Why does everyone who waits tables think they deserve 15% tip on every meal? Its a friggin TIP. That means you have to earn it. I'm sorry that you only get paid $2.5/hr, but I'm not gonna pay your salary unless you actually do your job. All decent wait staff gets 15%. Shitty wait staff that never comes back, or screws up your order, or just plain sucks doesn't deserve jack. And why should you get paid more tip for doing the exact same job, just delivering more expensive food? If I go out and order 2 lobster tails with 2 Gin&tonics, why should you get a 20$ tip when you carry out 2 burgers and 2 waters and get a $3 tip? You did the same amount of work both times. 2 plates, 2 drinks. Waiters dont make or prepare the food, and they rarely bus tables, and they certainly dont make drinks unless its pouring a beer. They only carry the crap.
Last night my waiter was some idiot who knew nothing about service. Had a 6" by 6" pile of wrappers and trash sitting on the edge of my table for 3 visits before I had to ask him to take it away. Oh, and when I ask for a draft guiness (what with your 40 signs, pens, and posters all over the place), I do not mean a 5 dollar CAN of guiness poured into a glass. I can get that at food lion $1.75 a can. Also, appetizers do not come out 30 seconds before the rest of the food. They come out 5-10min before. Onion rings do not take 20min to cook. Turn on the fucking fryer. All that BS earned him a whopping $1 tip. The only reason he got that was because he did the actual job and came back at least a few times.

^ So I'm not the only one who thinks this way. I think a lot of waitstaff develop a sense of entitlement to tips. If they don't like getting $2.50 an hour they can go work at UPS. I have left bad tips before for exceedingly bad service. Amedeo's sticks out in my mind, where we were seated and then forgotten, having to go to the front desk and ask for our waiter to take our fucking order. Or maybe restaurants should just charge a service fee.

Because they get paid well below minimum wage because of that?

Besides which, you want your waiter or waitress to be perfect every time? They're people. And if you had to manage that many tables on a busy night, I'm sure you wouldn't do so well either.

My friends and I used to go to the pizza hut buffet on peace st. (no, it's no longer there) almost every day, since it was across the street from Broughton. Now, we were all big football player types, who would ridicule each other if somebody didn't eat enough.

Our football team sold "gold cards" as a fund raiser, and one of the deals that came with the card was 2 buffets for the price of one. So we used that deal every day, ordered water, and didn't tip since it was a buffet. we each got >10 pieces of pizza for 2.18 every day.

Like I said, that pizza hut is no longer open.

pizza hut waitstaff only make $2.50/hour regardless of whether they are serving buffet or not. They depend on your tips. If they give good service, give them what they deserve.

Who do you think puts the food out on the buffet? Who cleans your tables? Who gets your water? etc, etc, etc

There are some places that are "no tipping" places - i.e. certain buffets and pizza places, but unless you know for sure, you should leave at least a buck or two.

the kitchen staff puts the food on the buffet. the busboys clean the tables.

as far as getting me water... we did leave the 80 cents leftover from a 5 on the table between two people.

i'm not in the business for giving people money just because they feel entitled to it.

buffets should just install smaller doors... ones that are <1' wide... that way if you can't fit in sideways they don't have to worry about you
