Super Target is great, especially for the frozen items. They have coupons online every week, too. Their meat section is a little small though, so I usually buy meat from Harris Teeter.
1/2/2008 2:50:26 PM
their fish looks like crapola
1/2/2008 3:51:30 PM
^fish? What is wrong with you? Why would you even look at fish in a grocery store? Go to Earp's.
1/2/2008 5:46:13 PM
just happened to be passing bywhat is earps?

grocery boy jr! (if you can find one)Talk about GHETTO
1/3/2008 2:59:29 PM
i get a flyer for one called choice foods or something like that...anyone heard of that one? sounds kinda ghetto

No one store is the best. For rice flour, rice noodles, pad thai sauce, etc. it's Grand AsiaFor hot tea, random stuff big lots is goodFruits and veggies and 'cue, farmer's marketEverything else, food lion, preferably on saleI also go to Aldi, but unless you are in that part of Raleigh anyway the savings doesn't make up for the time and gas to get there. Great deals on some stuff, but it's on the other side of town.
1/4/2008 11:43:10 AM
^^ I've gotten their ads too. It seems ghetto because the meats they advertise are things like beef hearts and chicken feet and other parts I've never even heard of.I've been tempted to go by just out of morbid curiosity, but have never gotten the motivation.
1/4/2008 11:46:47 AM
Beef hearts and chicken feet are common in mexican and asian food, so it's not all that strange that they'd advertise them. Heart has a ton of cholesterol in it, but my dog went apeshit for it. Dogs and cats can handle crazy amounts of dietary cholesterol without ill effects, in case someone accuses me of killing my dog.Just don't TELL anyone there that the meat will be for your pet if you try it, because they'll be offended. If they ask what it's for, soup is ALWAYS a good answer. My dog couldn't eat kibble for months and months after surgery, and being able to buy cheap meat was a wallet saver.

HT's lunch sandwich deal is insane... the VIP deal is neat too... after buying 10-15 of them you get a huge one free! (a good deal when its a good work/lunch pick up stop)i'm a Food kitty guy mostly, but I think I need to check out Aldi. The Walmart in Brier Creek has some crazy prices on frozen dinners that put Food kitty to shame.
1/4/2008 2:03:51 PM
If you go to Aldi, you MUST buy their chocolate. Better than most stuff 4x the price.

I almost always shop at Teeter, b/c I don't mind paying a little more for the great selection, clean/well-kept stores, helpful employees, and 24-hour availability. Yes, taken as a whole, it does tend toward the expensive though.BUT. If you go there specifically for the VIC specials, are willing to clip coupons, and stay away from things that don't fall under those two categories, you can actually get some fantastic deals and save a lot of money. You do need to be willing to go somewhere like Food Dog or Aldi for things that aren't on sale though, which is where you lose all the money you save on the special items if you're not careful.

super walmart is the cheapest for some things around here for surefor example michelina's frozen dinners were for like 80 or 90 cents each, you may find it on sale at food lion for that but i've only seen it once or twice ever
1/5/2008 9:32:25 AM
rofl^^^ you act like you have never went to a super walmart before or something...everyone and their mom knows super walmart is THE cheapest place to go if you want the lowest prices without sales...michalinas tv dinners(one of the few cheap ones i can eat) are like 98 cents there...shit is like 1.40 at foodlion...banquets are like 88 cents at foodlion on sale...i'm guessing they are like 88 cents regular at super walmart...back home we have 3 super walmarts...fucking closest one here is like 20 minutes away which is fucking sad, but i guess they dont want to be hooking up ALL of raleigh with cheap food, only the yuppies in the brier creek area and in north raleigh[Edited on January 5, 2008 at 9:43 AM. Reason : ^michalinas go on sale like twice a month for buck a piece at foodlion...i stock up][Edited on January 5, 2008 at 9:44 AM. Reason : foodlion is def. the cheapest place to shop for deals...mvp is basically buy one get one free]

Food Lion: Cheapest overall...good deals on non-perishable and frozen groceries. I wouldn't touch the meat though. Check the expiration date on the canned goods, they allow expired stuff to sit on the shelves. And last weekend at the Avent Ferry store they were pulling all the milk off the shelves because of a "bad batch"...weird?Harry Teets: This is where I shop the most. If you clip coupons and match it up with the VIC deals you can get stuff for dirt cheap. Over the summer they were giving away 24 packs of Coors Light for $9.99. The regular prices are expensive as hell though! The Cameron Village store is crowded but always clean and the produce is fresh. Avoid the one on Jones Franklin (big homeless problem over there).Trader Joes: This place is sweet, if you're ever in Cary area. Dirt cheap for milk, eggs, produce, and random groceries. The people that work there are really nice, probably because they're allowed to wear Hawaiian shirts and khakis to work. If you go there on Sunday be prepared to fight your way through the swarms of Cary soccer moms.BJ's/Costco/Sam's: A membership at one of these places isn't a bad investment if you are living with a bunch of other people and want to split groceries. Other than that, it's not worth the membership fee.Super Wal-Mart: Probably the cheapest in terms of non-perishable groceries. I heard that they mess with the meat to keep it from turning brown (thus lengthening the shelf life although it's not fresh). The closest one is in North Raleigh...not worth the trip from NCSU!Whole Foods: Nice, but no grad student can afford to shop there. They should rename it Whole PaycheckThe farmer's market in Raleigh during the summer/fall is awesome for produce. It's cheaper because you're cutting out the middle man.

btttWent to Harris Teeter today...bought 2 weeks worth of groceries for $58.76Total VIC Savings This Order: $38.02Total VIC Savings This Year: $115.57if you shop carefully, you don't have to spend that much on groceries, even if you shop at relatively more expensive places such as Harry Teets

I'd vote for Sam's club, but it's better to split groceries with a roommate since everything is in bulk.Shampoo, conditioner, soap, etc. is super cheap! And if you go anytime between 10:00am - 4:00pm you can go around and snack on all the samples! Sam's Club Business Card FTW!!1[Edited on February 29, 2008 at 11:36 AM. Reason : ]

I always get vegetables there, but I don't have anyone to split them with, so I can only get one kind a week or else it goes bad before I can use it. This week is broccoli.
2/29/2008 11:39:05 AM
so . . . does anyone else get produce and seafood from the asian market??? dirty cheap and good if you can stand the weird smell of the store Trader joes has good prices on milk, eggs, certain things.. . which is why i go there, otherwise the crowds are not even worth it.otherwise i just go to HT 'cause it's 2 blocks from me
2/29/2008 11:56:20 AM
i think the produce selection at trader joes is terrible. i went there once and needed a lemon, and they didn't even have anythe other day my roommate bought some tomatoes there and they had mold on them the next day
3/1/2008 1:53:25 AM
sounds like the roomate sucks at picking out ripe tomatos
3/1/2008 3:02:34 AM
maybe, but she is a food snob.i mean, i don't think the store should have been selling tomatoes that have been there so long that they would have mold on them after one day
3/1/2008 9:46:55 AM
Did she keep them in a bag? That takes tomatoes out with a quickness. But I do agree that the produce section leaves something to be desired. But I think that's partly because of the reputation of having low prices on everything, so maybe they only keep the produce items they can handle selling for cheap?
3/1/2008 10:00:26 AM
3/1/2008 10:30:01 AM
no they weren't kept in a bag. i mean, maybe it was a fluke but they still have crappy selection.
