Sensodyne typically tastes like ass though.

Yes it does.

I use Alum on mine and it works like a charm. You can find it in the spice isle. Just get your finger a little wet and dip it in the alum to get it coated then apply directly to canker sore. It tastes like shit but my sores are gone within the next day.
7/8/2008 2:52:54 PM
Oh cool, I didn't know Tom's was SLS free. I used to use the cinnamon kind when I was a kid. And I've had Sensodyne before and I'll agree it tastes like ass. I'll just pick up some Tom's I guess.^ excellent! That's what I've heard, but I could never find it. I'll check the spice aisle. I can deal with a bad taste for quick healing. Anything is better than a bunch of canker sores.
7/8/2008 2:58:45 PM
Only certain types of Tom's is SLS free. I started buying it after I had a weird bout of canker sores that appeared in the exact same location. Haven't suffered anything from them since the switch.

my parents have something that is no longer available, it is like a long stick with some sort of chemical on the end...if you put this on your sink, it will permanently stain it. It always worked to clear them up in a day or two, but hurt like hell....i mean tearing up and all, when you applied it....i think they still got a few left over...i mainly got them when I had braces. They had them wrapped up like 5 different layers so they wouldnt stain anything.[Edited on July 9, 2008 at 12:09 AM. ^"Factors that provoke them include stress, fatigue, illness, injury from accidental biting, hormonal changes, menstruation, sudden weight loss, food allergies, the foaming agent in toothpaste (SLS), and deficiencies in vitamin B12, iron, and folic acid."i had one a few weeks ago...just avoid touching it (even with your tongue) and try not to get food in/on/around/about them. mine went away in about a week and all i did was gargle twice a day with salt water.[Edited on July 9, 2008 at 8:38 AM. I got mine from the dumbass dentist's assistant trying to numb me to fill a cavity sticking me with the damn needle FOUR TIMES before I finally got not even fully numb, but numb enough that I stopped bitching when they were drilling.
7/9/2008 9:55:14 AM

Woke up with one this morning, put Alum on it and I can feel it getting better and starting to go away...Alum FTW
7/9/2008 9:44:31 PM
i have one now i know nurses would sometimes use milk of magnesia and dab it on the sore.ive had them quite a bit so i just let it play through now, i figure theres not that much to do
7/9/2008 10:08:25 PM
so that alum powder didn't exactly work for me. i don't see how i could be doing it wrong. i put some on my finger and put it into the sore. it burned like hell but didn't dry up the thing. the next day i noticed some improvement, but it's been since wednesday and it's still not gone.
7/11/2008 10:00:42 AM
^^ Yeah, I think that's the stuff I get from the Dollar tree. It doesn't have Sodium Laurl Sulfate, and after using it for a good while now my canker sores really have gone way way down. I can't remember the last time I had one and I used to get them so bad. They are so miserable. I would defintely recommend changing toothpaste.
7/11/2008 10:13:47 AM
^^ If you have one forming it works really fast but if you've had one it may take a couple days. It should stop hurting as much and go away soon (faster than if you didn't do anything at all to it).[Edited on July 11, 2008 at 10:15 AM. Reason : ]
7/11/2008 10:15:25 AM
it did stop hurting as much. it's been bleeding when i brush my teeth and rinse; it wasn't really doing that before. i guess i won't really know for sure the effects of the alum this time around because i've had these for going on 2 weeks. i've tried so many things during that time that i can't really attribute the healing to one thing in particular.
7/11/2008 10:24:57 AM
I realized yesterday that the SLS-free toothpaste I have used in the past that I thought was Sensodyne was really Biotene. But it also tastes bad. Here's a big list of them: http://www.dentist.net/sls-free-toothpaste.asp
7/11/2008 10:27:11 AM
someone help this poor boy.hes in pain
7/11/2008 11:39:10 AM
Any time I get something like that in my mouth, I swish Colgate Peroxyl in my mouth every couple of hours. It seems to get rid of them pretty quick, at least for me. You can get it at any drugstore.http://www.colgate.com/app/Colgate/US/OC/Products/OverTheCounter/ColgatePeroxyl.cvspOr you could just gargle with hydrogen peroxide.
7/11/2008 12:19:55 PM
Someone mentioned benadryl earlier.. if you mix it and liquid maalox or something similar and put it on there it works pretty well. good temporary relief and i think it helps clear them up too. just mix a little and put it on there with a q-tip.
7/11/2008 2:55:45 PM
gargle with salt water.
7/11/2008 3:02:13 PM
ah, just kick him in the nuts and he won't be worrying about his mouth.
7/11/2008 4:23:49 PM
now that's not very nice
7/11/2008 10:17:27 PM
ummm ambasol on it an quit fucking with it
7/11/2008 10:43:25 PM
i quit fucking with it a couple days ago; wednesday i think, after i put alum on it.it's not nearly as painful and it's about half the size. should be gone tomorrow or sunday
7/11/2008 10:52:53 PM
i'm glad!
7/11/2008 11:33:17 PM
yaaaaaaaaaaaaaay. don't feel the one. still there though, should be gone tomorrow.
7/12/2008 7:51:47 PM
I get canker sores from time to time. They fucking suck.I just let them run their course. I've never tried any fancy schmancy stuff to kill them.
7/12/2008 8:08:33 PM
i think i'd recommend the alum. relieved the pain for sure.
7/12/2008 8:12:36 PM
+1 to the salt. But be a man and don't mix it with water. Just put the salt right on the canker sore. It hurts like hell for like 5 mins, but it takes the sting completely away.
7/12/2008 8:28:02 PM
I usually gargle with listerine until it stops burning, right before sleeping. Do this for 2 days or so, and it will go away.[Edited on July 12, 2008 at 8:41 PM. Reason : ]
