * 60mg of Cholesterol * 1140mg of sodium * 120g of sugar * 24g of proteinAt least you'll feel good about getting your recommended daily intake of protein.I'm considering doing this...it sounds like fun
1/10/2008 8:46:16 PM
Thankfully, Krispy Kreme has gone trans-fat free. So that's 48g less bad for you? Give it a try!
1/10/2008 10:29:49 PM
This is why I miss Raleighwood so much...Krispy Kremes!!! Somebody take lotsa photos...
1/10/2008 10:32:33 PM
For those who are interested, here is a comparison of the # of registrants vs time, between the 2007 race and this year's race. For KKC 2008, the data is from Nov 2 to Jan 11.http://www.saketvora.com/kkc/kkc_registrants_vs_time_comparison.pdfYou can see why it makes planning and estimating resources difficult.
1/12/2008 11:02:37 AM
^^^^ I hope you don't seriously think that 24 grams of protein is even close to the RDI/RDA.
1/12/2008 12:25:57 PM
Haha. 750 already.
1/13/2008 9:20:11 PM
Is there unlimited water to drink at this thing?
1/14/2008 11:06:06 AM
I'd do it if you only had to eat like one or 2 donuts. But 12?
1/14/2008 11:25:30 AM
Just sign up under the "Casual Runner" or whatever category instead of "Competitor" then. Ain't nothing wrong with that, you get the shirt, and more $ goes to the Children's Hospital.
1/14/2008 11:52:11 AM
Johnny Swank is absolutely correct. Sign up as a casual runner and come out -- you'll have a blast. Hydro290 (not sure if your name belies the nature of your question, heh): we're planning to have plenty of water on hand both at the Krispy Kreme store and the Belltower.
1/14/2008 12:57:13 PM
And, if you do sign up as a Casual Runner and decide you want to become a Challenger, just eat all 12 donuts and show the empty box to a race official at the store. Your race tag will be marked and you'll automatically be upgraded to Challenger status.
1/14/2008 4:02:48 PM
We broke 800 registrants today!
1/14/2008 5:18:05 PM
hey got a quick question for those that have done this:how long did it take you to eat the 12, and are there any tips you could give about eating them(eat them in sets of 3, sets of 4, etc)
1/14/2008 5:20:18 PM
1/14/2008 7:25:23 PM
^ yeah, i'm with ya. we're used to it now. anything to help increase participation. more people = more fun = more money for the Children's Hospital.
1/14/2008 8:25:51 PM
dnl, what i did last year and what worked for me wasstack of 3 (1-3), stack of 3 (4-6), stack of 3 (7-9), just 1 (10), stack of 2 (11-12)i ate #10 by itself because thats where i couldn't get through in 2005, and i wanted to focus on that one specifically. but i like stacking 3. i know other people stack 4, even 6.it took me about 25 minutes to eat all the doughnuts. in 2005 it took me 80 minutes to eat 9. so its all about mental toughness. [Edited on January 14, 2008 at 8:36 PM. Reason : time]
1/14/2008 8:33:26 PM
^^^bellrabbit would be a good person to ask those details
1/14/2008 8:33:51 PM
Eating 3 or more stacked would seem difficult to fit into your mouth, unless you're Steven Tyler of Aerosmith. Perhaps a more efficient method would be to stack 6 of them on top of each other, and push them down into a pancake shape, and eat it like that. Krispy Kreme doughnuts are sticky and full of air so I imagine it wouldn't be too hard to mold them into whichever shape you deem fit for mass eating.
1/14/2008 8:51:30 PM
i crammed 4 at a time into a ball and ate em that way
1/14/2008 8:54:03 PM
and water is provided?...thinking i would like 3 balls of 4 donuts crammed together, rather than 4 balls of 3...i may do this...i hope the day to sign up in the brickyard hasnt passed yet
1/14/2008 9:00:11 PM
I ate them one at a time. The guy who finished 3rd (mike aldrink) was eating beside me and I believe he was stacking them. I think it backfired though because he was having a hard time getting it down. I don't think there's any secret way to go about it, just let the animal instinct take over. Just have no mercy, don't worry about getting your hands or clothes sticky, just listen to the voice in your head that is saying, "get these things down as fast as f*cking possible."
1/14/2008 9:36:26 PM
Thanks for that, bellrabbit. I've been wondering about the best strategy for the actual doughnut eating. Also, what was your diet prior to the race? Did you skip dinner the night before to make room for the doughnuts? I'm having trouble figuring out whether or not I should sacrifice having energy from some food the night before (probably pasta) versus having an empty stomach. I would hate to hit a roadblock and not be able to eat all 12.
1/14/2008 10:23:53 PM
I didn't really do anything different than I normally would. The key is to not over-think things. 12 donuts is a lot, but it's not THAT much. It could be much worse. I would think that you wouldn't want to have any empty stomach because that might make it feel worse and even quicken the rate at which your body goes into barf mode. Think about it this way. If your stomach is empty and you start pounding sugar into it, it's not going to feel good. But if there is a small bit of something in there it will help keep it under control and I guess absorb a certain amount so that your stomach doesn't want to upchuck it instantly. I recall just eating normally the day before and the morning of the race I drank water, had some toast and a granola bar I think. Not right before the race, but like 90 mins before. Take it easy on the bread i'd say.As for the process of eating the donuts, again, I think it's best to go simple. I know stuffing multiple donuts down at once seems to make the most sense, but just judging from what i've seen it becomes a slow, grueling process of trying to swallow. Even though there are 12 of them, which seems like a lot, if you just down the one at a time really quickly it seems to work better. Like if you were eating popcorn, it'd be easier to eat a piece at a time really quick than try to stuff 3-4 huge mouthfuls down.
1/14/2008 11:12:27 PM
hmmmmmmmmmi know i could eat the first 4 or 5 easy.....how bout first 6 one at a time, then the other 6 in one giant dough balli'm just nervous about doing it cause if i do it, i want to do it in under an hour...i would feel like a loser if i didnt accomplish this
1/14/2008 11:22:19 PM
couldn't sleep, just registered.
1/15/2008 12:26:55 AM
I tried the one at at time method last year, but gave that up. 3 squished together was the sweet spot for me. Water is your friend. You could probably dunk those things first. It's all mind over matter. Just cram those fuckers down and get back on the road. I'm having a beer at Sadlacks afterward, just like last year. All you people that eat healthy are the ones who suffer. You've got to have your body tuned to be able to handle that much fat and sugar at one time. I myself, have done much training this year in the eating department, but very well may have an aneurysm from the running.[Edited on January 15, 2008 at 11:49 AM. Reason : .]

God, 1023 registrants and still a week and half to go....this might be becoming the largest competitive eating competition (in terms of participants) in the world.

I made this:A little late, but perhaps it will drum up some extra interest. I hope it's appropriately epic.
1/18/2008 9:10:49 PM
After a night of drinking, a friend and I went to Krispy Kreme to "train" by eating six doughnuts a piece as quickly as we could (I tried to talk him into the dozen, but we compromised). We hoped to obtain our "average time per doughnut." Anyway, we got there and discovered that they close at midnight. We were pissed at the time, but it was definitely a blessing in disguise the next morning. Anyway, I've ramped up my training by jogging more regularily at Umstead and the gym. I'm not as fit as I usually would be due to an injury (I'll be wearing a cast during the Challenge), but I am definitely looking forward to next Saturday! Over 1200 registered! Thanks for the diet information, bellrabbit.
