We do it all the time yearly, because the earth's orbit is elliptical, not circular. The perihelion (closest) occurs in early January and the aphelion(furthest) occurs in July.This cycle further fluctuates because the other planets, namely Jupiter and Saturn, tug on the Earth's orbit. This cycle has many factors, but is roughly 100,000 years.
