Darks and reds get their own first wash in hot water when they're first used, and then after that, they're fair game to be thrown into a mixed load.

Sometimes I sort by color, sometimes by material, but most often, by a mix. I have some old shirts that I LOVE (I've had them since HS, and I still get compliments every time I wear them). They're starting to show their age, and I am trying to slow it.

I have my work pants, which are rayon, and the hardware on those isn't harsh. So I'll wash older/fragile shirts with those, and maybe sock and underwear if I need to fill the washer. Cold.

Then I wash my bumming around clothes with my jeans, as wear-and-tear on them doesn't matter. Warm.

Then I'll have a general purpose load - knit shirts in good condition, non-work slacks, anything that didn't get in an earlier load. Temp is dependent on the prevalent color in the load.

I wash my bras in their own wash, because otherwise, they get tangled on something and pulled, or the underwires bent. Then I do my hosiery in a separate load. If I didn't get socks and underwear done before then, I will put those in this load. Cold; air-dried.

This is for a full laundry. If I'm washing laundry so that I can have an item or two clean to wear, I'll grab my favorite clothes that can stand being in the full washer with whatever the harshest item in the load is. So if I'm washing a certain pair of jeans, I'll grab all my black underwear, black and red knit shirts that I love so much, and some Tshirts to fill it out. If I still come up short, I'll throw dark-colored towels in. I make sure that the water used gets used wisely.

Light-colored towels, or really icky ones (like the time the dog vomited black stuff all over the kitchen), and light sheets are all washed in hot water, with bleach and borax. Dark-colored towels in hot water, no bleach.

If I'm really doing things right, I turn all my clothes inside out before washing them.

Once, when every single item of clothing I had was cleaned, I paired up my socks and my hosiery. I have 62 pairs of matched socks, and ~10pairs of socks that aren't a perfect match, but can be worn together (like, the ribbing is a different width, or the toe seam is a different color, or the cuff is a different height), and 35 or so pairs of kneehighs for work

hey can clothes shrink no matter how many times they've already been washed? i kinda think i shrunk something

If you've properly laundered something to keep it from shrinking (say, cotton, cold wash, always air-dried), and then fuck up (hot water, used the dryer), yes, it can shrink.

If you always wash it the same, shrinkage will occur the first time or two. It's not going to just random shrink a size. Denim regroups somewhat every time you wash it, but it's very minimal.

different loads for lights and darks- and a separate load for newly bought jeans so they don't fade onto my clothes.

dry on low heat only.

wow ambrosia, you make laundry so complicated.. after posting that i do all my laundry together i got one of my work shirts out which is white and its all stained and gross now. maybe I need to start separating my loads. :/ DNL: we could work something out

the only reason i ever do laundry is because dakota needs clothes to wear... personally i have enough clothes of every type to make it at least 2 months, maybe longer

i attempt to do at least 1 load every other day. i could not do this if i didn't have a washer/dryer at home though.

if i don't keep up with it, catching up takes a whole day, and while i do not mind doing laundry at all, i really don't want to spend a whole day doing it
