guitar (and occassionally saxophone)
lifting weights
skiing
waterskiing
jet skiing
SCUBA diving
shooting
hunting (mostly deer)
flying radio-controlled airplanes
flying real airplanes
fast cars, classic cars, sports cars--driving, buying, selling, working on, looking at, reading about...
4x4 trucks (would like to have another ATV, but I can't afford everything)
motorcycles (mostly sportbikes)
researching and trading stocks...well, really i mostly buy. i've only sold a few.

i also have a lot of interest in music and politics

i just generally have waaay too many hobbies and interests for the amount of time and money i have to devote to them...and most of them are on the expensive side

[Edited on January 4, 2008 at 2:43 AM. Reason : sold my jet ski; motorcycle got stolen...will replace both when i move back to NC]

horses, shooting, and hunting . . . so I'm pretty much always broke.

I'd like to get back into making models, I used to love that back in the day.

Plus $1007/month in child support!

Well, I have 2 roommates...and I don't spend any real substantial amount of money on booze. I don't have to drive far to get to work. I spend very little on clothes, because I wear a flight suit every day. My cell phone is almost 3 years old.

guitar and sax don't really cost me anything--i've accumulated all my gear over time. Lifting weights is free at the base gym (other than protein powder).

I buy all my skiing gear in the summer and get it for super cheap ($1000 set of skis and bindings for $299 shipped to my door this summer). Lift tickets and transportation to get to the mountain add up, but it's only a few months per year.

Waterskiing is almost free to me--I only go with friends who have boats and gear, so I just chip in a little on gas.

I sold my jet ski (although I'm gonna get another when I get back to NC. this is an expensive one, both in terms of buying a jet ski and putting gas in it...they burn gas an an atrocious rate).

SCUBA? I don't take exotic trips to do it...in the USMC, i'm generally stationed at the coast somewhere...I have mask/fins/snorkel/wetsuit/dive computer, and just have to rent tanks/regs/BC/weights/etc. It's not too expensive to do a few times in the summer.

Shooting? Figure $20-50 per day for ammo/targets/range fees...again, I only do it once every couple of months. Guns are way expensive, but I have 3 already.

Hunting isn't too bad...$30-40 per year for license and tags. I'm not even going this year, anyway. I also have all the clothes and a tree stand.

Flying RC planes isn't bad for me--my grandfather owns a hobby shop, so he pretty much sets me up with whatever I want (within reason).

Flying real airplanes is extremely expensive...I used to do it a lot before my daughter came along. Lately it's just been once every few months (other than military flying, which is a job, not a hobby).

cars and trucks? My Evo was $26k (1 year old and from an eager seller). It's a world class performance car, but plenty of people spend just as much on a Civic or Camry. It's bad on gas, tires, and insurance, but it's doable and not out of line with what most people spend on transportation. Also, I've actually made good money on several of my sports cars by buying them from people who really needed to sell/didn't know what they had/had so much money they didn't care. If you're even just breaking even, you're really only paying for operating costs...so in the long run, this isn't as big of an expense as it first appears.

4x4 trucks? Don't have one at the moment, but that could change at any moment. You can get a used truck for <$1000 up to $2000-3000 for something decent.

Motorcycles? Again, you can finance for pretty low monthly payments, or get something nice (used) for a few grand. They're bad on tires and (to some extent) insurance, but if you ride a lot, they'll help balance it out by not using much gas. I still have all of my gear I've accumulated over the years.

Listening to music and reading about politics and stuff doesn't cost anything but time.

Investing is something I treat like a bill. I have $$$ automatically drafted from my pay each month to go into my IRA, money market, and brokerage account. All of my bills except for child support and rent are drafted, too. After that, I can spend the rest however I want and not feel bad about it.

Basically, I've received a few things (rifle, 1 of my guitars, dive computer, motorcycle helmet, ski jacket, RC airplanes) as gifts over the years, and basically none of those except the helmet wear out. I've bought other stuff here and there (often on huge discount off season or used from a motivated/desperate seller). Lots of my hobbies don't really cost much after the initial outlay for gear/etc.

Some of my hobbies are seasonal. Some I don't do that much (I definitely can't afford to do lots of this stuff as much as I'd like or as much as someone who is more focused on fewer activities).

Finally, salvage value is my friend. I drove my supercharged S2000 for 2 years, wore out the tires, and blew up the stereo amp...and sold it for $2k profit. I sold my BMW 330ci for $3k profit after just a few months. I should just about break even on the Evo. I lost $200 on my jet ski after owning the better part of a year. I made a few bucks on my first motorcycle, lost a few hundred on the 2nd, and lost maybe $1500 on the 3rd. For years of motorcycling, that's really not that much expense (other than operating costs).

In this order:
Skydiving
BASE Jumping
Drinking
Cooking
Poker

I'm getting my instructor license for skydiving right now. Luckily I have a pimp job now and get to do everything I had previously wanted to do when I couldn't afford it in school.
